Because he thought he was the best person to replace Alonso.

He's hardly the same sort of player as Alonso though. As it stands he was an awful signing but there's still potential for him to come back (if Roy's sacked) and be a very good player.

i think hodgson is a good manager i'm just not sure if his style suits liverpool and also i think his buys have been poor meirelles and poulsen aren't great players he should have kept aquilani who is playing amazing for juventus and is inline to get a recall to the national team with his recent performances and also jovanovic isn't half the player babel is.

I actually think Meireles has been a great signing. If he can play for us 90% as well as he plays for his national side then we have a real gem on our hands. I actually think that he and Aquilani in midfield would probably work very well.

Definitely, Meireles looks like he has a lot of potential, showed last week. Great signing. I'd quite like to see Aqualini back in the starting 11, only started to pick up the pace of English football at the end of last season.

Yup, I think Meireles has been an excellent signing as well, he moves well, can pass, and can demolish a football with his right foot! I hope that we can afford to bring Aquilani back with the new owners present, although how he fits in alongside Cole, Gerrard, and Meireles I don't know.

Oh, and Babel is pants - Jovanovic is considerably better (doesn't make Jovanic a good player by the way, just means that he's better than Babel!)

What are we basing this great and excellent signing stuff on? What we hope he's going to produce or what he has produced?

So far he looks a decent, tidy footballer but hasn't really shown anything exceptional. Hopefully now that Roy's realised he's a CM and not a RM, he can kick on and justify spending close to £12m on him.

I'm basing it on the fact that he's played a handful of games in the PL and is already up wih the pace of it. He's a tidy, creative central midfielder who doesn't misplace too many passes, and I expect to pop up with a few goals. In short, he's what we needed. Hence an excellent signing.

He's not shown any creativity yet though. To call a £12m player an excellent signing you'd hope for more than just getting to terms with the league and being tidy.

It's still early and I hope he comes good but he's got a bit of work to do yet before he can be called an excellent signing.

edit: and everybody thought Keane and Kewell were exactly what we needed and look how they turned out.

As i said, if he can produce 90% of that which is does for his country, then we have a gem of a player.
Currently? not doing it.
But he obviously has the talent.

Roy Hodgson lifted clouds of uncertainty shrouding his position at Liverpool by insisting: “I don’t fear Kenny Dalglish will take my job.”

Instead, the under-*pressure Anfield boss *maintains he is content that he and the *Liverpool legend are *working side by side to *restore the club to its former glory.

Hodgson contends *Dalglish – who offered his services as manager in the summer – is no longer the man to take the reins, but still has crucial roles to play in their future.

In an extraordinary and candid interview, Hodgson revealed also that he brought Dalglish in from the cold after the Scot had been shunned by previous *manager Rafael Benitez.

Hodgson said: “If Kenny’s presence is a threat it is, but the fact is I’m not prepared to pass up on quality *people who can help us move forward because I’m personally frightened.

“If the day comes that they decide they want Kenny *Dalglish and not me then so be it.

“That wasn’t the case in the summer, but that’s not to say it won’t be forever more. But I have no fears in that respect.

“I know what I can bring to the job and what qualities I have. I’m not a political person, I’m not frightened of these things.

“I don’t know about his ambition, but you can *understand that I can’t ask him, ‘do you want my job?’

“I was disappointed – and I’ve told him this – that he *applied for the job in the *summer because I don’t think that was ever really going to happen for him.” But unlike his predecessor, Hodgson is untroubled by the spectre of Dalglish and keen to harness his stature to enhance the club’s cause.

He said: “When they wanted me for the job, I made it clear to Kenny that he would be with me – not like with Benitez, when he was here in name but not allowed to step foot in Melwood and it was ‘we don’t want anything to do with you’.

“I told Kenny, ‘that won’t be the case, I want to tap into you for all the things you can bring’, not least his iconic status. He’s doing a very good job, helping us with our scouting, he still does a lot with the younger players at the academy and he also plays an ambassadorial role.

“You could not find a better person in the world to do that job for Liverpool Football Club and he should be doing it for other managers when I leave.

“His job should be a *permanent one.”

Dalglish, who joined *Hodgson last week at Wigan to check on today’s hosts Bolton, is helping the search for at least one new striker to recruit in January.

Hodgson will be alerted by Manchester City’s announcement that Roque Santa Cruz is available, but has ruled out signing Kevin Davies for a second time because, at 33, the Bolton and England hitman is considered too old.

Admitting he wants up to six players to bolster his squad, Hodgson said: “We’re desperately short up front, but whether we can get the real big-hitter we’d like might be difficult. We might have to take a chance on something second best.”

Can we sack yet him? Please?

Don't want Santa Cruz , he is what.... 30 ? Hardly a player who is one for building on. There are lots of decent 20-25 year old players around who we could build upon for several years. Don't want to see us going out and buying a bunch of old timers and then having to rebuild the whole damned squad again in 2 years time.

Still certain that Hodgson isn't the man to take us forward but the last 2 games he's shown that he's starting to learn from his mistakes.

We're still too cautious and lack tempo with and without the ball but it's not as bad as it's been, and his team selection has been better. He still needs to think before he speaks though.

What, you mean beating Bolton away wasn't a famous win?!

I'm still not at all convinced by Hodgson. Yesterday could have quite easily been another goalless draw which would have left us in the relegation zone after 10 games and next we have Chelsea.

Too many long balls, too deep, shaky defending, no width, players out of position. He still looks like a manager who's playing not to lose rather than with confidence and a willingness to commit and win games.

I'm also far from convinced he's the man to bring in the players we need to improve the squad.

What ,you dont rate Hangerland, Murphy, Duff, Zamora? ;)
I think he might know the players he wants to bring in and they may well be very good players. However I'm not sure they'll come if Hodgson is in charge. It's clear a lot of players go to a club to work with a particular manager and Hodgson doesn’t have the experience at a high enough level to bring in those type of players.

Also J Henry has talked about bringing in young players that represent good value for money (similar to Arsenal) and with all due respect to Hodgson he is no Arsene Wenger. We all know what Hodgson can manage on a budget because like you say he's already tried it a Fulham.
