Any tips on getting started...in terms of enjoying it I mean? I've tried twice to get in to it and I didnt like the setting and was just surround in half finished/ugly buildings! Chopped some wood and came across a guy who shot me dead.
Join a very low populated server, or empty. Learn the mechanics watch a yourube video or two, check the steam community. Just learn to build and how the game works. Playing with a friends or join a group helps too
My friend bought it last week, he's obsessed now.
My tips:
Make a map.
Search for streams to drink from.
Eat everything you can find from boxes and mushrooms.
Craft basic hatchet and pick axe.
Gather hemp.
Gather about 2000 stone and wood.
Make a bow and 10 arrows ASAP.
Check the map for roads and rad towns.
Build a 2 high 1x1 close but hidden from a rad town and other bases if possible.
Make a door and lock (I only lock it when I'm inside, keep a key in a chest in the base).
Place tool cupboard, sleeping bag and chests.
Hunt animals for food and fat.
Craft a furnace or two.
Cook 100 metal fragments (search on how to do it quicker).
Make code lock.
Cook 150 more.
Make Sheet metal door.
(This bit is terrifing on larger pop servers!) Take off key lock, open wood door, pick up wood door, place sheet metal door and put the code lock on, enter code and relax!
Later add a triangle foundation in front of your front door and seal one side up with stone and then add another sheet metal door and code lock. Now you won't loose all your stuff if someone kills you when you open the door.
Mark your location on your map (I do a biggish circle so not to show exactly where my base is if I'm killed).
Get components for crafting from loot piles.
That's my order every wipe
remember Rust is one of the hardest games you can ever play, you will be punished for every dam mistake you make, I have just shy of a 1000hrs and I'm still learning and the game is constantly evolving. Stick with it and remember everyone gets raided and killed, everyone. Don't get attached to your loot or base. Try and be a friendly neighbour, watch there bases and perhaps they will do like wise, I like to earn there trust by offering food or the odd component.
Enjoy!
