Rome 2 : Total War

Rome 2 is starting to run much smoother with patch 4, but I still get occasional crashes especially when attacking a settlement with large stacks. (3570k 4.6Ghz, 7950). I think there is a lot CA needs to do to make this a great game. I'm still enjoying the experience, but its only a fraction of what I was expecting in terms of Game play, AI, Difficulty, replayability and graphics (No MSA).

There are no
family feature
poor political or diplomatic system
seige attacks fundermentally broken

I've amassed 145hrs........So its not a terrible game by anymeans........

you run a similar system as myself - Ive been running vanilla since patch beta2 (mainly to test) ...

graphics issues arnt too bad - there were and still are some issues but IMO could easily be fixed.

Ive got about 300 hours in so far ... agree with you about the AI ... Id really like this game to be a challenge; for some reason I find it almost no challenge at all. Been playing on very hard; but may go for legendary; might want to find a way to save thou; have the occasional lock up or crash while testing these patches.

I like the unit varieties but some factions have too good units and think there are biases by the developers (ie jack lusted is the main unit guy and from what I can tell he likes macedon the best; and IMO macedon has the best unit options ...)

... cont ...

was going to say there are some improvements - so not all for naught ...

- enemy agents are a pain in the butt now
- they made it more difficult to get the armor upgrades (before it was easy at least for the greek states)
- so far with patch 4 I have been able to land my navy and use them on land; before it was always a crap shoot if they would actual not bug out.
- battle ai is slightly better
- appear to be less starving factions

obviously still bugs
- ai battle siege messed up
- ai campaign and battle still need help

but still improved -

My major grip at the moment is when i have an army in a settlement and i get blockaded by a fleet, when i get engaged in a fight my army builds transport ships and goes on the offensive instead of being able to defend the city with the troops inside.

am i missing something?

Is that with them assaulting or with you trying to fight them off?

If you're trying to fight them off then it makes sense as you're going out to engage them.

However if it's them assaulting rather than waiting you out then indeed it would be strange that you can't remain within your city to defend...

In the two campaigns that i've not played as Rome, Rome always gets destroyed.. I know it rewrites history and that's cool but it seems Rome has a really hard time as an AI faction... Has anyone else noticed this? Or has Rome become a powerful faction in anyones games?

They always seem to get taken over by other factions in my campaigns... with just about everyone at war with them really early.

I really wanted to take part of Europe as the Iceni then hit a brick wall when I encountered Rome :p I've never had a battle against Rome :(

First person ive ever heard saying they need a story mode for a Total War game.

It would be a very valuable side addition to the normal campaign.

I mean the TW series seems like Civ with huge combat.

Its great to play Rome and practically invading every country, but when there is no purpose, what's the point?

I think you're missing the point of the franchise a bit :)

As you said it's civ with massive battles. Has anyone ever said that civ needed a storyline?

The goal is to conquer the known world or whatever else you want them to be really. If you just want to play Iceni and take over northern Europe or even just the British Isles then try to repel the Romans when they arrive (if they arrive) then so be it. Set yourself some goals and go for it. Most people obviously want to take over the world as that's what the grand campaign goals are.

I'm deep into the campaign with so much money I would struggle to spend it all. As much of a pain this game is im still playing it.. I even pulled an all nighter last Friday night until 8am which I’m not proud of.

I've had a civil war which I crushed with the help of my allies. The bigger the empire becomes the more time consuming the game becomes. I feel for my legions and do everything I can to keep them alive.

My main game is as Rome, so I can't speak specifically about Rome, but the other playable factions do not fare well in my game. At the moment, only Egypt exists as a power - and the only major faction that I destroyed was the Iceni - all the rest have been done over by other "minor" factions. The strongest are some savages in Northern Europe (I've only cleared Gaul and Belgica) and the Eravisci - who are next on my list.

I'm looking forward to starting again as a barbarian faction - it seems to me that Rome, when played even slightly competently are immensely powerful - my armies have only lost when I was heavily outnumbered and at less than full strength. I'm not sure I'll try the Iceni, though - they were my first stop and they felt.... light.

My biggest bugbear is naval battles - I've never liked them since they appeared in Empire - and it's no better here. I find them terribly frustrating - but that's more about me than the game.

I'm pleased this thread has moved away from the incessant moaning - I have kept visiting in what was previously vain hope.

I'm not trying to belittle the game in anyway, I think its fantastic.

Just maybe its my own personal problem, but I'm struggling to want to play it.

I've played Rome, conquered up to the British isles and down towards Sparta. I'm making 15 - 18k a turn and have maxed out armies. There is pretty much nothing left to do, there is no army to stand against me nothing I can't afford All buildings are level 3 (As level 4 buildings are not worth it).

I'm not into multi player, so what are my options now?

I've started playing as the Iceni, and am struggling with the building upgrades.

Anyone got any tips?

Trade trade trade. Try and engage in as much trade as possible.

The income is spikey, but its consistent.

Iceni really struggle at the start, you need to invade Europe to really start to get the ability to trade. Concentrate on the ports first.

I find it just gets boring. You can do what you please once you have a good foothold in Europe (playing as Iceni but felt same as Rome).. Suddenly you're the most powerful faction.. there appears to be no threat, no one is really waging war on you unless you provoke them and then they aren't powerful and usually only have a couple of regions.

I was hoping to suddenly come across another faction who was as strong as me and then have some sort of challenge, but it seems the challenge just drops off!

I mean, I could wage war on everyone but that's not how I want to play most of the time.. Everyone is sucking up to me, asking for non aggression pacts.. being their own little factions in like two regions..

In my first Iceni campaign I actually got so fed up I went to Roma and liberated Rome just to get the Rome faction back, hoping they'd build up and then I could have some sort of challenge and get what I wanted.. Iceni vs Rome :p I suppose I crave this due to history but aren't Rome meant to be powerful? they get wiped out so easily in my games, as I said earlier :p.

No faction seems to be aggressive, they're all just doing thier own thing, Europe is in peace and it's weird :p

Pretty much going the same for me as above in my Iceni game. Now that I've landed in Europe and captured Belgica and Germania Minor (I think). I seem to be in a strong position. I'm using 2 full armies and they are cleaning up mostly. Everyone in the area is clamouring for NAPs.

Also, is there anything to really do if you are not constantly at war? Unless I'm missing something constant warring seems the only fun option. As sitting waiting for turns to process over and over takes ages and loses appeal fast.

I spend most of my game either warmongering, or preparing to kick someone around the map. I'm pretty sure I'd find it harder to warmonger if I turned the difficulty up, which is my next step - even if it's just artificial penalities to public order.

I really don't understand how Rome isn't a powerhouse for the AI, though - it's so easy and quick to get some amazing troops - unless all it builds is Velites :D
