Russian SU-24 - Shot Down by Turkey

Russian aircraft enter British airspace all the time and we don't shoot them down. ****in' uppity Turks.

On the recent ocassions where it has been reported and Typhoon's have been scrambled to intercept, have those Russian plane's actually been within UK controlled airspace? Were they not within uncontrolled/international but very close to entering? I remember a few reports but unsure they were physcially within UK airspace or not.

There was a loaded Russian cruiser in the Moray Firth up here, we seen it from here. It took days for anything to get here from Portsmouth.... And then just the other day there was a report of a "Russian sub" spotted off Scotland coast, unsure where.

But I get the point, in all these situations, never have we blasted them to pieces for non communication or ignorance during a 10 minute window!

Again the soviets ignored the radio calls and have been ignoring Turkish sovereign airspace - Russia even announced that Lebanon airports had to close because of cruise missiles!

naturally they ignored that as well

You are still falling into the trap here of 100% believing something that hasn't even been confirmed..... There is no proof that the Russian plane even entered Turkish airspace as of yet. It's the Turks words against the Russians right now and I believe it will take another country stepping in with data to overrule the country which is telling porkies.

Indeed, we almost shot down a transport plane which failed to make radio contact, so we are more than willing to do it.

Was that the instance where the Typhoon triggered a sonic boom on way to intercept? As a seperate note, that would have been super cool

Flightradar24 already has the info that proves it.

Yes - when needed the QRA aircraft go`mach busting` from take off , its rare as supersonic at low level in a climb makes a lot of noise and shock wave.

as an aside - above 31000 feet and mach 1.2 or lower you don't hear the boom ;)

It's interesting to see the resident Putin fanboys foaming. What will the big man do now? Bugger all, probably, because unlike his other recent 'enemies', Turkey is not a bankrupt defenseless country. :)

Oh and let's not forget Turkey's airspace was violated repeatedly which goes to show the amateurish nature of the great Russian airforce.

He will huff and puff for the domestic audience that's for sure but there is not a lot else tough guy will do in the real world apart from cut some links with Turkey.

British airspace extends beyond our sovereign territory, which is true of most nations with a coastline. So a Russian jet could enter our airspace without being shot down, just as we can enter theirs. It's when they enter our sovereign territory that they will be shot down, which is why they never do.

In this case, they entered Turkish sovereign territory, which is why they were shot down.
