S939 A64 IHS Removal

Right, I'm fed up with the high temps on my opty and I seem to fall only 80mhz short of 3.0Ghz :(

I was wondering whether this blade will do the job?

Big risk for 80Mhz mate., See how it fits under the IHS then have a little go.

well to be honest it's hardly stable on anything over 2.8Ghz, and 2.92Ghz is the max I can do a PI 1M in due to the high temps. It was over 60 with stock cooler and about 52-53 with 1.6V put through it with an evo 120 on full speed.

Main reason is the temps.

you're right. It didn't get under. I did however manage to carve off part of my karajan sound module so I could put my Evo 120 on the rightway right, which made temps drop by a few degrees :)

Still quite high though. Will have to look around for thin blades.

Sorry to hijack the thread slightly...
but does anyone know how to get more than 1.50volts from an A8N SLI-Premium ?
Older BIOS churns out 1.55 but the CPU still does the same voltage, huh…

Mr Mister the Zalman will require modding if it uses a retention bracket or if the base of the cooler overlaps the chip and rests on the raised socket part.

Removed mine yesterday and it took all of 2 mins. My Dad has this wilkinson sword razor and the blades are very thin that they bend. They are double sided though so I folded some card over the one side. Came of easy with this method and did not knock any components off or scratch the PCB.

No everything went fine taking the ihs off, i run my pc plain on my desk no case etc, so there is just a mobo on some mounts ontop of my desk, and i have a akasa evo33, they speed controller, i stand it up between the heatsinks on the board, well just got my expert back from rma, and the speed controller slipped and tocuhed a capaciter right next to the cpu socket and nuked it.

after examing the cpu this happened

My camera sucks, but the corner of that chip has blew off, and there is just a pin sitting there.

Removing the IHS dropped my temps around 5c

Idle ~34c / Load ~44c - Swiftech WC & Opty 146 @ 2.8 (will test it back at 3.0 when new Asus bios fixes the mobo :p)

So it does'nt work at all now?

it dropped mine about 7 or 8 for a week.

No the chip was un detected in the sli-dr expert - that had blew anyway its @ RMA again

but the ultra-D wouldnt detect it either, so i bought a X2 4400+ dropped it in the Ultra-D and running fine.

Well I just refitted the IHS on an opteron 144. How thick is the TIM that comes off the top of the die when removing Jokester? I put a really thin layer of AS5 on athlon XP stlye then put the IHS on to see if there was a contact patch there wasnt so i put some more on and there was. I then refitted the IHS with black sealant and rested my spare PSU on it for 15 minutes. I then fitted the CPU in to my pc and the idle temp is fine 38/40 but the load tems shoots up to 56 almost instantly do you think i need to try it again or give the AS5 a chance to settle?
cheers
Scott
