Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

What's the cheapest this can be had sim free or payG.

Has anyone swapped from iphone to this? how did they find it. My Iphone is pretty much a brick since os4.

:( far to much to spend, Was hoping the low 200's

That is the price of low end smartphones, you are going to be paying over £300 at the very least for a good one.

With regard to your earlier question, the Galaxy S wipes the floor with the iPhone, iPhone 3G and 3GS, no question.

well this problem installing flash is driving me mad, i just found out theres flashed already isntalled but it wont work and i cant uninstall it, adb said i didnt ahve premission X_X.

Yup I swapped my iphone 3G this morning for a Galaxy S since OS4 made it unusable and I refuse to give Apple the money for a new iPhone given the 3G was fine until I was forced to update!

I'm on the fence about the phone at the moment and thinking I may just go back to the 3G despite it running dog slow. Thoughts below:

PROS:
1. Awsome screen
2. VERY fast compared to the 3G
3. Can play Divx videos straight off so no more converting
4. Great speakers compared to the 3G. Really loud!
5. No iTunes
6. Very customisable

CONS:
1. Cannot cut and paste from within the Gmail application into an SMS or web browser... I mean come on! The iphone was made fun of for this and this is the flagship Android device and can't do it. Earlier today I had an email with a reference number. I had to write it down to then use it in the browser.
2. Cannot cut and paste from within the SMS application either so I can't copy text from a message into the browser like an address, etc.
3. It downloads ALL contacts from Gmail rather than like the Desire where you can select the "My Contacts" group only. This means everyone I have replied to via email in Gmail is now in my contact list. I've got round this by selecting "Only show contacts who have a phone number".
4. The alarm is flaky and won't always work when the phone has been in sleep mode. I've used my iphone alarm for 2 years almost everyday without fail.
5. The Wifi is the same as the alarm. For some reason it won't always connect back to the wifi at home when the phone comes out of sleep.
6. The GPS is flaky and can jump around a lot. There are a lot of posts about this on the Android forums and apparently Samsung are going to "fix" this.
7. When you have a text message or a missed call, etc you can't just touch the phone and see them listed. You have to unlock it, then swipe down to see a list of texts, etc that you have received. Not a major point really, but still a slight annoyance if you've been away from your phone for a while.
8. The build quality means after a day of use, lots of dust, etc has started to fill in the gaps around the bezel!
9. When I hold the bottom of the phone when using it, the signal drops ala iPhone 4 style! May even take a video of it and put it on youtube. Made me laugh after all the stuff Samsng said about their phones not doing it, but doesn't seem to affect calls.

So in conclusion, despite my 3G being a bag of crap since OS4 was forced upon it to get the latest apps working from the app store, everything just works on the iphone when its not crashing or being slow :D

I'm holding on to the Samsung for another few days to see if it grows on me as the screen is really good and its extremely fast and you don't have to use iTunes, but overall I'm still pondering just going back to a phone that isn't costing me anything at the moment and works for what I need.

I'm not going to get an iPhone 4 as I refuse to give Apple my money, but I think Android really needs the 2.2 update as my mate has a Nexus One which I have used and it seems a lot more functional to be honest. The cut and paste from emails/sms is a shocking limitation. If anyone knows if I'm missing something it could sway me into keeping the phone as I use cut/paste a lot :(

Here's a Google forum relating to the cut/paste options being missing. Seems it is another thing sorted in 2.2 so Samsung need to pull their fingers out! http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=5200

My mate who has flashed to the latest test firmware from the samsung firmware site also says that the "Select text" option is now available. I'm going to flash mine to the JM2 version and see how many of these issues are addressed and report back...

:( doesn't sound great.

Same as you had no interest of changing the 3g for probably several years, unless I broke it.

Might well have to do the forced downgrade.

Had no problems with wifi, connects to my homehub every time without fail...
Dont have to unlock to open new txt msgs? Just drag the puzzle over to the correct slot on the screen and msg opens, whats hard about that??
Can copy txt from both msg's and from the internet broswer... you tried reading the manual ??
Only used the alarm 3 times, but so far, no problem!
As for signal problems when holding near the bottom??? LOL

Flashed the phone to the latest 2.1 firmware but alas the wifi still won't always connect after the phone has been in sleep :( Seems this is a known issue after googling it which is meant to be fixed in 2.2? Also the cut/paste features aren't present but are present in the 2.2 firmware. The unofficial 2.2 firmware at the moment is buggy though (not that the official 2.1 version is bug free lol).

Apparently setting the wifi to never sleep sorts the wifi from sleep issue out so I'll just take the battery hit and see if that sorts it. Think I'm going to end up taking it back this week to be honest and if Samsung get round to releasing the 2.2 update I'll pick it up again then.

The hardware in the phone is amazing so when the software catches up it will be a winner! Played a 720p episode of The Pacific earlier and it was amazingly crisp.

Just checked on my Desire as I've never had to before, but if you go to More, then select text, then yeah, you can copy any text.

As for WiFi, fine here. Even automatically connects to my saved OpenZone spots when in town.

WiFi connects to everything I want it to with no problems at all for me. Never had the signal dropping issue but as with all Samsung phones the signal can be very sensitive at times.

The copy and paste stuff I could do on my G1 and I can also do it on this. I also use SMS pop up which shows me what texts say before I even unlock the phone to reply, quite a handy app.

I'm considering selling my iPod Nano cause the music player is better (only slightly) than my iPod. Yet to try video, though.

Don't have time to try and answer all of your questions but a lot of those problems can be rectified fairly easy. For example the alarm been flaky could be to do with having a task killer or juice defender installed maybe....

Android as a whole is far from perfect but with a little tweaking here and there it can work very well:)

Have a look over at some of the forums and i'm sure you will get answers for a lot of your questions ;)

I have a HTC Magic so might be slightly different:

1. In email, press Menu hardware key> More> Select Text > Highlight text and it'll be copied to clipboard
2. Hold down on text> Copy message text. Copies all of the text message to clipboard
3. Got round this by creating a group in Gmail called Android
4. Trying renaming the alarm
5. Can't help on that one
6. See above
7. For texts, SMS Pop Up app. Must be a app for calls?

Out of interest, is the internal memory on the galaxy s faster/slower than your average class 2 micro sd card?

Just wanted to know which is the better place to store 8gig of music, or does it not matter?

quick question guys.

has anyone had problems using the headphones with the SGS ?. i tried to watch a video using them but i had either no sound when the headphones are in or i get just one channel like background noise but no voices ??. the videos play fine and the sound is fine without the headphones. ive made sure all volumes are up in settings etc.... but still no joy ? dodgy headphones or jack ??

*UPDATE*

Just tried my headphones in a friends ipod and they work fine, so dodgy jack socket....

has anyone taken apart their SGS yet ? i work with electronics and circuit boards everyday so im pretty handy with a soldering iron if it comes to that.

Are you using the headphone that came with the phone? I have had a similar problem with my HTC HD2 and my own headphones - it seems that some headphones dont work (slight different jack size/length or something). Try another set of headphones, I tried 4 sets, 2 worked, 2 didnt.
