Russell Brand.

Greenwood didn't go to trial because his girlfriend withdrew the charges.
And then went on to have his kid. Weird case that one, I suspect their relationship had gone toxic as some do and they were embroiled in an escalating game of tit for tat. Maybe once this was pointed out, they realised they were being daft and tried to move on. We'll never know exactly, that is one case we shouldn't really be commenting on with how it finished.

Someone has to be sacrificed to sate the blood-thirsty masses in case some victims realise the only justice they're going to get is by getting it themselves.

I always remember a mob outside a house in the UK, throwing bricks at the windows. This was after a local paper mentioned that the owner was a paediatrician working for the local hospital. The public saw the "pedo" in that and decided she needed to be lynched.

It’s not “trial by media” proving his guilt; it’s investigative journalism followed by people responding to evidence presented. But then I wouldn’t expect much understanding of journalism in the depths of inceldom.

It's a shame there's not enough investigative journalism being used to expose corruption, mishandling of public funds, government contracts, actions of politicians, etc etc.

It doesn't exactly take Columbo to investigate a bloke who's promiscuous life was in the public eye for years.

Maybe I'm a pessimist but I question why and when they choose to target people.

None of these media corps were investigating him when his lifestyle was in full swing. He was getting them ratings. Now he's online only he's fair game.

What about Jimmy Saville, totally horrific guy who didn't come to light until he was dead. They happily sweep stuff under the rug until it suits them. Yet we are expected to trust their judgement on everything.

I think the Jimmy Saville case highlights the same weakness in the system. If the press didn't go to town and ruin careers, then there would be no grounds for taking someone to court for making "false" accusations. So the rich couldn't threaten the poor with retribution. It would remove the power that rich people have over poor victims. Maybe then they would come forward more often.

My point, though, is that the solution to this is not to allow the media to make up for shortcomings in the system.

the thing with Saville was the people who worked with him KNEW at least in part he was dodgy.
but he wasn't reported . Would he have been investigated and charged. if he had been reported? actually back then I am not so sure , as he was a powerful man and (I like to think) things were different then than they are now .

hopefully going forward such things would be properly investigated now (albeit likely only going to trial in 3 years time such is the backlog)

it is painfully obvious the bias and the agenda the media has now.
Look I am not saying the man is innocent. I am saying it should be a proper independent investigation done before he is splashed all over the media.

I do know 1 person who was accused of rape. as it turns out the man was a total backstabbing asshat ... but rapist he was not. the person who accused him had done it to a few other people as well and the police knew here. (the awkward thing is she was a friend as well). it was apparently a "cry for help" (attention seeking).

there are so many ways she could have done that other than accusing someone of that and we would all have helped her. she hadn't even slept with the guy.
but for the short period before it was cleared up were horrible for him and that wasn't even in the news just his circle of at the time friends.

tit for tat, where the tat is a bit of rape, beating her until she's bruised all over her body is fair does to you then? I mean there is very clear evidence of all of that. Probably a Man United supporter hoping he gets his player back.

Its always been this way though
Can you point to a time when you think it wasnt?
Probably pre social media maybe. As I said before given how society has changed over rhe past 20 odd years maybe some sort of disclaimer when 'investigations' are done of this nature saying the accusers at the time of publishing have refused to go to the police despite recommendations to do so.

Tabloid newspapers have been doing this since I can remember, and that means at least the 1980s. It’s how they sold copies.

Only difference now is that people can comment without being in the same room.

Because they get shut up or demonised. Look at things like vaccines and international trade deals, the B word and food quality etc... lots of nefarious stuff going on but they're swept under the carpet but a lot of it turns to conspiracy theories and apparently lunatics for even considering alternative things.

That said if the evidence is found then it has to be carefully handled so that it doesn't interfere with a fair trial. Even Jimmy Saville had he been caught out when alive I'd have wanted a fair trial rather than blood lust from a population whipped up into a frenzy by the press and hearsay.

Nope
Tabloids, and you had far more local papers that would pick up local stories of this sort of thing

Social media has sped it up, but its only done that (well and multiplied it due to local stories often going more viral)

You'll get branded a conspiracy nut now for saying that.

People have lost a desire to question anything.

Companies buy out threatening smaller businesses and dissolve them etc. It's not surprising to think powerful firms might control narratives for their interests.

"investigative journalists" need an operating budget. An editor will decide what they are allowed to investigate. They are sent out like attack dogs. Don't pretend they have any public interests in mind.

All hearsay, as I said nasty toxic relationships can be a two way street in the regard. My mates Mrs stabbed him in the back with a BBQ fork once when he was roided out and they were arguing like cat and dog when they were younger. They've realised they were being stupid and moved on.

You've perfectly illustrated how things have changed since the advent of social media though, now you can have a bunch of crazies living in Timbuktu make a random comment, which is in turn amplified by other crazies and before long you got a bunch of nutters amplified all looking for their dopamine hit.

The investigation in to those arrests found the officers had not conducted themselves in an incorrect manner. The decision to make payouts was nothing but media appeasement. The officers in question were thrown under the bus.
If they were so confident in that they should have taken the case to court rather than settling.

How’s that any different to how Brand made his living? Live by the sword…
