Rome 2 : Total War

Just got back from Rezzed and saw the pre-alpha footage and it looks like you will need a beast of a machine to run it maxed out. It will be an epic game and its something I would wait to do an upgrade for.

A little worried that they will promise more then what they can handle and have a repeat of empire. Lets hope not :)

Interesting, well hopefully ivy + 680 will do, otherwise can always upgrade end of next year. (so long away :( )

Confirmed facts: (put into OP if you like)

- new engine
- sea battle and land battles are no longer distinguised (as in, you can land troops mid battle, or fire arrows at the enemy land army from your ships, that kind of thing)
- scheduled for 2013 release
- facial and skeletal animation system (ie much better cutscenes)
- bigger, more detailed, more unique cities
- new camera option during battles, you can pull back to a birds eye view of a 1km square area, to observe the overall engagement and issue orders
- armies will be fewer in number (in the campaign map), but more significant and contain more troops. fewer small skirmishes between reinforcing units
- player choice on terms of equipment given to troops (probably via a tech tree)
- much broader political scope. eg you can turn rome back into a kingdom rather than an empire, or remain as a republic
- more "human" than previous games. devs want to get away from feeling of controlling a large number of human shaped ants, and make you feel more like you are commanding an actual battle.

Some things I would like to see in the game:

- good AI and pathfinding from the start, not patched in a year later
- better fighting/duelling animations in battles (this has improved in every successive game so likely will again)
- more emphasis on ambushing the enemy rather than just engaging in head to head pitched battles all the time
- good naval battles. what with fire arrows, greek fire, ramming etc they should be ridiculously good fun if they do it right
- return of city view

This in addition to all the tweaks and improvements which have joined the franchise since rome 1, as well as all the stuff they've promised (listed in my post above).

R2TW has officially overtaken SimCity 5 and Generals 2 as my most anticipated game :D

Reading this thread has resulted in me downloading Rome Total War again.

Any advice on the mods? It would seem to be either Rome Total Realism or Europa Barbarorum...

I dislike mods that turn the game into one seige after the next, some of the lets play videos I have seen make it look like loads more settlements have been added, is this fair to say?

Any other mods out there that are worth a look? I really enjoy the vanilla game, I guess the pyjama wearing barbarians and the squalor problems when the cities get too big are the main niggles that I can remember.

I am reading through the mods page on twcenter, I would be very grateful of any help / advice.

Thanks! :)

EDIT - Oh on another note, if anyone fancies a multiplayer co-op campaign of Shogun 2 at some point (including rise or fall of the samurai, I have those) I would be very interested!

Total Realism 100% :)

SPQR has been one of the preferred mods for me with RTW. It has been well developed and certainly can be a challenge. It also seems to be bug free. I find nothing more annoying than testing out a "full mod" to find that there are campaign stopping bugs when you are part way through a game.

The SPQR mod also has the option to use a very large map with lots of settlements.

They look amazing, I really hope they take their time. This is not one to be rushed especially if they are trying to add a lot.

I have a sad feeling that the first will be a bit like empire but the expansions will build it like they did for napolean. At least going back to swords makes the ai a bit easier

The pessimistic opinion is to keep myself grounded and ready for it :)

Could try Darthmod, it improves a lot of the battle AI and adds some nice extra units, re-jigs regional start positions to be more realistic and makes the Romans a little less 'juggernauty' early game.
