Rooney retires from international football

I'm sure Prince Harry Kane, who didn't score a single goal in the last tournament, will pick up the baton and continue our proud heritage of doing naff all at International tournaments.

He wasn't world class but he was a hell of a lot more effective than his team mates.

A golden generation wasted by weak management.

We never had a golden generation that statement ***** me off no end, we won nothing with this so called golden generation, if we won somthing then it would have been a golden generation, can only say Spain had the golden generation they won titles on the bounce

It was a generation of great talent that never worked together and all had same issue couldn't cross that line one the big stage.

In regards to rooney as much as I don't like him he can only score past what's put in front of him weather that's weak teams or not.

It's long over due imo and he should have retired long ago. Besides sturridge/kane we don't have many other players who have been given any chances.

Sturridge is a sick note as it is, Kane did naff all himself when given the chance too

We had a generation of talent that dazzled the club competitive environment. It should have translated into national achievement but weak managemen meant that the group of talented individuals never formed a team unit.

the only reason they "dazzled" at club level is because most of them were surrounded by 6+ foreign world class players. When they got together in the England squad none of them had a clue as evidenced by the terrible lack lustre performances againts pretty much every team they from around 2000 onwards, notable examples include the defeats to Iceland, the 4-1 thrashing by Germany in the Euro's, the 1-0 defeat to NI in a qualifier.

It's not really the players fault, I blame the greed of the premier league and the pressure all the clubs put their managers under without giving them the time needed to actually bring talent through the team. Look at teams like City, Chelsea, Man U (post Fergie) they are just trying to buy wins rather than actually build a decent squad by bringing home grown talent through their academies. Then all England managers have made the same mistakes of just picking the household names from those clubs rather than take a chance on actually picking players that have really proved themselves from teams like say Bournmouth or Burnley purely through fear of media crucifixion.

This countries football is properly in the bin and will stay there untill the premier league stops choking the life out of it or the England managers and the FA grow some balls and tell the media to do one.

On the whole an incredible player, flawed but a great all the same. His career has fizzled out a bit of late, but this is the right decision for him and the national team.

Shame Southgate is useless anyway so it's not like it'll matter. :(

I strongly suspect the reason why he's announced his retirement is because Southgate wasn't going to pick him.

Southgate is just another FA lackey. If the FA tell him he needs to pick Rooney he'd be playing just like with geriatric Hodgson

You fail to mention the teams he scored most of those goals against.

Should have retired years ago.

People always say that, then look at who charlton got his goals against. Loads of goals against home nation sides that were drivel even compared to how bad they are now. Or 4 goals against the USA, they wouldn't have beaten a Sunday league side in the 50s.

You can only score against who you are put up against and Rooneys stats show he did.

The gap between international sides is far smaller now than the 60s.

Man Utds treble winning side also going to into the early 00 was mostly UK origin. People seem to forget we thrashed Germany 5-1 in 2001 and lost to eventual Champions Brazil in 2002 thanks to a Ronaldinho wonder goal.

Good decision from Rooney. Means that other players can now get a look in. Great player for his country wherever he was asked to play and record goal scorer.

I don't buy into the straw man that he wasn't world class because he didn't win anything at international level. It's amazing how blinkered some fans are when their own players pull on their club shirt they are world class.

Ashley Cole
Frank Lampard
Stevie Gerrard
Alan Shearer

All supposed world class players yet never really did it on the international stage.

It all depends on your definition of world class Loki. Cole was one of if not the best LB in the world for years, Lampard and Gerrard were 2 of the best midfielders in the world for prolonged periods. How many seasons did Rooney perform on the same level of the best forwards around? 1 or 2.

Rooney's had a very good career and broke a lot of records but mainly due to the length of his career rather than through how well he played.

I don't really follow footie that much but I never got why Rooney gets so much grief, his goal scoring record speaks for itself.

The problem is his career started out so young and so long ago people forget his good years and focus on the recent ones instead. When he burst onto the international scene in 2004 it was fantastic. I would say the only player that come close to that was Owen in 98 WC and no youngster since. Kane has been shocking for example.

Glad to see him gone. Never produced the goods at the top level for England, although he was not alone there.

Well over rated player.

Is it really retiring when you were unlikely to get another game? I honestly believe the only reason he's been kept in the England side as long as he has is because he was earmarked by the FA to break the records, the longer people talk about Bobby Charlton being record goal scorer the more you start to realise how **** modern English footballers are.

I only follow him because he still is a decent scorer in FPL every year. People here would have you thinking he was on a zimmer frame and hadn't scored in a couple of years.

Pffft Gerrard was rarely the best midfielder at Liverpool let alone in the world. The better ones moved on. Prolonged period as one of the best midfielders in the world, you are having a laugh. Jokes aside he was never the best in the premier league let alone in the running in the world. Lampard though I will give you.
