Rome 2 : Total War

now no one wants to bother because the game isn't very good and most have stopped playing

Fixed
:p

Seriously though, you have only got to look at the thread in this sub section about which game you have been most disappointed about. Rome 2 is on most peoples list!

I apologise if I am making this thread tiresome for you but it is only because I am passionate about the Total War series and this game has been a huge disappointment for me. I guess I keep checking back on the forums in the hope things will have been miraculously fixed but I suppose that isn't going to happen.

Sorry, you are obviously the biggest fan becuse you care about FPS rates so much.

Thanks for reminding me the game isn't good, you must have a different version as I'm enjoying playing even though its unfinished.

Thanks to everyone else who discussed valid points whether they good or bad, funny feeling I might follow everyone else and leave this thread to be discussed by the most 'passionate' fans as there is no new input or valid points anymore.

Performance is the least of my worries with Rome II, but even when it comes to that, I have to note that the recent beta patch 3 is a downgrade (there is some bug with Extreme Shadows, which you can easily test by running the Extreme preset and then with Shadows on Ultra or Very High)), even though it fixes some particle effects that affected the end part of the benchmark.

With Radious Graphics Mod (that removes some unnecessary effects) and lowering Shadows and Particles to Very High, I get acceptable framerates in battles.

Sad to say, going from Catalyst 13.10 Beta 1 to Beta 2 has resulted in even poorer performance. So far, Catalyst 13.10 Beta 1 and Patch 2 were the best I got the game to run.

Either way, performance is not really something I'm concerned about at the moment. There are some fundamental issues with the game which, if not fixed soon, I have no hope of ever seeing ironed out.

After the second patch I'm able to play the game on my aging pc just fine, mainly all low settings but I'm not about graphics, its all about the game play!

Q8200, 4GB 800mhz ocz ram, 780I and palit gtx465 and 1920x1080

On the benchmark I get a steady 40-60 fps, I only lag when on the campaign map but that's negligible

Only issue I have is when enemy troops retreat, its hard to run them down with cavalry unlike he old Rome where they attacked the biggest group and hit everything in there path, on this they kind of just lol around and killing them every now and then -.-

Regularly saw my fps on the campaign map hit single digit numbers while playing last night. Made me sad. Only getting around 30% GPU usage. CPU bottleneck or bad game...?

Note I play on mostly med-high (there's very high and extreme still above most of my choices) settings at 1920*1080.

Oh god another one of my ilk! Don't complain about the games performance, you might upset some sensitive souls in this thread.

:p

Haha I shall complain if it makes me feel better. It's sporadic fps drops, like when I scroll across the map it grinds to a halt. I'm still happy to play the game though as I am getting quite into it :)

Are you guys using the Radious Graphics Mod?

It considerably improves framerates on the campaign map.

Oh thanks, I'll take a look at that later when I'm home.

They're not sensitive, they're just tired of your incessant, repetitive whining. The thread has been completely killed as a discussion topic for the game. It's just FPS this, FPS that.

I've played every Total War up until and including Empire, and loved them. Still think I'm gonna take the plunge and grab this when the price drops as Rome I was my fave.

In terms of campaign map functionality and the strategic element, how does it compare? I auto resolve all battles so have no interest in the capture the flag like issues etc. :)

One mechanic I'm not a fan of is that you can't move into an area near to an enemy's army unless you have enough movement to directly attack that army... I think it's silly.

Whether it's a wise move or not depends on the circumstances, but if I want to move my army right up against an enemy army, as long as I have the movement even if it's not enough to engage that army, I should be able to! It's ridiculous to have to stop (relatively) miles away so they can just pass by my army on their move. Ugh.

I think its more to stop the AI from bypassing your army, they are forced to fight it rather than stroll right next to it. It also allows ambush to work better.

I normally do this for Total War games. However this iteration is the first time i've genuinely enjoyed fighting the battles in person instead of autoresolving.

That said, the AI niggles posted in this thread by others (regarding many battle mechanics) are valid.

To be honest, despite the excitement prior to getting this game.... I'm finding that it's fundamentally so 'broken' that I'm having no fun whatsoever with it, I don't really like any of the aspects about it that I'm shelving it for now, and hoping to find some serious modifications to it in a year or 2 to make it enjoyable.

Probably won't pre-order a game ever again, following this. :(

Since updating to the recent beta I can't launch the game. I get the first screen then a "Rome total war II has stopped working" Removed my saved games, still got problem!

Edit: Okay removing the few Radious mods I had installed fixed it.. should have known!

Patch 4 has certainly sped things up and fixed a number of annoyances. Going to complete my current campaign, then might play some Empire while I wait for the new X game.

Playing patch 4 beta here ...

Still not a challenge at least so far - will keep playing. I agree with krugga; performance is the least of my worries - I want to play a game where I have a risk of losing.

I think Ive played 20 campaigns so far (till I get bored) and Ive never lost or come close to losing yet. Very hard diff.
