Rome 2 : Total War

I'm simply pointing out that a community which votes company of heroes 1 & 2 that differently are obviously pretty stupid when the core game mechanics are pretty much identical - they let the hype & disappointment override sense & reason then give stupid 0 votes for a game which isn't that bad.

The same applies here, Rome 2 has plenty of flaws but it isn't significantly worse than the other total war games as the core of the game is still almost identical.

The community can't say all the rest of the total war games are 10/10 but Rome 2 is 0/10 when 90% of the game is the same just with a few stupid choices & bugs which knock it down, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying it deserves scores to match the previous total war games - but the kind of silly scores it's getting give a false impression to perspective buyers (who deserve honest & reasonable reviews to read)

If they do insist on this kind of public outcry emotional wreck style voting then it simply means people will just ignore public voting scores (as I have for some time for this very reason).

It's pretty easy to spot which user reviews to ignore and which to take seriously though. Same with 'official reviews' really.

I've conquered all of northern Europe with the Iceni, they are pretty easy to play with. Just build up a couple of armies with decent stack size at the start and then go to war. I conquered Wales first, then Scotland, Ireland and Devon. I took the Welsh city with just the default army you get when you start iirc. Just fight the battles on the battle field instead of auto-resolving. At the start I used mercenaries really early on to boost recruitment, but remember to get rid of them afterwards they are horribly expensive.

As to buildings, you need to go with Artisans 1st to unlock the higher tier military stuff. bronze workshops and blacksmiths will unlock better infantry and siege weapons respectively. For cavalry you need to build a tier 1 farm and then a horse farm at the next tier. Right-click on them to see what they do.

Cool thanks. Yes I'd been attacking just with my 1 starting army and losing as they'd outnumber me 2:1 with v similar troops. Thought I'd built a bronze workshop and nothing had changed but I'll check tonight when I get in.

For anyone that has played the past series and enjoyed it will still buy this game regardless of it's 0/10 reviews. Myself I never read reviews on games, I buy what I think seems good and review it for myself. You can't trust anyone elses review unless it's from a known source.

Whats this thing with contested seas? Im trying to send my army across the sea but won't allow me to move my ships.

I am not sure what is happening there as I too have found that issue. It seems to be when two overlapping areas of "a contested sea" prevent any further exploration, at least that it was happens for me. Not sure why I simply could not just pass through it though....?

Its annoying as i have a full stack army on the ship.

To be fair, user reviews are just as rubbish as the critic reviews.

The average idiot on the street is unable to distinguish between a disappointing game & a game which is bad.

Company of heroes 2 while it was disappointing, was nowhere near that bad - as it's the gameplay mechanics are almost identical to the first game (Which I've played extensively & competitively).

The same applies to Rome 2, it's not that bad - just people are being hysterical over a few things which will most likely be fixed in a few weeks.

If a few bugs/gameplay fixes could make this game a 10/10 in the eyes of most, then it's not a 3/10 now - it's 6 or 7/10 with room for improvement once fixed.

I've got poor performance (considering my setup), slow turn speed (more so in multiplayer) - but apart from that along with a few gameplay mechanic issues it's not bad.

It's nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be.

Oh yes it is

Lets see

No SLI support

FPS capped @66fps

GPU usage is absolute rubbish

Why does it need 3.4gb of vram @1600p

And even the game Devs when referring to game patches use the phrase "Rome was not built in a day".

Having said all that the game runs ok on my setup @1600p maxed, I just think it should run a lot better.

similar situation, except that I am trying to explore and develop trade etc.

I did find this...

The good gentelmen of the campaign team have some more info on sea regions:

  • Depending on the ownership of adjoining port settlements, sea regions may be controlled, shared or contested.
  • If a faction owns all port settlements adjoining a sea region, they CONTROL it.
    • Penalties to maritime commerce from ‘Piracy’ are low.
    • Replenishment rate is increased both at sea and at port.
    • Naval recruitment costs are decreased.
  • If a faction and its allies or neutrals each own a port settlement adjoining a sea region, they are SHARING it.
    • Penalties to maritime commerce from ‘Piracy’ are moderate.
    • Replenishment rate is increased a little in port, not at all at sea.
    • No change to naval recruitment costs.
  • If a faction and at least one enemy own a port settlement adjoining the same sea region, it becomes CONTESTED.
    • Penalties to maritime commerce from ‘Piracy’ are high.
    • Replenishment rate is not buffed in port, and is stopped altogether at sea.
    • Naval recruitment costs are increased.
  • If a faction owns no ports adjoining a sea region, it is either NEUTRAL or HOSTILE.
    • In either case, no recruitment or replenishment can take place.
    • Maritime commerce penalties are irrelevant to such a faction, but they may raid locally in order to further increase the penalties for the owning factions.

....but I could not find why my ship can't get through the "contested" waters.

Im not sure what the deal is these days.
Are gamers expectations much higher than what they were in previous years?
Rome Total War was a great game, but then I guess there wasnt a great amount of competition at the time?

Has such a classic game been ruined by its sequel?

(Disclaimer: I've not played the game yet as I feared there maybe such "bug/issues" with the game on release).

No, Creative Assembly just decided to add loads of half baked ideas and take loads out.

Seriously, all they needed to do was re-skin Shogun 2, add some of the fairly good ideas (army traditions, combined naval and land battles), KEEP ALL THE GOOD FEATURES IN THE GAME, and they would have had a hit.

Someone up high seems to have gone full retard on the assumption that the game needed loads of new ill thought out and badly implemented ideas.

An idea isnt a good idea just because it is a new idea...

I call "dodgy" copy :D

Ha, no. If you look earlier in the thread i even posted a picture of the boxed copy i ordered when i received it after thinking it wasnt going to get here on release day!

I am still yet to see anyone show me their wonderful hi res icon that they supposedly have?

They are probably too busy trying to frantically photoshop one now they have realised that their icon is the same :p
