** SAMSUNG: WARP SPEED CAPTAIN, ENGAGE!!!! **

So for those of us with PCI-E 2.0 x2 lanes to there M.2 slots (e.g. z97 gene VII) there's not too much advantage over SATA 3? 8Gb/s vs 6Gb/s

i have an asrock extreme 6 with m.2 ultra port and m.2 normal sata port, i assume this will be for that and be very very fast?

So this limits you to x8 on your gfx slot (x4 on 2nd gfx slot)?

The one on offer at the moment is the AHCI version (Well I believe), but there is also a slightly newer NVMe version apparently available.

looks like there is a windows driver issue on the NVme version, and the difference in performance i dont think has been reviewed as massive, so AHCI may be the way to go for now...

Wanted to share my experience with these now, bought a 512GB version and am loving it! Windows install was easy and is super fast, can't even go downstairs to get a drink now as it's too fast!

Here is the performance test from Samsung Magician:

so what practical speed comparisons can you make eg b4 (what was before?) and after..eg os? boot time, any other examples where the hdd was limiting factor?

To compare, I was using a 120GB Kingston HyperX SSD with 550MB/s Read and I think 500MB/s write.

Used Windows 8.1 on both and for me the new Samsung drive is much much faster! I can't really give you timings, I never did any tests however now after the Asus boot logo I get, my screen flashes off for a second and then i'm straight in to the desktop. Before on my Kingston I did have a few seconds of wait time on the windows loading screen.

I have installed all of my programs on the new drive too, Waterfox, Chrome, Steam etc and all are noticeably faster at booting up and just general browsing although I am limited by ADSL2+ broadband.

I also installed a few games on it, GTA V and BF4 being two of my main ones and they are both noticeably faster to load too. I seem to be the only one in a BF4 server for a bit at the start of matches so I think it's a little too quick! :D GTA V is faster than on my old OCZ Vertex SSD, but is still longer than I was hoping, but I think that is just a limitation of the game itself. I created a separate partition just for 'Games' so that is why in my benchmarks you can see slightly smaller size of the drives.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't have any issues installing windows at all. A lot of people advise to disconnect all SATA drives and all non essential USB devices before installing. I tried without doing that and didnt have any issues.

I followed a video called 'How to Install Windows on an M.2 SSD SM951 or XP941' on youtube just to be sure and there was a section there with a couple of settings to tweak in the bios (It just so happened his motherboard was the same as mine), but i hadn't tried installing before this guide so not sure if it made a difference or not.

All in all, very impressed with the drive and I am more than happy with this AHCI version and wouldn't feel annoyed if an NVMe version were to come out soon. It is by far the fastest drive I have ever had!

EDIT - Another benchmark test:

Do not take my word on this!
Samsung just informed me not to worry as the AHCI models will be upgradable to NVME via a driver update. :)

How much certainty would OCUK be able to place on that?..Might help a little to get that 100%.

It would fit somewhat with what some review sites reported as a last minute change of spec for the SM951 from NVME to AHCI, maybe the controllers are not different at a hardware level, and Samsung on the OEM Sales Side just calculated that there would be too much headache/support questions with NVME in the current average ecosystem? just musing out loud.....

impressive indeed...for M.2 Motherboard owners, seems a slam dunk as a boot drive for the luxury market at least (over twice £/GB than SATA but over twice as quick too).

I need every sata port i can get for storage..so i can probably talk myself into it...

Can anyone answer my previous question regarding my msi z97m and what speed I should expect from this and what effect it will have on my video card lane?

thought by your username there would be some juicy new info...:-(

have you looked up on the manufacturers web how the m.2 pci lanes affect...other manufacturers do specify? but even if the gpu did drop to 8 lanes, even a titan x is only affected in region of 5% i believe...main thing as you say is the m.2 pcie lane quantity and version for this ssd.

These drives make me really want to have one, ugh, 2100 mb instead of 500ish sequential, and 60 mb 4k read, omg, I want!!!!

A 256GB SM951 on my X99 (Asrock X99M Killer Fatal1ty Killer) with an 'Ultra' M.2 slot.

Windows 8 new install, hardly any drivers, no tweaks, first time the drive was used.
