My degree is: BSc (Hons) Software Engineering. So I can tell you precisely what the difference is between computer science and software engineering is.
.

Neither are actual engineering really though are they?

Unless you're a mechanical Engineer of the Matrix?

Riiiiiggggghhhhtttttttttt

The only difference I've ever found between SE grads vs CS grads is the later seem a little less easy to integrate into projects straight from uni.

A lot of SE types **** me off, with worrying about very small detail, causing massive delays in projects when it could have been done to the same standard they're advocating if they just stopped having meetings to discuss user case documents and actually did their bloody job:o

Thx for proving my point.

Oil does look good fun. I'm sure there was a guy on here who posted regular updates and at one stage had to light some waste burning/flue with a shotgun of sorts. 2/3 weeks on then 2 weeks off sounds great :D

It does, even if the job turns out to be a bit boring at least you get half the year off...:p

The only "problem" as such is HSE, it is VERY strict in the oil industry, to the point almost too much, even the environmental side is strict, spill a litre of petrol and fill out half a dozen forms, spill a jerry can full and fill out a dozen forms, explain to the client why it happened and how you are going to sort it out and stop it happening again, spill a tanker/1000L and you may as well kill yourself...:p

Not with a relationship or young family. It's got a seriously high rate of family relationship problems.

That is the only issue, but at the moment i'm free of any commitments and the only major hich is the GF, who I would probably end up seeing more as we currently reside at the other sides of the country from each other. She also had a father who worked in oil as well (coincidentally) so knows what it's like.

Interestingly enough she actually admitted that although she didn't see him for weeks at a time, overall she probably saw/did stuff with him more than all her friends as when he was home he had nothing else to do.:p

If you were an engineer you'd be earning a lot more money, so I think thats case closed. Job title engineering for the lose :(

not sure you could necessarily base your arguments around compensation

I mean a 'Financial Engineer' probably ears a heck of a lot more than other 'Engineers' (probably has higher qualifications on average too tbh...)but is perhaps even less of an engineer still in terms of what people like to traditionally think of when they hear the term 'engineer'.

I could throw a spanner at the largest mobile network on earth - will that do?

I agree, engineering belittles a lot of the work of software creation. About the only thing that's more complex is the human body.

No, that would be a terrorist. :p

Who designed the rocket to put the satellites in space that form part of the telephone communication system before Bill Gates got near anything like that.

you don't happen to work for Cap do you amiga? Either that or Fuji I reckon!

If so, get out, move on! ;)

They only stole ideas from nature as well. Personally I think it's just the older "professional professions" attempting to maintain their "elite" status.

No, by the sounds of it, he works for HP but came in under the Image acquisition

Ah, we still have some image contract employees knocking about within Cap and Fuji (We share a building). Can't wait till I leave though! :)

I aim for age + 000. So 25000 at the moment.

And I agree, the only way to earn money is to move companies, you need to hop twice to get to where you need to be, then if you want another place, hop twice more to get there and so on

+ aerospace, general (cambridge) & electrical.

Software is not a pure engineering disapline.

If you could take a program design out of the virtual space and into a 3D model it would be classed as engineering in the same way a jet engine is a product of engineering.

I know someone who was a rocket scientist, he wasn't an engineer in name yet I'm betting by most people's definitions he was one.
