I mean the 7950X3D is still the better CPU right, it's just that the 7800X3D is quite a bit cheaper?
I'm unsure whether to cancel my 7950X3D pre-order and put in a pre-order for a 7800X3D...
Tough call.

There's not a lot in terms of gaming performance between the 2.

7800x3d + £300 extra to spend on a gfx card

or the King Allrounder

For apps which aren't dependent on large L3 cache or can run on the 8 non-3d cores then 7950 will benefit from faster clocks and more cores.
For gaming when 7950 is limited to the 8 3d-cores should be similar ... while 7800 seems to have a lower frequency limit that the 7950 has for 3d cores there will still be some extra L3 overhead on the 7950 as when it needs to load new data into the L3 it will have some additional coherency traffic to check that the data isn't in the other CCD.

Ah no way its just come in stock lol, I was looking for about a week and have the ASUS coming on Saturday, oh well! :D

Comparing them, the MSI I'd say is slightly better, but they're much of a muchness. Both PCIE5 GPU + primary NVME (MSI has 1 extra PCIE slot but the extras are all slower), 4 total NVME slots, a few less USB ports on the MSI. Roughly the same audio, ethernet and wifi). You should be good either way I think!

Thanks for your advice.

I mean it largely comes down to what you want from the CPU. The 7950x3d at the end of the day is probably going to equal (at worst you can turn the second CCD off if the scheduling isn't playing nice) or very very very marginely beat it if the game does use more cores or likes higher frequency. However that's probably not worth an extra £300 if all you do is game, you also don't need to mess with turning off ccd's or doing any process lasso shenanigans to get the absolute best gaming performance too, that's of course unless you're rich and enjoy the tinkering. If you do plan on using the extra 8 cores then the 7950x3d makes a lot more sense and is probably a good option for productivity + gaming if the games you play benefit from the 3d cache. If the games you play don't benefit from the cache then I guess the standard 7950x makes more sense as it's a bit better for productivity.

That all said it seems like if you put a pre-order in for the 7800x3d now, you'll be waiting till May so I guess there's an urgency question now too, whether you mind waiting.

Identical specs to me! I'm using the 990 already (got it last week), just waiting on the CPU to come now :D

I also got in the Fractal Torrent Compact and Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 ready to slap on it too.

I think I got one. Can’t fault OcUK at all. Compared to their main competitor they are miles above them for getting release day projects. To say thank you am gonna buy the rest of my items for my build from OcUK today

It's a shame how poor UK release is handled by AMD. Newegg in the US had 7800x3ds for 2 hours plus. OCUK do a great job with communication at least!

I was thinking you could always turn off the second CCD if having issues, but then I noticed a few review sites have been saying that if you go from a 7950X3D to a 7800X3D (unlikely for most of us) that it still seems to park cores, but now it's parking ones that could be used as they're on the same CCD. The solution is apparently to do a clean install of Windows. So I'm just wondering if you might suffer the same issue disabling a CCD on a 7950X3D?
