Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

Is that a serious question?! :p It is on the PC, consoles don't support such an aspect ratio or resolution.

The game looks rather nice on the '4K' monitor I'm testing at the moment as well, but that FOV makes it rather glorious on your UltraWide, Matson. :)

Lol I wasn't sure if it was or not, sod that no pc for me!

Bit quite in here lately!

You all still enjoying your screens?

Looks like this might be back on my radar if the asus ips freesync screen turns out to be anything like the acer gsync ips screen....

@PCM2 or anyone who has had the lg/dell 21.9 screens.

just how much better is the motion clarity, is it noticeably better?

I just wish this screen was a fair bit cheaper too, can't help but feel Samsung are over charging by quite a bit as the 29" 2560x1080 screen is £500 yet the IPS equivalents are about £250-300........

I'm mostly happy, 60hz is probably my only gripe. Everything else is good or very good. Blacks, as it has been said many times before, are far better than ips panels. Having said that, I would've liked a better contrast ratio, I'm getting 2100:1 after calibrating. A bit off the claimed 3000:1.

Overall though, I would say 8/10 with my particular screen. Price should be lower, VA 21:9 panels are rather pricey.

60HZ doesn't really bother me tbh, when I can get a constant 60 fps with vsync on, I find gaming to be very smooth, my main concern is just the motion clarity, I think the measured value for response time of my 29um65 is about 7/8ms.

And yeah, it is a shame that the contrast ratio isn't between 3000 and 4000, still as you said, a lot better than IPS and TN and pretty much guaranteed to not have any bleeding issues.

In all honesty 60hz is enough for most things, I just wish that it would display other refresh rates without judder. 50hz is a bit of a stuttering mess on this panel, but I don't think that would bother most people.

I don't suppose anyone has read up on that upcoming BenQ 35" VA curved monitor? I would be very interested but the resolution of 2560x1080 is a shame.

3 things that I am extremely sensitive to (more so in the last year :():

- stutter
- screen tearing
- motion blur

That is why I really wish a (good) manufacturer would bring a 34" 1440 with free or g sync screen out for <£700, at least 2 of my problems would be a non-issue then.

I will just wait to see how this asus screen turns out and if it fails then I think my decision will be between this and the benq 144hz freesync screen (although only when/if it drops to £400, no way should it be £500 when the asus IPS version costs £500 as well....)

Not going to happen for a while, and not at that price I don't think.

I'm really uber chuffed with mine - also the black 'crush' seems to have subdued itself a fair bit from when it was new. PCM2 will probably tell you that you're just getting used to it, but I'm damned sure it's nowhere as pronounced as it was before. I set up my old IPS monitor for a quick check whilst rearranging my workspace and sure enough, the difference was much less noticeable.

Edit: got to add.. the speaker(s)? are excellent for monitor speakers.

Yeah I agree, it is going to be a long wait for that monitor! :( It really all depends on how good the asus screen is and price drops,if any.....

Monitor speakers?! PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT! :p

Monitor speakers?! PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT! :p

You know. I used to be like that as well. And indeed I do use and recommend a decent standalone set. But increasingly I find myself using headphones primarily which must be connected directly to my sound card for optimal quality. Rather than disconnecting them and connecting up my speakers, I often find myself using the integrated monitor speakers. So I do appreciate a decent set of integrated speakers such as those on the Samsung. I hate it when I'm reviewing a monitor without them or with a rubbish pair. Laziness prevails! :D

hehe lazy son of a bitch :p :D

I can't get on with headphones, they just don't feel right :o

Not sure what soundcard you got but I think with the asus ones (at least the essence STX cards anyway), you can switch between headphones and speakers rather quickly and easily:

Or, you could go to windows playback devices (right click on the sound icon in the taskbar) and just enable/disable the audio devices.

Bit more faff required though :p

BTW, could you recommend a good image/software to use for calibrating the gamma manually/using my eyes. I tried the lagom one but I find it impossible to tell if the bars are the same shade :o

I have a Xonar D2X. But switching the sound source doesn't help switch between headphones or speakers if they both need to connect to the same place for optimal quality (i.e. the soundcard). You still need to physically disconnect and connect. That is the advantage of using integrated monitor speakers if you have a decent pair - leave your headphones connected to the soundcard where they work best and switch to the monitor for 'sound out loud' :).

There is no 'good' way to 'calibrate' by eye nor do I deem it necessary for this monitor. Lagom can help at a basic level, as can familiar images. You are never going to be able to accurately assess gamma 'by eye' on a monitor like this where perceived gamma has a moderate dependency on viewing angle, you'd need a colorimeter for that. Or just use 'Gamma3' and be done with it.

Ah I see, I haven't got headphones myself so unable to test that out.

Ok thanks and yeah I do want a colorimeter but not really wanting to spend £100+ on one, at least not yet anyway.... That question was more for my 29um65 though :p I have left the default monitor gamma OSD setting at default and I'm just tweaking the setting via AMD CCC.

intresting what you said about black crush, im sure the picture quality on mine is better now than when it was new, mabe this screen needs a bit of burn in time

The speakers are pretty decent for this monitor but external speakers all the way of course! sound is just as important as visuals. I don't really like using headphones myself as I like to hear whats going on in the world around lol. The quality of my Equator studio monitors is amazing though and well worth the price.
The monitor itself is amazing. The only downside for me is text. It seems to mess up my eyes a little and make them more tired than usual. I never noticed that with my LG IPS or old TN panel but I do with this one. I did the clear type thing but I still seem to get eye fatigue easier on this.

For anyone that is looking to buy this weekend, it is entirely possible that the manufacturer could be offering a discount if you order direct from them and use the right code. Entirely possible.

Picked one of these up the other day as well as the new Spyder 5 Elite to calibrate it. Very happy with it but the resolution definitely highlights the lack of VRAM on my 780ti SLI setup. Shame there's so few Titan X's in stock over here currently, so will be waiting a bit for those.

My only issue, and I remember this coming up in this thread at some point - does anyone know how to fix the fact that all my windows lose their positions after the monitor comes back on from standby?

Does anyone else seem to get more eye fatigue with this screen than other screens?

I didn't really get any on the IPS screens I had and I don't with my HDTV but when I look at this screen after a while it starts to hurt my eyes.
