Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Tablet

Ok, good luck with that. ;)

Oh I know, but I am hereditary ruler of a micro police state and as such I get to make and carry out the rules as I see fit AAAANNNDDD I GET TO SAY WHAT HYPOCRASSY IS

My house my rules, my money my say, I'm a laid back liberal dad but a line has to be drawn and I get to say where and what colour it is.

LOL:D

Did it bring any performance improvements? My 8.9 hasn't got the update yet, but I'm really hoping it does something for the sluggishness of the device. Sometimes it can feel very quick, other times (especially in the browser) it's annoyingly slow.

ICS has sorted out the sometimes sluggish performance that was on HC.

Soo much nicer to use now - and all the new UI upgrades are very nice; i.e. the settings pane.

I find it VERY annoying how there is still a permanent settings bar at the bottom, even during app running... just liek Honeycomb except a darker colour, grr. Is there no way to auto-hide it?

Don't the buttons fade out on yours? On my 8.9 with Honeycomb it fades out in fullscreen apps/games and just has grey dots where the buttons would be.

Not that I know of - how else will you navigate the tab?

Touch the screen (after its gone into full screen in said apps) to bring up the bar again? It wouldn't be a world-first implementation.

Indeed, but it's still visible. Irks me.

Yeah I see - It really doesn't bother me; I like it as it is, having an extra step would probably annoy me more. The fact that the little dots appear on a video is a great touch IMO.

It's up to developers to implement that. They should have what they feel is the best implementation for their app.

Hmmm I like Samsung products but the price of these is insane.

It doesnt matter how good the screen is...the price is crazy for the speed of these when lined up with the Tegra 3 based nexus 7 which is far far more responsive etc.

Is this really worth well over double the price for a better screen and better connectivity? but only half the responsiveness?

I think the price point of the Nexus 7 will be a game changer for tablets in general. Is the Samsung 7.7 worth paying an extra £150 over the N7? Not for me. In fact, seeing as how I'm probably going to order an Acer 10" Tegra 3 tablet for just £100 more than I paid for the N7, I'd say the Samsung is well overpriced.

The Wifi model is worth £300 (though cheapest I've seen is £380) now all day long - Acer screen and build material quality is far far below that of a 7.7.

When you use a 7.7 you can just tell it's a premium product - It's also a bit late buying now it's been out for a while, yet I'd still take one over a n7 anyday.

The responsiveness of this thing is fine now it has ICS - HC was a bit laggy I agree. Watch HD content on this screen is worth the price tag alone.

Correct, this thing is now overpriced in every way except "perceived value" to people who really like it. Don't get me wrong, I love it, the screen is ace and the build quality awesome... but the insides are going to be dated very soon, and the extreme lateness of both the launch, and the eventual upgrade to ICS, mean that I have not been able to really enjoy this tablet as I should have for about 90% of the time I have owned it. It isn't worth the purchase price for the stage it was sold at, and the ICS upgrade was criminally late. No, all in all, this tablet was not really worth the high premium.

The hardware in tablet will be fine for a while yet - what games have you come across that it can't play? (I'm really not into gaming on a tab).

Other than gaming - the 7.7 will do everything very nicely for a long while yet. Samsung's ICS ROM is a peach - fast, smooth and with great features over stock ICS.

The hardware still suffers from the odd stutters and lag with lots going on... i'm not talking as much about the GPU as about the CPU. My Samsung SGS III is noticeably faster in every respect and is only a notch down resolution-wise. This tablet will age quite quickly now imo, especially when compared to the releases due at the end of this year/early next year with the A15 cores. Am I happy I bought a tablet based on 2 year old tech that I will have been able to use as intended for only 6 months before the A15-based tablets arrive and make it look like a dinosaur? Not especially, and I will probably look to sell in a month or two to get the best price for it that I can so I can upgrade it when the new gen comes out.

Fair do's - for my uses which is just casual stuff like web browsing and youtube etc - there's nothing out there now or the near future the will top the 7.7 imo.

Only the successor to the 7.7 will tempt me, which is a good 4-5 months away.

Whille the tab was on HC, i was tempted to sell it and try out different tablets but there was nothing in the 7inch form factor that tempted me away.

I will not upgrade to a newer version, i dont game at all and most of my usage is watching tv, films and reading books, because i dont see how the newer version is going to benefit me.

Battery life on ICS is wonderful, 16/17 hours while reading a book, 11 hours on video and playing music, i think a couple of days.

There are little hiccups/lags in performance but these are hardly noticible and if im ever worried about performance then i'll flash CM9.

I do think the price needs changing, maybe £250 for the wifi and £300 for the 3g, but the build quailty and materials used justify the premium over the Nexus 7 tablet.
