George Russell is almost universally held in high regard across the grid by drivers, team bosses and technical staff (certainly at the team(s)) he has worked with directly.

Vandorne less so.
Even though his performances against Alonso were resepectable:

He does not seem to have the same level of respect, even when he came in as a reserve and outqualified Button in 2006, whilst also scoring points on his debut.

I expect that Mercedes know what they have with Vandorne, and George is a little more of an enigma as he has not faced up against a "top" driver in the same machinery.

George qualifying as close to Bottas in a car that is not really comfortable and has a lot of very different procedures/menus and processes that he has had to deploy in anger is VERY impressive.
In fact, I would wager that had Vandorne put in exactly the same result, it would have been perceived as less impressive given his time/position within the team. (Note that I said LESS impressive, not that it would be not be impressive in its own right!)

I think the problem here is that whilst his 2017 season is okay; his 2018 was poor. Whitewash in quali and 50-12 on points is a crushing defeat, when you expect things to get closer in the second season.

I was really expecting more from Stoffel, he really impressed with that stand-in in 2016 but he didn't deliver in his full time seasons and certainly didn't seem like a future champion. In different circumstances I think he could have ended up as a solid midfield regular like Hülk but that wasn't to be, and it's hard to argue that he was a better choice than Sainz or Norris.

Maybe the better comparison for us to have seen would’ve been George against Lewis. I.e. if Bottas was out sick instead and George took his place.

If Max wins today you can bet there will be a decent contract offer sliding over the table to Lewis shortly after.

That might depend on Russell. If Russell puts in a good show then perhaps Mercedes might decide that it's time for fresh blood. And what better time for Hamilton to retire from F1 than at the top? Perhaps he might follow Alonso to the Indy 500?

Great to see Mick getting the F2 championship; he might not be his dad but he's beaten one of the most talented F2 grids I think we've ever seen.

Will be great to see Mick and Tsunoda in F1 next year; not arsed about Mazepin

Bottas can't be happy with that p1. So so close...

Getting 2nd place, maybe, but landing 0.016s behind Bottas? That's seriously impressive.

It is always going to be close, and it's not 'that' impressive. The track is only slightly over 2miles long, and the times are sub 1m.

If you put them at Spa, the gaps would be much bigger.
