The Creative Assembly officially announces Total War: Rome II, following the hint last week that such a revelation was coming. The strategy sequel is expected next year, and in a coordinated unveiling, there are various previews to accompany the news. There are first looks on IGN (where they also have a live trailer), Computer and Video Games, Rock, Paper, Shotgun, and Shacknews. There are also video interviews on PC Gamer. Here are a pair of screenshots, and here's the announcement:
SEGA(R) of America, Inc. and SEGA(R) Europe, Ltd. today announced that The Creative Assembly, creator of the multi award-winning Total War(TM) series of PC strategy games, is currently developing Total War: Rome II(TM) for PC.

Encompassing one of the best-known periods in world history, Total War: Rome II will combine the most expansive turn-based campaign and the largest, most cinematic real-time battles yet seen in any game.

Total War: Rome II will sink players into the dangerous political machinations of Rome's senate, while asking them to struggle with family dilemmas and question the loyalty of 'friends' and allies. Leading the greatest army ever seen into battle will be just one challenge players will face at the head of the world's first superpower.

You've given me the urge to watch Romany stuff now with that. :(

*rumbles through DVD's for Gladiator, TROY, 300, ROME & Spartacus*

:D

it's more like Age of Empires type game in Roman era, except you can switch to first person and take control of your character and be amongst the battle, I remember it being pretty good haven't played it in a while.

So its a lot like Kingdom Under Fire? I'm so new to all of this, I've only just managed to distinguish between Total War & Civilization! :p

I've heard of AoE but I can't place what its like, I gotta forget everything else and delve straight into the RTS/TBS genre's, more fun than anything IMO.

This is about how I'm feeling right now!! :D :D :D

BRING ON RTW II! Oh yes!

This had better be amazing.... even if not, it'll get modded to be amazing... I've played more hours on RTW than any other game, ever.

My poor, poor PC hardware will need significant expenditure...

You missed out on 2 fantastic games, they got a lot better after Empire. This gives me hope for Rome 2.

Nah, Shogun 2 was alright, but still poor gameplay, gunpowder and so many imbalances ruined it for me. I also did not purchase Napoleon after the shambles that was Empire and from what know of it it seemed just as bad.

Eome 2 will be the last TW game I ever buy if it doesn't come close to the games prior to and including Med2.

Rome was my favourite game by far but I'm not confident they can replecate it whatsoever and seem hell bent on MMO/RPG'ing a very good RTS into the ground. The Avatar mode for MP is dire in Shogun 2 and seeing as MP is what I mainly play they better not do that again.

Shogun 2 is actually really balanced, maybe not against the A.I. who have gunpowder, but against players it is. Myself and two friends do 3v3's, and before I got Fall of the Samurai it was 2 Shogun 2 armies and 1 Fall of the Samurai army vs 3 Fall of the Samurai armies time after time, and we won them all, a lot of them were open battles too, which are much harder to beat line infantry on.

Shogun 2 armies take more time to get good than Fall of the Samurai, but its a pretty equal playing field end game, and somebody can have all the line infantry they want, they have to know how to use them or it actually makes it easier to beat them, somebody who uses them poorly is easier to beat than somebody using pure melee units by miles. Dachi-Samurai hit & run's ftw. :)

Of course, if you charge your melee units blindly into line infantry, you will get destroyed, they are just spear units vs horsemen but to melee, except a fully upgraded squad of United States Marines, those guys beat most katana units in melee. :O

Then again, a fully ranked up Katana Hero is unkillable, something that isn't available to Fall of the Samurai armies.

Actually started a new Julii Campaign today, fantastic news. I love RTW. I bought M2TW thinking it would be even better but I was actually disappointed with the gameplay, I've never got past the first battle (rebel village) as the English (through boredom)

Everything felt a lot slower then RTW for me and the starting units seems pathetic. I didn't even dare sending my general on Horseback against some basic light infantry because they would start dropping quite rapidly even when I hammer and Anvil'd them all the time.

Looking forward to it :)

Im a big fan of the Total War series loved them all apart from empire/napoloen. I just love the epic battles with thousands of troops at your command. The mods are also better than the vanilla games and what really does make the series worth playing.

Mods i recommend:

Medieval 2 Total War Kingdoms: Try stainless steel for how the game should have been, and third age if your a Lord Of The Rings Fan
Shogun 2 Total War/Fall Of The Samurai: Darthmod, makes the game how it should have been and also the battles are amazing its just epic.
