Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

Absolutely incredible with movies. Definitely the standout feature of the 21:9 form factor.

Agreed: the LG 34's I had were really good for movies (apart from the BLB). Previously, I would stream movies to my TV and watch them from my lounge, but these 21:9's give the impression of being at the cinema, such is the field of view. You'll need some high quality content to do it justice however.

Have ordered the Samsung and it should be arriving tomorrow; over the weekend I'll post up my impressions of it.

Edit: ouch! Looks like the Dell's been pulled: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=27623917#post27623917

First time poster here and just wanted to say that my sammy arrived this morning and its a keeper. Moving from a 27" Dell and perhaps thats why the Samsung didnt seem that big as i pulled it out the box. Build quality feels good, very solid but then at this price it ought to be.

15 minutes later and we're up and running. Dialled down the brightness settings as others have advised and alls good. Very crisp text and no issues that i can see, cloudiness or otherwise. Colours are vibrant, no way they could be described as washed out. My passion is flight simulation and Prepar3d in particular and the super wide view really adds to the immersion. The increase in pixel width from 2560 to 3440 has had no impact on frame rates thankfully and my new 970 seems to cope well with the higher resolution.

Ive only been able to try it out for a couple of hours but i find I'm sitting quite close to the screen. The curve is less apparent than I expected and very subtle in use. I think I'd be bothered if it was a flat screen 34"er as somehow the curve does help to surround you, I am drawn in to the image.

So to summarise I'm very happy with my purchase. Yes its expensive at the moment but lifes short!

I'd be very interested to hear how you get on with this monitor and p3d, what kind of settings and addons are you using?
I've recently got a 970 and this monitor is next on my wanted list.

Happy to share in due course but Sammy arrival has coincided with p3d 2.5 which has broken Orbx scenery so will have to wait for them to release new libs or whatever before I can reinstall and give it a good workout. Looks great with vanilla p3d 2.5 but that's no guide to what things will be like once I start installing add-ons.

@Global_Inferno - if you could perhaps post up your profile somewhere, that'd be great for comparison's sake (I know, each monitor will vary somewhat). Also, please indicate your brightness/contrast/gamma and colour settings for reference. Many thanks.

  • Sitting in front of mine - whoa... the curve takes getting used to. Right off the bat, the LG did have more punch to the colours out of the box. Will have to do a fair bit of fiddling on the Samsung to get it right.

  • Some images here. Can't create an album for some reason. Box was huge!

  • A few more. No BLB (mobile photo -exaggerates this hugely). One odd thing however: on a certain grey background (see pic), there is a very subtle banding present (again - photo exaggerates this wildly). I can't replicate it with any other colours. Will see if it persists. Barring this, I'm very impressed by this monitor - no bleed/glow is a worthy tradeoff against IPS in my opinion (with these current 3440 panels).

  • Just tried a few games and the response is quick with no ghosting present. I'll post up my thoughts over the weekend, but I think for now they would be solely just backing up other reviewer's opinions here.

One thing that videos and photos never get across is just how wide these things are - for instance: keyboards in the foreground always seem to make them look smaller than the 0.8m width that they are in RL :)

Agree with you on the bezels there: the rear of the monitor is gorgeous with it's brushed metal finish - the front doesn't quite live up to the back. Having said that, it's unobtrusive with nice clean lines.

Yeah - that price was amazing - gone now alas.

No clouding on mine and I'm sure Skarpanis would've mentioned it if he had that problem too.

The curve is growing on me, however if I had the option of a flat version of this monitor, I would've gone for it. It'll definitely take time to get used to the curve, no doubt about that. Put it this way: everywhere in the world we're used to seeing flat images - this is edging ever so slightly towards 'Minority Report' territory. It's not intrusive however - my brain just needs to rewire itself ever so slightly, and I may just end up rather liking it.
