Samsung Galaxy Note: 5.3", 1200x800 SuperAMOLED, S-PEN stylus, 2500mAh attery... *phew*

I thought I'd follow up with my impressions after a few days use as it may be useful for others also umming and arring over whether it is the right device for them.

Firstly the size; I must admit that the first day I woke up and grabbed it from my bedside table I wondered if I'd made a mistake. It felt large - very large. But I'm gradually getting used to it. I will certainly need to use my old mobile on a few occasions. But you do get used to it fairly quickly and it is true when people say you look at normal phones and they just seem too small now. It fits fairly comfortably in most pairs of trousers I've worn. It is more noticable in jeans but still ok (shorts in summer may be another issue though). The issue with size if not really how it feels in your pocket but not being able to comfortably use the device with a single hand. That is the only real downsize and I now realise how much I had been doing that.

My first day in the office was quite funny as it drew a lot of attention; mostly people laughing at the size but equally liking how different it is to other phones.

However I absolutely adore this device now. It is an pleasure to use. It is fast and the screen real estate is great. The keyboard is much easier to use than smaller phones. I did buy a new bluetooth earpiece as I was planning on using that for calls. But I find the call quality is so good on the phone itself that I'd rather whip it out of my pocket and use the phone itself. The call quality is better than any phone I've had in the past.

Right now I couldn't see me downsizing in the near future. It is just too good for most things and it makes the slightly large size worth the slight inconvenience.

I wanted it as a convergence device and that is exactly what it is working out to be. email and texts are a breeze. Internet is a dream. I will use it for music and videos too shortly and when I get a new TV I'll probably stream films from it onto the TV (extra cable required). I've even just bought a £10 car cradle and splashed out on Co-Pilot rather than buying a second sat nav. When I get the desktop dock then I will also probably use it as a radio alarm clock (with internet radio and myh normal music collection).

When I bought the Note I had almost bought the Nexus instead. Obviously I can't say how much I would have liked that phone as I haven't owned one. But I have no regrets in buying this over the Nexus. It was the right choice for me personally. very happy :)

Nice review hades, pretty much agree with everything.

Have you rooted yet? If not get it done and install lcd density to 240. Absolutely now I think the most important application.

What does this Lcd density do exactly?

Allows you to effectively increase the resolution of the screen, so you can fit more on it.

It's not bulletproof though, I remember some people using it on the Galaxy S II to make it a qHD res and a lot of people on XDA pulled them up saying it wasn't the same thing (with good reasons, I just can't remember them :p).

For clarity, the version of the app I use is made by elviss kustans and I use killall reboot and 240 dpi

The good thing about it is that when you reboot it goes back to normal, so you can test it without worrying. Give it a go and see :-)

Is this screen some type of gorilla glass? or do I need to buy some protection?

Is there some easy method to load the camer/camcorde as I keep having to go to the apps etc and would like some easy way of loading it, ie holding a button down for a few seconds etc

Thanks so much !!

Create a shortcut on your home screen or in the dock? I don't use the default launcher any more but I think you do this by long pressing the shortcut from the app drawer.

The screen is unbranded toughened glass, will be as good or better than gorilla glass. I put a screen protector on mine but pulled it off after an hour. I definitely recommend going naked, the best thing about the phone is the screen and the protector took away from that. If you email me your address I'll be happy to post you a couple, I don't recommend using them though :-)

After having numerous phones with and without gorilla glass I would reccommend not taking this advice. Put a GOOD protector on and keep it on, otherwise you will regret it down the line when you get microscratches or worse on that pretty screen. The size alone will make it more subsceptible than the average phone.

Having driven a 300 mile round trip in one day I thought I'd write a brief overview of using the Note as a GPS. Shortly before I bought the Note I was considering buying a new satnav. I've used Tom Tom for years and with a second car I was considering another stand alone unit. But, having just bought the note I thought I'd take advantage of the Co-Pilot offer of 20% off. After tax, etc, it cost less than £20 to install it from the market. I also bought a cheap car cradle from the purple shirt place as I happened to be passing and I had a long trip coming up.

Overall I am very happy with Co-Pilot. I had read very mixed reviews and didn't think it would stand up to Tom Tom. However I think much of that is due to people being used to Tom Tom or Garmin or whatever. I did experience some issues while using it but none that were deal breakers for me.

Ease of Use

I found the cheap cradle more adjustable than the Tom Tom units I've used. But it wasn't quite as securely held on the screen. While this will vary with the cradle you buy, it should be noted that the Note is quite large and so will put more strain on the cradle. However I was able to adjust the cradle to exactly the right position (with the Tom Tom cradles I often find it at a slight angle unless I take a lot of care positioning in). I bought a cheap £10 cradle rather than the official one. No complaints so far.

The UI on Co-Pilot is certainly not as intuitive as Tom Tom. The default settings out of the box are not what I expect (e.g. I had to change the voice from US to UK and adjust the display to include my current speed and ETA for arrival (I like current speed on there as I glance at it when checking the speed limit of the current road).

Flexibility

Unlike a stand alone unit there is a lot more to configure if you want to. You can change the colours, what is shown on screen and such items as multiple early warnings for cameras and turnings. The downside of this is that you have to put some thought into what you want rather than just accept the defaults.

Map Accuracy

Accuracy was fine although it did take me a slightly different route than my Tom Tom. TT definitely took me a more straight forward route and kept me on more major roads. But I suspect I may be able to play with the options more to get it to act the same. I do prefer Tom Tom in this respect but there's not a huge difference.

Software Bugs

I have to be honest that I found a couple of isues with Co-Pilot. Both were with the speed cameras and road speed. On one occasion I found it was showing a different speed limit to the current speed limit on the road (but I can't confirm if TT would show anything different as I'd not been on this road before). Also the speed camera alert was often shown in different places on the screen. I suspect the high screen resolution may be confusing it.

The Display

In a word.. great! 5.3" stuck on your windscreen is very noticable and it gives a good view. However the high resolution does result in some of the information icons and messages being quite small to read.

Speed

This thing destroys my Tom Tom for locating satellites and mapping a route. Seriously it can get a GPS lock while in my house if near a window. It does it very quickly and can map a route (or apply corrections if you veer off course) far quicker than my stand alone unit.

Volume

About the same as my Tom Tom. So when the music is loud then it is hard to hear but no worse than the stand alone unit.

This has beena very high level overview while I'm drunk so probably not the best review at all. But I would summarise it by saying that I found my older Tom Tom unit better overall. However I'd put the Note + Co-Pilot at around 80% to 90% as good and a massive fraction of the price (£20 for the software + £10 for the cradle).

And the biggest plus is... the phone is fully charged when you arrive at your destination :D

Still loving the phone.

The Note possibly has the best GPS of any phone on the market, certainly in terms of speed. I believe it's the first phone on the market with Broadcom's latest GPS chip and since it uses both GPS and GLONASS satellites, it has almost double the coverage of the SGSII.

I'm able to get a lock from 12 satellites inside my house, and that's not even at a window. It's really very good.

That's interesting to know. I hadn't appreciated it had a better GPS in it than other phones. It is astoundingly quick to lock on and you're right about being able to get the signal even when not near a window.

There's a new OTA firmware update available. I know it's available for German sourced phones, not sure about other regions yet.

I've not updated yet, but others on XDA have reported further performance increases and a bunch of other tweaks, including a new torch widget and one handed keyboard mode.
