Samsung Galaxy S2 vs HTC Sensation

Just loaded up the desktop bbc website on the GS2 in overview mode and holding it at the regular distance that I use it I can't make out the smaller text. And it seems like no amount of extra pixels will actually make it legible cos its so small (considering same screen size). Could be wrong of course, been kinda lazy of late and haven't been to the shops to compare lol.

Kaloer Clock is a better clock/alarm than any other stock alarm clock still, IMO anyway. It has fade in, math problem snooze where you have to solve a math problem at a difficulty level you pre-set in order to snooze/dismiss the alarm and it looks sick.

Thanks for the pointer to this great clock/alarm app....after playing about with all it's settings I completely agree with ya. Bought the power pack too, which adds even more features for princely sum of £1.40

That's what I like about these Android phone apps - even the ones that aren't free are stupid-cheap to buy, and it's a nice way to reward the devs for all the work they put into them, as a lot of them are just 'ordinary' guys working from home - not huge corporations!

As for the 2 phones in question....I've got a HTC Desire with the InsertCoin ROM which I now regard as perfect. It's got Sense 3.0 partially ported with the Ring lock/unlock and various other features and I'm finding it running spot on.

So I'm a big fan of HTC's Sense and I've gotta admit I'd really miss that, BUT....a mate of mine's just gone and got a SG2 after also owning the Desire for a year or so, and he also had doubts about going over to TW4, but he says he's found no probs with it at all and infact finds a lot of the features it has are great!

One of the main things that's holding me back at the mo, is the price of the bally thing - it's just sooooo expensive to buy outright - as I just don't want to get tied into a lengthy contract as I do tend to like to change my phone after a year or so, but £500+ is a bit steep at the minute - especially as I'm liking my Desire so much now!!

I'm usually quite impulsive when buying gizmo's....but I think my head might just be winning this battle with the heart, and I'll wait untill they start to drop in price in a month or three..... :)

It is expensive to buy outright I agree - you have to keep an eye out for the deals though - there was one on contract for £275 over 18 months all in but its expired now.

Played with both today in voda store. Sensation wins for me. Sgs2 didn't feel that thinner, a little bit lighter, nothing amazing, aesthetically looks horrid IMO. Looks like a cheap toy, even the woman agreed with me. Screens a touch brighter/vibrant on the sgs2 but not much IMO. No llag on sennawtiohome screens which people seem to be complaining about... didnt like the tiuchwiz on the Sammy either. Just my thoughts after a 5 min play about.

Yup 5 mins is certainly enough to get to know any phone. There's 2.81mm of difference in thickness as well which is quite a difference in phone thickness terms. There's not much difference between the DHD and Sensation though.

Sorry, not being funny but it just sounded a bit drastic to me that's all. Also I never put any value to what salesmen/women say in stores, they almost never know that much about the products they're selling, often having to look stuff up on the computer to answer customer questions and of course she's going to agree with you. You're showing glowy eyes over a product which could means a sales tally on her end of the month chart.

Delightful.

I think the expression "once you go black, you dont go back" applies to the Sammy lol

Talkin bout the screen, not the hardware. Though black is my favourite colour!

This is so true I always arm myself with information before i go and buy a device and I have found that the sales person knows a lot less about the product than what I do.
I remember going into CPW to see about a new phone, when I asked a question about the phone i already knew the answer the sales person had to check on the gsmarena site lol.

lol I think it has changed now to "once you go black your gona need a wheel chair lol"

i was a big HTC fan, and if the spec's had been identical and it came out at the same time as the SGS2 i would probably have stuck with them. but im very happy with my SGS2. as for touchwizz and sense, i dont like either and will be rooting and romming as soon as a good one comes out.

The ram in this review below would make me think if I was buying the Sensation, with all apps killed in app manager it only has 197mb free with 361 being used by sense and only 558 in total so it does come at a high price

In comparison running TW4 I have 837 total ram and over 500meg free when I clear the apps so this might be something to think about when you got lots of things running and the Sensation running out of ram and going laggy maybe they should have gone too 1gb on this, another thing I have noticed is with live wallpapers the Sensation doesn't look silky smooth like the GS2 is.

not sam again lol :D

I don't really get the free ram thing. If it's free then by definition nothing is using it and nothing needs to. Who cares if I've got 500 or 5 free.
Android suspends apps pretty well when it needs more ram for the current process. I guess it's just a numbers thing.

Don't get me wrong, I think HTC should have put 1GB in and it sucks that Sense uses so much but I don't think it is what will kill the phone.

The locked boot loader will do that :(

I think I might be the only person who doesn't give a toss how thick or heavy my phone is providing it isn't like, an inch :p I love the weighty feel of my milestone, and the SGS I used once (the original) felt like a toy in comparison!

I don't either. However, weight does not equal quality or durability.

The people saying "The SGS2 is light therefore is flimsy/poorly made" are just talking rubbish.

If it only has that amount of ram when it has no apps running it will soon use it up when you have lots of apps running and lots of apps installed meaning the phone will run out of ram fast and get jerky, this is something I found when I had the Optimus X2 with only 512mb ram although the Sensation has more its clear to see Sense sucks it up.

As Robbo says above people talk crap when they say its light so it has poor build quality, its a sturdy phone doesn't creak when twisting and everything fits snug, there is a video of it being thrown off building in a case and the phone works fine so the build quality is obviously there.

You are right - but weight does influence the PERCEPTION of quality and of course its perception that sells products and influences feelings, not reality.

I can certainly see how people might perceive the Samsung is a 'cheaper' feeling handset - its certainly how I felt. I know that, in reality, neither phone is 'cheap' nor is either phone cheaply made. But the Samsung just doesn't feel as substantial.

The levels of fanboyism rapidly developing are hugely comical though. Kaaahn is firmly wearing his Samsung branded underpants outside his trousers on this one, ready to leap in to defend its honour at any point. It's just a phone!

My take on it is that the two best phones on the market right now are the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation. Both are excellent and seperated only by minor differences which really only serve to make it a matter of personal preference.

Play with both, buy the one you like best because the fundamentals on each are as close as makes no difference. Neither phone is the 'worst'.

I agree, I've always felt that the iPhone 4 is the most 'premium' feeling phone for that very reason.

I'm just trying to make it clear that weight does not equal quality/durability, as I said.

Whichever phone you buy out of these two, you aren't getting hard done by.
