Seagate 7200.10's are noisiest drives EVER!

ive had mine for around 2 weeks now, its a quiet drive apart from when its accessing and then its fairly noisey! much noisier than my wd sata ive had for over a year. Im happy but is this the norm with these drives? just wondered ;)

Hi all,

Just got one of these - arrived today. I find it to be faster than my Raptor, and definately quiet. Mine was made in China & has the pink glue.

I'm well happy so far - HDtach says this drive is faster than my Raptor.

The 7200.10 usually are faster in terms of avrage read speed, howevr they are slower seeekers, they have higher seek times than the raptors...

Ive had my drive about 4 days now and cant say its lowd, hums abit more(but not much) then the maxtor it replaced but generaly only hear it when seeking a lot.
I have an almost open grill front of my case and the hds are almost ear level. the system fans overpower much of the hd sounds.

My drive has a transparant glue but looks green and made in thailand.

its a little bit faster then the samsung 250gb which i was using as a boot drive.

Ok thanks for the info, you purchase it from OcUK? just a Yes or No will suffice! :)

I'll most likely buy 2 x 500mb drives.

Since I have 4x 320GB 7200.10 I tough I'd hook them all and see if these is a variation in the noise output

1. I tested the drive in a near SILENT room

2. The power supply I used was fanless and totally silent

3. Drive were place on foam pad to minimise vibration/resonance

4. Sound instrument : my ******* ear, from about 0.5m away. BTW I can hear that annoying "Mosquito" ring tone for Mobile phones, so my hearing is quite reasonable.

5. No drive seeks were involved as the drives were NOT connected to a computer

Drive 1
Date Code : 6522
Firmware : 3.AAC
Site Code : WU
Product of China
Result : near silent

Drive 2
Date Code : 6522
Firmware : 3.AAC
Site Code : WU
Product of China
Result : very slight high pitch whine

Drive 3
Date Code : 6527
Firmware : 3.AAC
Site Code : AMK
Product of Singapore
Result : near silent

Drive 4
Date Code : 6527
Firmware : 3.AAC
Site Code : AMK
Product of Singapore
Result : near silent

I wanted to investigate what could be causing one of the drive to be different, could it be just normal manufacturing variations or was it something else.

Upon close inspection I noticed one of the drives had a different "Drive Spindle Motor" and I bet you can guess which one it was.

Silent Motor - see pic below

NOT! Silent Motor - see pic below

[/QUOTE]Has anyone bought any 500GB versions in the last week or so & has the pink glue & as above???

Would gladly appreciate the info - the motor needs to look exactly like this:-

Just recieved a 250GB 7200.10 which is formatting as we speak in complete silence, will let you know how it sounds when I'm transferring some data to it.

So far so good. :)
Did you get it from OcUK, just a yes or no would suffice? what did the motor look like, green/pink/white glue???

Would appreciate the info. . . :)

I'm a bit worried now lol I'm planning on buying a 250GB 7200.10 and am a bit concerned about getting a noisy drive :( Like the above post, are most drives sold now the quiter variety?

I think you just need to take the plunge guys. It's such a subjective thing anyway. I'd put money on the fact that some of the people who have been in here saying their drives are silent, etc were actually the noisy drives!

I reckon if I'd given my brother the Seagate's I originally had trouble with he wouldn't have noticed anything. For one his PC is LOUD, at least it is compared to mine there's no way I could put up with the noise that thing makes. Also he has his in the living room and only goes on it after a work and maybe plays a few games so a non-silent HDD is no problem for a PC user like that.

My PC is in the bedroom and it's virtually silent. I can leave it on overnight decoding or downloading it's that quiet. The noise from the seagates would have put paid to that as they were way too loud for that kind of use, even when idle they just make an annoying buzzing, vibrating sound.

They were rapid though, so it's down to individual users aswell. Maybe the other drives are silent... even in a silent PC?
