Samsung U28D590 mini review

I so want to click buy on this :(
But 4k G sync just around the corner!

Hopefully i'm wrong but I think it'll be a big old corner! G-Sync has hardly appeared on normal monitors yet. And if the Asus ROG 1440p g-sync is anything to go by I wouldn't get too excited just yet.

Cheers Greg proper excited about chucking some games at it tomorrow

You won't look back, maybe closer to the screen to read things but deffo not back :D

I will prolly grab a 4K G-Sync model when they are out as well. I am still tempted by the ROG Swift but funds are so tight at the mo, it wouldn't be for some time.

Or hold off until July for the swift!

If the 4K G-Sync was out, I would have grabbed that and prior to buying my Sammy 4K, I would have got the swift G-Sync if that had been out but having got the Sammy, I am very happy but part of me still wants to try G-Sync to see what the fuss is about....

In a nutshell, you are on your own :D

Anyone know how this plays with Windows 7, does it scale the text and windows or is everything tiny?

I am on Windows 7 still and tex is a non issue, as I selected 150% bigger in the CP but as for some apps (like afterburner), they are small and the text is small, so hard to read and I have to get close.

I am sure there will be things coming to suit 4K users, or you could even just run the desktop at a smaller res if it was bad and game at 4K if you wanted.

Mine just arrived, Chrome looks awful on it.. is there anyway to get sharp text on a browser without it looking naf?? Ideas please

Will do a full review soon, off the bat. Yes its no IPS. Compared to my apple Thunderbolt displays the colours do no pop as much. However... the 4k experience is unbelievable. I had a quick go on AC4, Watchdogs and Wolfenstein, and all look markedly different on this beaut. There has been a lot of talk about 4k being too small at 28", let me dismiss this myth for you. Sat at around 20" from the monitor, it is truly stunning to watch. No dead pixels found yet. Will report back in full soon :D

@waspy88

As the panel is not an RGB pixel layout you will need to re-calibrate windows clear type to make text better. Using internet explorer at 150% font size browsing the internet looks nice, unfortunately chrome does not scale as far as i know. I am windows 7 by the way.

Very nice reviews guys, thanks for putting in the time and the effort.

There are a few things bothering me though. No Vesa mounts for a start and the small text size. I am using windows 8.1.

Just a question to you both. I currently have a Samsung SA700D, It's a 23inch 120Hz monitor. Would either of you change up to the Samsung 4K monitor if you had the choice? Like I mean with what you know now and you had to choose would you pick the 120Hz monitor or the U28D590?

I am in a position where I can get one of these for around £325.

@melmac

To be honest i am not fussed about higher hz monitors and 1080p i am not bothered by 60hz motion blur as long as response times are decent. I can even tolerate 30fps for extra eye candy. 23" 1080p is not too bad i guess compared to 27" 1080p. In fact 20" 1080p has the same PPI as 27" 1440p so 23" is a decent middle ground.
It is personal choice i guess whether you can stand certain things like smaller screens, motion blur, input lag and the type of games you play and type of gamer you are.
I could never game on a 23" i tried it's too small. 27-28" is just right for me and my desk. 1440p is still excellent compared to 4k especially with a good monitor but 4k makes no AA workable on some games and reaching 30fps and beyond is reachable which works for me. One thing i would not go back to is 27" 1080p higher hz or not it looks like crap compared to 1440p never mind 4k. 1440p still looks good with some higher AA.
I think getting higher hz and more fps is harder than higher resolutions so it's your personal priorities which to aim for. On my rig on tomb raider 2013 i can't even hit 100fps on a certain area say at 1080p so i get judder or tearing and it looks low res (plus i can't see the point of aiming for it as it only decreases motion blur a bit and makes aiming a bit smoother which if that is your thing then fine) on 1440p same bit i can do locked 60fps and it look high res and smooth. At 4k i can get above 30fps with judder or locked 30fps with no judder and even higher image fidelity. My personal preferences are the latter two options for better image. I may of said 1440p but the quality of the samsung TN panel is high enough that i am happy to choose 4k with 30fps or above with high fidelity and good picture quality.
One other factor for me is that my CPU is going to start holding me back anyway like in crysis 3 as it is only 4core so i can never hit 60fps on that game on the grassy parts as my cpu struggles more with the physics. By taxing the gpu more to get 30fps say it would bring it in line more with the cpu bottleneck on areas that tax the CPU on future games and hold fps back at lower resolutions. I am a graphics whore myself and so that's my preference and no regrets on the sammy.
These are my thoughts hope it helps your choice. Although if your like me then only 1st hand experience can tell you what is suitable for your gaming expectations. I need to stop buying monitors now it's getting silly, i think i have a new addiction!
