Russian SU-24 - Shot Down by Turkey

Both Turkish and Russian radar images show the jet near the border covering a distance that would take many minutes to cover, not 35 seconds. It is very possible they gave 10 warnings
Is this comment based on you looking at a map and guessing how long it would take a jet to cover that distance? Fag packet calculations all seem to point to around 30 seconds.

So when they come over here, we shouldn't bother sending jets up?

You do know how fast jets fly???

At 500mph you doing over 8 miles per minute. That plane shot down was capable of doing about 3 times that speed.

Turkey have chased that plane and shot it down, for the whole 17 seconds it intruded there air space.

Madness.

No it doesn't, Turkey's official statement to NATO said the plane was in Turkish Airspace for exactly 17 seconds.

iIrc Turkey already warned Russia some time ago, that incursions will be dealt with, after many events where Russian drones would be found flying over Turkey. So I'm not really suprised this one ended how it did. Turkey most likely has some jets patrolling areas near Syria border at all times, with civil war going and stuff.

If someone was walking in my backyard and wouldn't respond to warnings I'd take out my pithcfork too.

17 seconds or 1 second, it's not your backyard, gtfo or "get rekt".

At the end of the day if we shared a border with Syria with the way things are right now we'd have shot it down too. You don't take chances when your next door neighbours are IS.

How long will Turkey be allowed to remain in NATO given the evidence there is to suggest that it is facilitating terrorists/IS? (i.e. oil revenues, allowing foreign fighters through the border etc.) Presumably if Russia did respond then NATO would do as they did when the Argentines invaded the Falklands and just shrug their shoulders.

Was the US pulling patriot missiles out of Turkey earlier on this year a precursor to reducing NATO presence in Turkey?

I can't imagine NATO wanting one on the largest armies in the alliance to leave, not to mention its usefulness as a base of operations.

I doubt it as well. But if it is true about Turkey then it's rather hypocritical of the west to count them as allies whilst simultaneously "waging war" on someone they support.

Turkey got butthurt because Russia destroyed ISIS oil refineries and the oil supply fleet on Monday with US help. This was their reaction to it. There are some very dirty hands in the Turk government, not least Erdogan.

also quoting e-goat as an RAF quote is akin to using any comment from here as UK foreign policy.

Majority of RAF don't use that site as its a joke.

Shivering with fear at turkey being in NATO?

We used turkish airbases as a staging point for op northern watch in Iraq since gulf war 1.

We used them to support op telic and herrick in more recent years in a logistics role.

I'd be expanding your understanding of NATO before worrying itchy tbh.

The US are using Turkish bases to fly from right now too.

no they don't enter our airspace - the QRA lads meet them in international airspace.

if Newcastle was being overflown on a daily basis after ignoring radio calls, the RAF would shoot them down as well

Err...they do. Which is why I posted as I did. There were reports during the summer, linked ti from this forum, of Russian aircraft flying over Cornwall.

I suggest you check your facts before you make blanket statements. The mod stated the bear bombers never entered sovereign airspace. I can't remember a single instance where Russia has entered our airspace in the last few years. The fact we scramble jets when they fly close to our airspace should show you that it's not something we take lightly.

Care to find me some details of this?

Because:

RAF jets were scrambled on Wednesday after two Russian military aircraft were seen off the Cornwall coast, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The Russian Bear bombers did not enter sovereign airspace, it said.

As above.............

What a mess. The Russians and the Turks are effectively on opposite sides in Northern Syria, something like this was bound to happen eventually.

Exacerbated by the Turkmen militia committing a war crime by murdering one or both of the pilots.

I know Russia has been bringing back the fine art of brinkmanship recently...but really...there's no way on earth they genuinely thought the Russia bomber was a threat to Turkey.
