Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

Well my video will have clips from running HDMI @50Hz and DisplayPort 1.2 @60Hz. You can make your own mind up then.

Personally, I hadn't noticed any difference (as yet) although I hadn't been looking explicitly for differences between the two. And it's certainly true that while I've done video tests on the HDMI, I haven't done (and probably won't) do any gaming (as it's my MacBook).

Where is your video?

Well my replacement came today and happy to report that there's no faults :)
I'm definitely fixed on getting a calibrator though just undecided as to what model yet. I won't really be able to give much impressions as of yet, still need to get my H220 and R9 290 back in my rig. I did give Insurgency a quick whirl around and didn't notice much ghosting though couldn't really be certain given that I couldn't really run it at native resolution at decent frames.

I have some good news and some not so good news to report...

The video review is now LIVE on YouTube, just give it 10mins or so to ramp up in quality before viewing. http://youtu.be/KuUjqhXcR4k

The bad news? Well it turns out that recording a monitor is really, really, really hard without focus-issues, artifacts, etc. So apologies for the quality.

Here's the video info, for those that can't watch just yet:

"Welcome to my video review of the Samsung LS34E790C 34" Curved Ultra-Wide Monitor.

Firstly, let me apologise for the generally potato-quality video in this review, it's not great, I know, but it turns out that filming a screen is really, really, really tricky to get right! If anyone has any tips, please feel free to let me know.

This is part of a new breed of monitors that have been coming out recently, featuring a 21:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 3440x1440.

The extra width makes it perfect for watching "cinemascope" shot movies, as you'll get a full-screen, ultra-wide image, just like you'd get at the cinema.

The screen is also brilliant for gaming, giving a much more immersive feel to gameplay as it really does fill your field of vision perfectly and with a 4ms GTG response time, it's pretty darn quick to update, leaving little in the way of ghosting or blurring.

The stand is solid, and allows a decent range of height and tilt adjustment.

The inputs will cater for almost everyones needs, with a DisplayPort 1.2 @60Hz and two HDMIs at 50Hz.

The only reason that this monitor didn't get a 10/10 was because of it's lower than 120/144Hz refresh rate, a slight issue with the stand (left to right lean) and finally, it would have been nice to see a second DisplayPort input rather than the additional HDMI, giving two 60Hz inputs instead of one.

For those that want to see the more technical details of the monitor, take a look at Samsung's own page: http://www.samsung.com/levant/consumer/computers-peripherals/monitors/led-monitor/LS34E790CNS/ZN

If you enjoyed watching the video, please like and/or share it! :D

Oh and HUUUUUUGE shoutout to MetroGnome, whose music I've shamefully used throughout the video, please, check him out: https://www.youtube.com/user/itsMetroGnome"

Good review, I think you've done a great job there tbh.

I agree with your summation too... for me this would be a must buy if it had a faster panel. At this price though, I can't justify it to myself. Always a price to be paid for cutting edge though, and this is the only monitor of its type. Certainly seems to be a better option than the LG IPS panels with all their BLB and glow issues anyway!

Hey Global notice any clouding on yours? Unfortunately it seems I have two patches near the top right and top left of the screen :/ Hoping these will go away with time as the display settles, I've read that you can lessen the effect by messaging the affected areas, but don't want to do that just yet.

@Global - btw if you do a Youtube search for "Samsung S34E790C" (It's the far more common name for it) it will yield a lot of results. Somehow, "Samsung LS34E790C" (which is it's correct name) only gives two :)

Samsung's preferred monitor model designations always start with an 'S' these days ('T' for hybrids). Their full designation for this model can be as ridiculous as 'LS34E790CNS/EN'. S34E790C is the preferred shorthand for that and it is referred to as the 'SE790' as well. If there were more models in this series, which there may be later, they would be members of the 'SE790' series.

Thanks for the clarification PCM2, something tells me that your review will be much more "technical" than mine, lol. But it was just to give some people an idea of what to expect, and I think it does that... *just*

If only I could figure out how to achieve a slightly crisper video with less distortion, I might be tempted to re-do it. This weekend I'm bringing in the big guns, £4k's worth of camera, to see if it can keep up. :/

I'm alright with the writing, but I certainly wouldn't claim to be the best photographer/movie editor in the world. ;) It will be interesting to see what that camera can produce. :)

If you're just using this monitor for personal use and not professional - is it really necessary to calibrate it - is close enough good enough? I suppose you could buy one off of Ebay, use it then sell it again.

Interesting to note that the list price of the Samsung (on their site) is £799.

I think they taking advantage of not many places having this for sale and ramping up the price, supply and demand and all that!

the music is a little too loud for me buddy, couldnt pick up on your commentary at some points in the video, otherwise a great review and insight for those who are on the fence.
