Rome 2 : Total War

I went back to Rome 2 Total War a few weeks back. Ive gotta say its its probably one of the games i felt so ripped off by when it first came out. I remember it being in a pretty poor state.

I still play quite abit of Napoleon Total War. Really liked it and still do. My main question with Rome 2 is why the hell are the graphics so poor. My rigs decent enough to play it maxed out but it honestly still looks awful. Worse than Napoleon especially in battles. Everytime i get a battle i get the setting as the most baron terrible looking green grass scene. How did they manage to get these graphics so poor?

Is there something ive been missed graohics wise lol? Have i just seen on YouTube there bringing out DLC for it now? What's the point in that all these years later?

They brought DLC last year also. They are just milking the IP.

Also completely agree with you. The textures are pretty poor, compared to TWW2 for example. And I would rather play Napoleon than Rome 2 again.
CA needs to up the engine in general, and put some better textures on Rome 2. Also get rid of the single thread hogging and write proper code.

I mean they are damn lazy, and is a big company. TWW1 performance was down to the game was running mostly on the last thread. (90%+ usage constantly)
They fixed that by moving the execution to the last true "core" with TWW2. Which is just three lines of code when you write multicore applications targeting cores/threads.
Same issue with TWW1 is affecting Rome 2 and Attila also. (that is why fast i5s have better perf on those games).
And still stuck on single thread with couple more threads doing a 20-25% work.

Smaller companies are moving to Vulcan their products to resolve issues like CPU hogging and allow for better graphics even if their game engine support 32 core CPU.
Good example Egosoft. X4 going to be on Vulcan, yet still support 32 core CPUs. (X Rebirth does support 32 core cpu since it came out).

How does Atilla fair graphics wise? I heard that was better? From what ive seen of Total War Britainia they look pretty good and heard they were another step up from Atilla. Ive completely been put off buying any Total War game after the shambles that was Rome 2.

I'll probably give Britainia a go when i see it at a decent enough price.

The engine had a lot of changes with the TW Warhammer 1 & 2 the Britannia is based, but isn't as big as game like the other TW.
I didn't even bother to buy it. We shall see if the Three Kingdoms is any better, because I like Chinese (and Japanese) setup.

If you buy one is Total War Warhammer 2. Really good game, with very beautiful battles and pretty cool armies. Especially if you play Lizardmen or Skaven.

I've not played a total war game for a couple of years now but I'm getting an urge to have another go, having had a look around the Divide Et Impera mod for Rome 2 looks quite interesting so I might try that, does anyone have any recommendations on any compatible mods to run with it in order to get the best possible experience?

It's still utter ***** even with Divide et Impera. Don't waste your time. If you haven't tried the Warhammer games then I suggest you do so, they're very good. Rome 2 is a turd. Look out for Medieval 1212 overhaul for Total War Atilla it's months away but looks very promising.

Thanks for replying.

Everything I've read suggests that the warhammer games are far superior but the whole fantasy side of things doesn't appeal to me at all, flying horse units, magic and whatever those weird wheel things are I see moving around the battlefield just puts me off from buying them.

I already own Rome 2 and Attila and that Medieval 1212 overhall looks great, so I'll definitely keep my eye on that one.

Also Ancient Empires for Attilla, which converts it to a R2 time period game.

The issue is Attilla's engine allows for greater variation and looks much better than R2's but it is fundimentally knackered and needs major revisiting by CA (ToB is basically Attilla's engine fixed, and its great)

Great, I'll have a look at that one too.

ToB looks decent but the map looks a little small, I might check it out next time there are sales on though :-)

Yeah, its def smaller which is why it has the saga definition. Fantastic theme though and its basically the attilla engine fixed of its performance issues, similar mood/atmosphere and some reincorporated RPG elements from older games. Can't believe they are trying to sell it at 30 quid tho. 15/20 or so would be just right.

Bit of a thread necro! :o

Had this on my steam for years, and have always wanted to sink my teeth into a Total War game but just never got round to it!

Installed, failed the prologue miserably as found I was either getting attacking from all sides while not having enough funds to recruit new forces, so thought i'd try a proper campaign and now the same is happnening.

Public order is through the floor, forces a dwindling and i'm only on turn 5.

What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have a good beginners guide or any tips or how to get started with it?

Install DEI overhaul mod if you love history and slower paced battles.
