S939 A64 IHS Removal

I acquired an opteron 146 CAYBE today and it worked fine at 3Ghz but the load temperature on the Vapochill kept increasing from -15 to 10 so I decided to remove the IHS. There is no noticeable damage but the furthest I can get is detecting 1024MB of RAM and then the computer turns itself off. Somehow I don't thinks it a coldbug.

it may well be a cold bug. try it with a suitable air cooler which will eliminate that possibility if it isnt the cold bug.

You checked that the mounting isn't leaving a gap between the cpu and the sink?

There is defintely no gap, it left an imprint in the non-conductive paste. Would increasing the voltages prevent the coldbug?

to some degree. if it makes it hot enough not for the cold bug to set in then it could work.

I tried it using just a heatsink, the core warmed up and the computer restarted repeatly. RIP opteron 146

i just screwed my water block down onto mine but i think you would really have to give it some force to bust the core on one of those chips.

The chip reached the BIOS finally and it now shuts down when its almost finished detecting the drives. The chip feels cold when I touch immediately afterwards. Is the problem still temperature related, condensation shorting a circuit or is the chip damaged?

From the photo I think you're problem is pin melt to be honest.

What is pin melt? There is no sign of melting.

Sorry, I thought you weren't serious.

If you're using a Vapochill you must increase the reach of the head to ensure that it makes full contact with the core otherwise it will overheat quickly.

Also, what on earth have you coated the surface mount components with? It also looks as if you've also burnt the PCB with something?

It looks like its covered in dielectric grease jokester, have you tried cleaning all that off and running it?

Yeah I would clean it off and try again.

Also refer to post 41 as to what to do to get full contact with a Vapochill (assuming you're using a clamshell).

Well I tried it with my Opti 144 and after a few bent pins and getting nowhere with either stanley knife/ modelling knife/ scaple I gave up.
