Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

pcm2 would I be right in thinking after a while say 200hrs use, would the screen be burnt in so to speak and settings will probably look a bit different

Finally getting my LG monitor picked up by OCUK tomorrow. Its been with LG for 4 weeks and I just got it back. Very happy to finally be getting my refund and definatly not buying LG anymore.
No idea what to get now though. I have to have ultrawide as there so much better than 16:9 but not really feeling happy about curved screens or the huge price your paying for something pointless. Lets be honest the curved thing is going to last about aslong as 3D did. The majority of people like flat screens that they can mount flush against the wall and they just look nicer in my eyes. We need more options!

Hmmm while that is an awesome price... why is it cheaper than 34 inch lower res screens I do not know? im not sure I could go back to anything that isn't ultrawide.

Tell me about it. I keep looking at monitors and can't decide! This Samsung 34" is looking like the best bet by far at the moment though. It's just the lack of official reviews that's putting me off at the moment though the user reviews have generally been very positive.

Like yourself I want a 21:9 monitor but I'm not quite sure about the curve. Problem is the only flat 34" 21:9's all use LG's panel which by all accounts is a nightmare when it comes to backlight bleed. That and most users suggest the curve is fairly mild plus they generally agree that the curved screen is generally less prone to bleed than the flat variant which is why I'm erring towards it.

The diodes and phosphors of the backlight degrades, so you can expect a slight drop in luminance and a shift in colour temperature (colour balance). As above, though, you have to assess each unit individually when it comes to colour balance and indeed over time as well.

Well, it's still wide :D even wider than the 34", way taller too, so you should feel at least as much freedom as with the LG. The price indeed isn't bad, especially considering the fact that it's the only (60Hz, and overclockable on lower res) option for that size.

only worry how long will last va panel...

The curve now looks completely natural to me: my brain's adjusted and I think it works very well (unlike for for TV's, which is plain daft).

I'm struggling to get reds looking right though - they are too intense, or just seem off somehow. Having to buy a hardware calibrator really shouldn't be something people absolutely have to splash out on to get the colours right.

@global - funny, but your calibrated profile just doesn't look right on my monitor at all. I suppose I'll have to get a Spyder after all..... grrr.

Got to say this monitor produces very crisp images indeed, often jawdropping. The blacks are almost too black sometimes (as somebody said above). And there exists some banding in blocks of finely gradated colour on some webpages. It's not perfect, no way; I just think IPS is a better all rounder at the end of the day. It's just a different technology (been using IPS for years) and it's taking me some time to get used it.

Keep repeating though: no back light bleed :)

proberly as long as any monitor, i had the hyundai 24" pva years ago that i handed down to my nepthew and its still going strong, my thinking is after say 200 hrs use the screen will be burnt in and then need a final calibration, but then i could be talking rubbish

yep me too, intrested to see what badass and pcm2 make of it

Really? That is good news: pcmonitors.info and TFTCentral (same outfit?) are very good sites (just checked their sigs). I'd trust their opinion more than your average review site any day.

Anybody know a good software method to calibrate monitors? I really like this monitor btw - if I could calibrate the thing properly then I'd be very happy, bar a few issues; and I don't think they are bad by any means. [Edit: just farted around with the RGB values and I think It's a lot better. Still not perfect, but at least some colours aren't searing my retinas out anymore].

I'll post up my strictly amateur review in the next few days.

well badass does tftcentral and pcm2 does pcmonitors.org, when tftcental do a review they do a calibration and make the icc profile available , ive used them in the past and there pretty much spot on, pcm2 helped me out with some pretty good settings also when i had my samsung s27a750d.
infairness global inferno has done a good job with his icc profile. i also noticed when i loaded the drivers from the disc it installed a samsung icc profile but not tried it yet

The LG -- out of the box: it was perfect. All you had to do was adjust your brightness to suit and you were away. Calibrating on your own is flawed - we all know this. Why can't manufacturers do this all the time - and especially on their expensive units?

That's not always the case mind. Some of their PLS models have really good out of the box setup. Their TN and VA models always need more tweaking. On almost all of their models I tend to find that the default gamma mode is sub-optimal. Nice that they give you the option to change that, but some users don't know to do that. I wish they'd hurry up with that review sample! :(

Are there any professional reviews around for this yet? cant seem to find any which is strange since its been out a while and they usually come out pretty quick.

Given that this is the first actual new panel (unlike the Dell) I would have though reviewers would have been all over this!

Any prediction on panel price drop after the Acer ships?
