RTX 4070 12GB, is it Worth it?

Not sure how AMD are ‘worse’ than any other competitor. All of these companies exist for one reason, to make money for their shareholders. They aren’t out to do anyone a favour.

There are plenty of instances where every tech company has undertaken shady practices or made questionable choices.

At least AMD are there, and like I said before, they are much more open in terms of their technology and standards than their competitors - without them we would have Intel/Nvidia without any sensible competition. And that would be awful. Look what Intel did for generations when they had no real competition. You essentially got the same CPU with a handful of percentage point performance boost for years. And Nvidia have been pushing the pricing barrier for years since the days of Titan (and before).

We would all love AMD to provide a better or comparable product at a price that massively undercuts the competition, but they’ve arguably never been this competitive in terms of product portfolio for decades if not ever, looking at their desktop/mobile/server CPU and GPU lineup. So it’s only logical for them to price them accordingly.

But market share keeps eroding. They are like 9% or there abouts now. That is alarming.

I and many others would have jumped on a 7900 XT or XTX had it been priced what most think they should have been. They would still be making a profit I recon, maybe not as much overall, but would have improved their market share and mindshare which would help in the longer term.

Had Nvidia come in competitively you can bet they would have too. But instead they just like to tag along and undercut by $100 or so. So yeah, no loyalty from them, why should I be loyal?

The older I get, the faster it seems to go by. When one zoomes out and take a cosmic perspective, you stop caring about one company or the other so much and just go with what you feel like. No point being loyal when they ain't.

Happy to go back to AMD once they get their **** together though. But based on what I saw they did with FSR on Resident Evil 4 Remake recently I was not impressed. I have had to install a mod to get DLSS working as it is significantly better. How could they let the opportunity to showcase how good FSR is in such game?

They need to really improve FSR and make sure it is consistent in all titles it is in and be in a lot more new titles imo. DLSS is actually a bigger selling point for me since DLSS 2 than RT.

So yeah, unless they get more competitive with pricing it seems like their market share will continue to erode.

Here is my list of GPU's. Had loads of ATI/AMD cards. I don't speak as a fan boy of one side or the other. Like many here I dislike Nvidia more as a business than AMD. But how does the saying go? I won't cut of my nose to spite my face? :)

Presumably you'd want an RTX 3080 TI, as even a RTX 3080 with 12GB may not be quite enough...

It's a shame really, because the RTX 3080 TI isn't exactly a low power card, I'm not even sure if it would work well with my Seasonic Prime 650w PSU.

I don’t disagree at all mate, we are both old enough and have spent way too much on products from both companies haha. Like you my first GPU was a TNT, although it was a TNT2 Ultra! Those were good days. I don’t even want to think about what cards I’ve owned or what I’ve spent. I will probably throw up.

I still think the XT/XTX are good cards, solid competitors. They use a bit too much power competitively, but they are generous with vram and they offer solid rasterisation performance and decent RT. In UE5 titles they are going to be very strong. The pricing should be keener, but that seems to be the world we are living in now. At least AMD are highly competitive now, for some time it really felt like they had given up. I don’t remember being this competitive for a long time GPU wise.

Its an unoptimised mess though, I wouldn't put too much value on one or two games.

I really hate this.

"This game doesn't run well on stuck in 2017 Nvidia hardware, so its unoptimised"

Games would really like to move on from 2017, they want to look better, have high res textures, so i'll rephrase that.

"Nvidia's stingy profiteering hardware rescorces are making it difficult for game developers to move on from 2017"

It's a shame that AMD has decided to take a holiday from releasing new graphics cards... They've calculated that it pays to wait it seems.

Oof - This game is really heavy on graphics:

I think I may rethink getting an RTX 3080, maybe the 10GB would be a limiting factor. Would be interesting to compare it to the 12GB variant.

Not even at 4k and the 3090 is 22.5% faster. From where I'm standing you can see why the XTX or the 80 are not really a consideration.

I really hate this. <snip>

Its gets worse, when its only "one or two games" which is now at least ten as its been one game for like more than a year.

It's a problem for Nvidia - the RTX 4070 is apparently going to be around a 29 TFlop card. The RTX 3080 TI is a 34 TFlop card.

The RTX 4070 would need to be clocked at around 2900 Mhz to achieve about the same FP32 processing power.

AMD is just waiting for Nvidia to set the price so they know what to set to come in 50 quid cheaper if they are the same speed or if they are slightly faster then they'll come in at the same price.

I think if they don't release Navi32 cards in the next month, then it's probably because they aren't particularly competitive. Or, they'd rather prioritize production of laptop GPUs.

Maybe there will be some news about Navi32 (mobile variant) soon.

Yep. The AMD way. Let Nvidia set the price, come in a little cheaper. Job done. Don't worry about anything else

The way that chart is sorted matter then look like amateurs, why would any decent reviewer sort on average FPS and not min FPS?

10GB actually just about works though.

The 12GB 3060 being 4 times faster than three 8GB 3060 Ti is crazy.

It's the 8GB cards that are the most interesting, like the RTX 3070 and TI, with minimum framerates of 7 and 10 on Ultra.

It doesn't paint the whole picture though as the game is very playable on these cards on the high medium preset at 1440p.
