Samsung 870 EVO any problems known

helo guys of 870 evo users,
did one of you record the full process in a video to update the firmware in Samsung magicien ? is it take long ? 1min ? more ? i can't find any video of the process... (by video, i mean official & dedicated to this model only)
It is such a simple process a video is not required. The process is the same for every Samsung model. I suggest you just try it and come back if you have a problem.

As @Snapshot says, it's such a simple process that's really nothing to see other than a message telling you to restart the computer.

formatted in Linux as i was testing it in that, then added back into windows and then did a full scan with magician with no lba failure reported

My personal opinion (from looking at your smart data) is that your drive is not affected by this problem and doesn't need to be replaced, but as for other faults, I can't comment.

FYI folks, Samsung state on their website that there have been design changes since Nov 2022. I'm hoping my drive being Jan2023 is therefore not affected. Will see how it fares.

I am probably going to be buying a 500gb 870 evo sata ssd to replace my ageing 120gb 840 pro sata ssd, but I will buy it from the forest and then if it fails it will be a nice simple swap within a few days....

Heres the smart info on my 840 pro that Ive had for 9yrs in May and the wear level has dropped to 80%.. The write speed should be about 390mb in ATTO, but has dropped a bit for some reason, but still not bad for a 9yr old ssd hey?

Picked up a 1TB 870 Evo cheap to upgrade an older laptop, it is on the latest firmware, haven't checked manufacturing date, so far no issues after cloning the original OS drive to it and doing a few tests.

Purchased a 2TB 870 EVO on 21st June 2021 direct from Amazon, used in a UGREEN USB C enclosure.
Yesterday noticed some of my Steam games said 'Install' instead of 'Play'. Tested SSD in a second matching enclosure.

Event Viewer has Event ID: 55 from 30th April 2023. "A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume E:."
Filesystem is showing as RAW instead of NTFS in disk management.
Searching '/r/datarecovery' they suggested Recuva (long time user) is mediocre, tested demo for R-Studio then paid for it (demo to see if data is recoverable first etc)

Found this thread as I was creating a disk image with R-Studio (currently 20% off today) , which is showing a lot of OS I/O errors in the logs.
Paused the disk image creation to check the manufactured date - 2021.01/January 2021
Serial number begins with S621N, same as Snapshot.

Luckily the primary usage was just game libraries, but I'm taking a clone just to see if anything else was on there.

I will update the thread with my findings after I reformat the disk and run my data recovery on the cloned image.
Hopefully it's a simple RMA process if it's already a known issue.

Did you check the drive stats with something like CrystalDiskInfo?

I've tried, but all I get is health status unknown. Samsung magician can't see the disk either. I think it was visible in the past, but with greyed out options because of the caddy.
Creating an image wasn't successful either.

Not given it much time, but I'll share any results if they appear.
Caddy supports UASP - so I can rule that out. (Tested with a second caddy of the same model)

For the record, if you do manage to get read by magician, bad blocks often disappear after a reformat (on long scan), but the other stuff (reserved blocks used, ecc errors) will stay. This can have implication for third party testing, depending on how they do it, but Samsung themselves should be fine.

did r-studio managed to clone the disk even with bad cell/sector ?
i'm still searching for a tools to perform that before i formate/update firmware...:

Im getting a 500gb SATA in a few days, so I'll post some screenies of a fresh new drive.

Ah yeah I dont know if this helps but always secure erase or sanitize my SSDs before reinstalling or recovering windows back onto a SSD, I never quick or long format them. For some reason sanitize will only work for my samsung 840 pro, as the ssd is always in a frozen state when I try and do secure erase, but sanitize always works.

Unfortunately not in my scenario. They do have a demo available though, so you can always give it a try.

I'm not sure of the extent of the damage to my disk, as it won't do anything for me. If your disk is still reading, then it's more likely to work.

RMA email typed out and sent to [email protected]

- Checked Event Viewer - Event ID: 55 from 30th April 2023. "A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume E:."
- Checked Disk Management - Filesystem is showing as RAW instead of NTFS. Disk is visible.
- Checked if disk shows in Samsung magician - disk not visible.
- Attempted clone/image creation using R-Studio - shows large quantity of OS I/O errors. Fails.
- Attempted to check health stats of drive using Crystal Disk View - disk shows as unknown.
- Tested using another UGREEN 2.5 Inch Hard Drive Enclosure (UASP compatible) - same results.
- Tested on another device (Surface Pro 3) - same results.
- Attempted direct scan from R-Studio - cannot complete due to I/O errors.
- Attempted 'chkdsk e: /r' as administrator - "An unspecified error occurred"
- Attempted to 'clean' disk using diskpart - "DiskPart has encountered an error: Incorrect function."
- Attempted to delete partitions using diskpart - "DiskPart has encountered an error: Incorrect function."

samsung has had issues ever since the 840 evo series of drives. usually performance degradation over time or other issues. i dont bother with samsung drives now since there are plenty of alternatives with known track records of reliability.

I wasn't planning on it either but I couldn't resist when I saw a 2TB 970 EVO Plus for £76. I'll just use it for unimportant stuff for the first few months and after that I'd consider it as reliable as any other SSD as these problems tend to show up early.

install the samsung driver for it. You'll get much better performance

Ive just run ATTO today and now the write speeds are just over the 500mb/s mark, but when I installed the drive yesterday, the writes were only in the 350mb/s mark.
