Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Tablet

Just to report in that my kids HK sourced 7.7's have updated to ICS ota while they are away, only Wales so not a location thing imho, so no long wait or need to root for the HK sourced reasonably priced 7.7's.

The hardware still suffers from the odd stutters and lag with lots going on... i'm not talking as much about the GPU as about the CPU. My Samsung SGS III is noticeably faster in every respect and is only a notch down resolution-wise. This tablet will age quite quickly now imo, especially when compared to the releases due at the end of this year/early next year with the A15 cores. Am I happy I bought a tablet based on 2 year old tech that I will have been able to use as intended for only 6 months before the A15-based tablets arrive and make it look like a dinosaur? Not especially, and I will probably look to sell in a month or two to get the best price for it that I can so I can upgrade it when the new gen comes out.

Well it depends what you need extra cpu speeds for,to make the overall experience smooth everyone will agree with, but as people have said the 7.7 with ics is nice and smooth with minimal sluggishness.

I have just sold my nexus 7 (i was going to return it to google but didn't want to bother with sending it and then waiting who knows how long to get a refund),and i will say some of the things that annoyed me about the nexus 7 enough for me to sell it and thing to own a different tablet.

The first thing that bothered me was just the general build quality was not great and if you pressed with medium force on certain parts of the screen (this was for my model anyway) it would depress and squeeze,i mean i really liked the soft leather effect back of the nexus 7 and it feels great to hold, but i really didn't like how it would squeak and depress.

The second issue is that the nexus 7 gets too warm for my liking at certain parts of the back of the device (i presume where the tegra 3 chip is stored),ok it has 4 cores and offers a smooth experience (although i think that is mostly down to the software android 4.1 than actually having 4 cores, as next to no apps actually utilize 4 cores except benchmark apps, but i don't spend all day playing with them) it just becomes noticeable and annoying when holding it.

So those are really the two biggest problems i had with the nexus 7,for what i plan to use a tablet for, which is mainly ebook reading (and listening via text to speech which is a must for me and android's TTS apps blow away what any other tablet os can offer) and watching hd video and the like, this is the best tablet to do those do things.

I've really started to go off games altogether so that aspect is not a main point in my buying decision for a new tablet, but even saying that tegra 3's graphical improvements over non tegra devices is minimal at best.

Anyway all in all i defiantly see other people including myself who would look for a premium tablet that satisfy's there needs for what they exactly want from there tablet experience.

I have also looked at the ipad 3 seeing as it's in the same price range but when i argue portability and the quality of the 7.7 screen for HD video it beats the ipad 3 which doesn't even play hd video in full screen resolution and has the same viewing space as the 7.7 because it has about 1 inch black bars on both the top and bottom, where as the 7.7 is full screen native resolution.

When are you getting one haroon? There's one for sale in the MM for £280.

Sorry i don't understand what MM is suppose to be?

I plan to get one within next few weeks,it took me awhile to sell my nexus 7 but finally did recently.

280 is a very nice price but will be snapped up soon before i am ready to put down the money yet.

Just did a minor software update via the tab OTA - went from LPK to LPL...new kernal version too.

Fixed my GPS issue - i.e. lack of GPS lock on first ICS update.

Can't believe the 7.7 has had two updates and the 8.9 hasn't even had one yet! Still waiting for ICS...trust me to buy the Tab that's seemingly the least important to Samsung. :(

I really have't got a clue why the 8.9 hasn't got the ICS update yet - it's exactly the same hardware as the 10.1 - really can't be long now till you get it Voice.

A few people over on XDA have managed to get the 10.1 version installed on the 8.9 with just a couple of modifications. It's tempting, but really I'd rather just wait for the proper release. Although every passing day is making me reconsider that!

Looks like this thread has died a death!?!?!

Does anyone have any further information of whether the 7.7 will be getting Jelly Bean??

I got my dad a tab 2 7" for Christmas and the first thing it did was update to JB - got home to update my (more expensive) 7.7 and......nothing!

I've done a bit of searching around and it appears that the 7.7 isn't on the list of Samsung devices that will be getting the update!?!?!

Does anyone know any better?? *crosses fingers*

Samsung aren't providing an official Jelly Bean.

The only way is via rooting and unofficial ROMs, check the 7.7 section on XDA. :)

When my dad's Tab 2 7" upgraded to JB it made it a lot nicer to use imo!

ICS is a massive step up from HC, and even though JB is better, it isn't so much so to outweigh how much better SAMOLED is over PLS screens (imo).

I don't feel that running ICS hamstrings my tablet in any way, it's more down to the perception of missing out on things by not have the latest version, even if the differences aren't that much.

The hardware is starting to feel a little old though vs the recent quad cores. I still get a lot more lag than my Samsung Galaxy SIII. However, considering the hardware is effectively 2 years old, I guess that's no surprise.
