Seagate 7200.10's are noisiest drives EVER!

Got my 7200.10 in an Icy Box just a couple of days ago...I can barely hear it when it's sitting on my desk 3 feet away. I can hear it read and write, obviously, but it's a 'nice' sound if there's a such thing. I'm spoiled compared to the 7200.8 it replaced - didn't realise just how noisy it was until I got the .10.

the ticking sound? like so you know its alive? like the old maxtors used to make? probably the new ones too?
God mine makes that noise its SO annoying

Received my 250GB 7200.10 today... completely clear glue and unfortunately its a noisy one :( I'm ringing OC tomorrow to see about a replacement. Does anyone know if they accept a noisy drive as a valid reason to return?

My seagate 320.10 is silent cannot hear it accessing at all.
my maxtor on the other hand sounds like a cat playing a wash board :p

Same.

Though in all fairness, the drive does feel like it vibrates more than either my Maxtor or Hitachi's from which I can't feel any vibration at all, but it's quiet in comparison.

(320Gb version with pink glue :) )

[edit] Actually, could anyone do me a favour and try holding the drive when you turn it on, then try it with a different make and see if they notice the same thing? Just wondered if it's just my drive, as I've never felt any drive vibrate as much! Ta [/edit]

ive got a saturday delivery coming tomorrow with 2 320gb 7200.10 drives. I'll let you know how i got on, based on the last guys comments i have a 75% chance of getting a noisy drive so we'll see

i have a seagate 320gig and the noise is fine. Not even sure what colour the ink is or whatever.

However - what jumper position should i have to be getting the max speed out of it? What's the deal with all that?

seems im in a good position to say whether the glue makes a difference or not..i have 2 delivered. 1 is green and from china the other is pink and from thailand. I expect the colour just relates to the place it was manufactured (maybe china ran out of pink glue) and has no bearing on the noise, when my computers running ill let you know

My case is an Antec Sonata and the drives are on rubber grommets. I wouldn't like to hear how loud they'd be in a normal case

I have the SLK3000B which has those rubber grommets and I have to say I found that case noisier than a cheap case for hearing the hard drives. If you mount two hard drives in the supposedly noise reducing rubber grommet bay you can hear the frequencies overlapping....throb.....throb....throb. The whole case resonates from the small amount of fans in there if you have the front plastic door at anything other than just a tiny bit open, waste of time if you ask me, unless you can afford the P150/180.

On the other hand I went from a Western Digital 800BB (noisiest drive ever, loud metallic whine) to a Seagate 7200.7 (silent) so I hope yours is just a defect because I hoped I could just get Seagates forever and they'd be quiet.

Any update mate?

I've just ordered a WD 500GB AAKS, comes on tomorrow so i'll let you all know how it compares to my 7200.10 (clear glue) when i have it up and running  I have an RMA number for my 7200.10 for a refund so if the WD is silent then i shall be shipping the 7200 back

I have just been to my local pc shop and bought the 320gb Barracuda with the pink glue - see below.

Made in Thailand with pink glue.

That looks like a printer label that been added to the antistatic bag after manufacture wonder why the computer shop would do that ?

I was told that the label for the noisy Thailand drives where on the spindle next to the glue.

I've had that too on my recently bought one... not here though. Might be Seagate doing it.
