Samsung Galaxy Note: 5.3", 1200x800 SuperAMOLED, S-PEN stylus, 2500mAh attery... *phew*

From Clove, due on the 3rd:

Following Samsung’s official announcement yesterday, we can now confirm that the first stock of the SIM-free Samsung Galaxy Note 16GB Blue/Black is due to be here on 3rd November. At the moment this is the only variant of the Note that we expect to receive on launch.

Various video tests.

Samsung really do have good codec support built in.

Made a polystyrene mockup of the phone today to get some perspective of size and whether it will fit in my pocket.

Guys, guys, it's bloody enormous. The videos are great and the stylus isn't even a bad idea, but all the time you're not using it you're walking round with massive brick in your pocket (and don't forget to add the extra few mm to all dimensions if you put a case on it.)

I'm a tiny bit tempted but no, not really. :p

All these people talking up how amazing a phone this big will be have got to put their money where their mouth is now.

To me it doesn't matter. I regularly carry an iPhone and iPod in the same pocket, which is quite thick and will probably be more awkward than this phone. Additionally I never had a problem keeping a PSP or DS in my pocket when I used to use mine out so much.

In fact, mentioning my DS, I've just picked it up and measured it. If you hold the DS closed in a portrait orientation, The Galaxy Note is only 15mm larger in height, 9mm larger in width, and 12mm thinner in depth.

So anyone who's been fine with handheld consoles in their pocket will be more than fine with a Galaxy not. I think its size has been exaggerated quite a bit really.

I actually have pretty well sized hands and I'm sure I could use it comfortably, but I still think the Galaxy Nexus is a better option here.

I'm thinking of getting one to use as a tablet to replace my Archos 5IT.
I hope Samsung releases a cheaper non-3G version.

Barring portability, the Note specs blow the Nexus out of the water:

  • 1.4ghz Exynos vs 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4460 processor
  • Mali-400 vs PowerVR 540 (same as was in the Nexus S... 20 months ago).
  • 8MP camera from SGSII which is regarded as a top shooter vs a 5MP camera that has produces questionable shots in previews.
  • 2500mAh battery vs 1750mAh battery (I know size dictates this, but the battery is still a monster).

Matter of opinion:

  • 5.3" screen vs 4.65" screen... you either like the size increase or you dont but ereading, browsing and movie watching will be better on the Note.

For anyone whom the size is not an issue, the Note really is a media powerhouse, pure and simple.

I'm not sure I'd go with 'blow it out of the water', and the 8MP camera in the Note doesn't seem to be identical to the one in the Galaxy S II, Engadget didn't speak that highly of it -

It's safe to say that the device offered more than acceptable performance. That's to be expected, as it appears to be using the same sensor and camera getup we've loved in the other Galaxy S II iterations thus far. During our indoor shoot, the camera was able to balance color and exposure properly with most subjects in still mode. The autofocus worked well most of the time and the built-in flash popped with the correct amount of power -- our subjects were not blown out. We needed to stay a few inches away from subjects in order to get the camera to focus, even in macro mode -- so don't expect to be able to snap extreme close-ups. Also, noise was an issue in darker scenes and the camera was unable to compensate for low light in some areas. In video mode, noise was a problem too, but in a different sort of way: the mic seemed a bit overboosted, picking up quite a whoosh with the slightest hint of a breeze. When filming, the camera had a difficult time focusing and exposing at times, with some elements left soft or overexposed. White balance was generally acceptable, but it did take a few seconds for the camera to adjust when moving quickly between scenes.

It doesn't sound as excellent as the Galaxy S II, that's for sure, though you would expect it to be the same.

I thought people were apparently impressed with the Nexus camera? If it's rubbish then obviously that's not good.

This is all it really comes down to in the end. If the size does not bother you, you basically have an S2 on steroids, and the S2 overall is probably the best phone available atm. I really like the idea of an S2 with a larger and much higher res screen, and this is exactly that. The Nexus isnt.

Will wait to see it in the shops first to see how comfortably it fits in my pockets. It doesn't bother me in the least bit what other people would think of me having a 'large' phone.
