Russian SU-24 - Shot Down by Turkey

He will huff and puff for the domestic audience that's for sure but there is not a lot else tough guy will do in the real world apart from cut some links with Turkey.

Surely he'll have to warn Turkey that it will be an "act of war" or something if they shoot down another jet? Although he can't do much now, he'll be under big pressure to draw a line in the sand. Turkey made a strong play (justified or not) and so I'd imagine Putin will have to make an equally strong threat.

No he won't. The Russian media has barely touched the subject which means they want to sweep this incident under the carpet.

Turkey is one of the biggest supporters of terrorism in the World, in fact we only tolerate them due their proximity to the Middle-East trouble spots and they allow the use of Incirlik on the condition that a blind eye is turned to some of their nefarious dealings and actions.

British airspace extends beyond our sovereign territory, which is true of most nations with a coastline. So a Russian jet could enter our airspace without being shot down, just as we can enter theirs. It's when they enter our sovereign territory that they will be shot down, which is why they never do.

In this case, they entered Turkish sovereign territory, which is why they were shot down.

They also never enter British airspace. They enter airspace in which Britain has an economic interest, but are over international waters. aka, near British airspace.

We very nearly shot down a plane in British airspace that would not respond, so don't think we wouldn't shoot down a Russian fighter jet in British airspace!

Ummm no, they don't enter out airspace or they would be shot down. They are escorted away BEFORE they get to our airspace.

Forgive my ignorance on the subject, but what right do we have to escort them away if they're not in our airspace? Are we actually ordering them away - or just flying next to them until they turn around?

The same ground troops who Russia are bombing you mean? the Turkmen are fighting against Assad = Russia are bombing them.

So people complain that the west dethroned saddam and ghadaffi but it's fine now to try the same with assad with ISIL at the gates?

Russia aren't just bombing the rebels, otherwise why would isil have blown up a Russian airliner for bombing isil.

Assuming Russia did violate Turkish airspace NATO aren't in any position to lecture them about it when they've been operating illegally in Syria for so long. I think what Turkey has done is very irresponsible especially when Russia are targetting terrorists, moderate or not. Those who bombed Paris could well have been moderate how can you tell? it's ridiculous to try and categorize them on an extremism scale.

It's interesting to see the resident Putin fanboys foaming. What will the big man do now? Bugger all, probably, because unlike his other recent 'enemies', Turkey is not a bankrupt defenseless country. :)

Oh and let's not forget Turkey's airspace was violated repeatedly which goes to show the amateurish nature of the great Russian airforce.

It's dangerous to poke the Russian bear.
