Samsung Galaxy S2 vs HTC Sensation

Not trying to add air to the the fanboy fire, but I received my Sensation on Friday and have now exchanged it for an S2.

Extra resolution was nice, but sense was too heavy and clunky in place in my opinion (which removes one of the advantages of the Sensation) so was using Launcher Pro on it. Off angle colours on the Sensation bugged me too much, also the browser isn't as nippy as on the GS2. Whole experience of the GS2 is just nicer once Launcher Pro is on (Touchwiz is still horrible imho).

I just felt after a couple of days use the GS2 offered the better all round experience if your willing to put a little work in and setting up things for yourself.

Even as an HTC lover, I will admit that HTC have gone lazy with this one. Samsung have put in the effort with a fantastic browser with proper GPU acceleration, and have really worked on the interface. The Sensation could have been a better phone; if they cleaned up Sense and worked on optimisation, as well as giving us an unlocked bootloader, it would have all been fine. A real shame, as the hardware is there, and many feel it is better than the Samsung hardware...not going to talk about that, because the reasons are plain to see, though in reality it IS a well built phone, as was the first Galaxy.

If I were buying a smartphone now, as much as I dislike Samsung phones in general, I'd buy the SGS2 over the Sensation in a heartbeat, merely because I CAN get rid of TouchWiz.

What's the point in HTC bringing out a phone which is restricted by its software and slower than my current, older phone...?

Either way, love my DHD...£230 saving, and...in reality, no less of a phone :)

I'd call the DHD quite a bit less of a phone.

Hehe not in the sense of specs, in the sense of what I want my phone to do. Maybe I should have said, "no less of a phone" ;) My phone surfs the web for me, makes calls, allows me to send texts...no different to an SGS2 ;)

Anywho, I think that HTC will learn from this.

Well if that is all you need, the DHD is fine. So you don't care about the battery and don't use the camera then?

Camera, barely ever. In the right conditions, picture quality is fine. Wrong conditions...terrible.

Battery life, sufficient is the word. I can get through an hour and a bit of browsing on the bus in the morning, occasional usage throughout the day, quite a bit of texting, and an hour on the phone on the way back, with around 35% or so left. Idling through the day, it loses around 1% an hour (2G only). So not brilliant, but not inadequate. In all honesty, the reason I have the DHD is the price. I really, really didn't want to get in a contract, and the DHD worked out nearly half the price of the SGS2 for the handset itself (or at best price that isn't available now, £130 cheaper). Personally wouldn't pay the extra cash, as nice a phone it is. It simply wouldn't, and I've witnessed, isn't any faster (running CM7 underclocked at the moment, and would do the same on any other phone).

Next gen dual core for me for sure though.

That said, a mate of mine got an SGS2 today. Minus TouchWiz (which he half killed off by using GoLauncher EX instead), it's a lovely phone!

Argh, really can't decide between. I used to have the galaxy s and it was good.

My dad has just got a wildfire, and I love sense.

It's between sense and its widgets or go launcher etc :s

Also the htc hot spot is damn useful for my iPad on the move.

If you love Sense that much on a Wildfire, you'd probably want to marry it on the Sensation... :o

I'd avoid Sense if I were you. From videos that I have seen (not much to go by), its performance is pretty dire. The hardware between both of these phones is virtually identical; the software, however, brings a world of difference.

You can make a Sense like interface with the aid of some widgets and skins. More work, but with the Sensation, if you find it slow, you are stuck with it (for now, and possibly forever.) With the SGS2, you at least have the choice.

Take a look at the screenshots thread. That will give tou and idea of what you can do, wven if it looks nothing like Sense.

I can't recommend the Galaxy S II highly enough though. I've switched from the iPhone 3GS, and have loved using it for the last few weeks. Great battery life too!
