Schumacher to Mercedes GP?

Sorry if reposted, but absolutely love the Sniffpetrol series, along with this beauty (there's always one at the bottom of each publication, not that there's been many this year - shame!)

Maybe I am just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt this time round, but at his age in all seriousness I think he can't demand or expect the same treatment he had in his glory days.

He can demand whatever he wants. Mercedes were absolutely desperate to have an all German team and they wanted a talisman, immediately. MS was the obvious choice. In fact, he was the only choice.

For financial reasons, MS is the perfect candidate and will bring more money and attention to the team than Button ever could. Simply having Michael Schumacher in a dark shirt, with the Mercedes logo on his chest is something Mercedes would've paid millions for.

Its quite possible that Mercedes had made it clear to Ross Brawn that they wanted (or were considering) MS. This is why they weren't worried about tying up a deal with the 2009 World Champ - offer Button a cut price deal...if he signs, great, if not, we have MS as our preferred option, waiting in the wings.

The thing is they didn't offer button a cut price deal and the bitterness after Button signed for Mclaren doesn't suggest to me they had MS as a preferred option.

Its a great option to now have but I don't think it was anything like a preferred option, more the only real option.

Wasn't the reason why Button didnt accept/sign a deal earlier with BrawnGP, due to the financial package on offer?

From what little I know, they were negotiating a contract for 2010, but money was the big stumbling block.

No, Brawn offered jenson more than mclaren, but he still went to mclaren.

Do we know how much Brawn offered and how much McLaren are paying him?

Also, could one of the reasons for Button's move be due to MS's imminent arrival? Would Button have known about Mercedes' plan, when he was making his decision?

Well that would be telling ;).

To be honest i think it is partly the thrill of the race, partly because i didnt quite get on with 2 wheels, but mostly because i wanted to show all these young up-starts how to race properly :) ;)

But what if, you are the one who gets shown up? What if you struggle to even beat your team-mate?

Rosberg was already signed, Brawn himself has said many times money was never an issue and they offered a better package than Mclaren. Its rumoured brawn offered nearly 12 million and Mclaren are paying around 8.

So then why wasnt Button signed up by BrawnGP earlier - perhaps before he won the title or even a few days later? What was the hold up?

The hold up I'm sure was mercedes. Brawn didn't have the money until Mercedes commited, so they were offereing 3 million plus sponsorship deals.

I also think the 2nd half of the year and lack of resources was enough to show button they couldn't compete over a season.

Where on the other hand you had Mclaren turn up with a dog and without testing end the season with possibly the best car. I think that was a big wake up for jenson.

Dont get me wrong, mercedes will be a big player but it will take years to again build up to the sort of numbers to compete regularly with a ferrari or macca. Jenson will know how lucky he was with this years car and how much of his career he wasted in poor teams.

Hmmm think your a little off the mark here in a few respects. Mercades will be a big player yes, however I don't think it will "take years" to build up any sort of numbers to compete with Ferrari, McLaren or anyone for that matter.

They already provide the best engine on the grid without a doubt (2010 could be a different story but I'm going with recent form, and that of the past few years), they already have a VAST amount of data that would have been supplied to them from McLaren and other customers last year such as Brawn and Force India, also from previous seasons which will aid in their intergration into what was BrawnGP and to progress within.

I'm sure Mercades will be injecting not only revenue into the team but also technical knowledge, experience and know how in the form of staff in various roles within both the technical and managerial divisions to ensure the best return for their investment, they need to perform to come alive as a brand in F1 as they have some stiff competition, they need fans and the true way to gain them is to be on the "Button" from to word go (no pun intended there lol).

I personally think they are going to be a force to be reasoned with from 14th March 2010, also it is going to be interesting to see the performance figures from their Feburary test in 2010.

Either way it's going to be an amazing year, I can't wait for it to start, and seeing MS in that BBC interview yesterday, he really does look motivated, I've only seen him like that a few times ... I really think he is going to surprise a few people, possibly even Ross Brawn for the best I hope!

A guy who is 41, 7 time World Champion wouldn't return to a sport which he dominated for pretty much a decade without knowing he can deliver, and I really think he can, and if he does and it's Michael of old then the likes of Lewis, Vettel and Button and so on need to raise their game, because this year nobody was on it all the way through, there were mistakes and things that happened due to pressure, car issues and such that MS has suffered in the past but dealt with in a way where his performance was supreme, he dealt with it.

I could rant on about this for hours as it's my number one sport and I have a MASSIVE amount of passion for it, and not just MS returning, F1 in general, but I'll stop now and give you all a break lol.

And by the way Merry Christmas all, have a great day tomorrow ;)

Stu
:D

I think Button wanted to just pace himself against Hamilton in the same car.

theres an interview with ross brawn where he says it wasnt about the money button wanted to proove it was him and not the car that won the title and the best for him to prove himself is against hamilton in hamiltons enviroment.

brawn didnt seem bitter at all and apeared to understand exactly why button left.
So ill lie next time and say he is good just because he earns more money than me:rolleyes:
well hes still one of the top few thousand racing drivers in the world where as you are probably nowhere near the top of your chosen field.

how many racing drivers win races in formula one? its not a very long list and hes on it which is more than 95% of racing drivers can accomplish.
