Selfie Sticks

I saw someone using one of these at the Tower of London to take a "Poppy Selfie". The urge to insert the stick into its owner was almost overwhelming.

It's almost a shame that a solar powered flying washing machine didn't bounce off these ***** at 30m/s.

Its funny when you watch people using these in a crowd, you can see the person who is with the person taking the video thinking "Put that thing away, people are staring at us"

What's a selfie stick?

its a stick which will brutally violate someone's lower regions if they use the word or partake in the 'selfie'

I remember when you just asked a passing stranger to take a picture of you....

Me too but they cost £10 at most usually, Handing over your £500 phone to a stranger is a bit risky these days.

I think the stick was put to good use in that video and I also wish I was that stick in the video....Some tour it's been on

I have a couple of them, never used them for 'selfies' though, take them fishing mainly, saves getting my feet wet, also handy in the Summer for snooping over neighbours fences covertly hoping to capture some neighbourly boobage, secretive up-skirt pics and they also give you a great distance advantage when poking them under/over toilet cubicles which can be highly advantageous in situations needing a hasty retreat, I couldn't use one for selfies though, that'd be weird.

To be fair that is a more acceptable use of them... group photo without messing around with a timer or having one of the group left out or having to get a random person to take the pic.

Why is it such a problem that people want to take pictures of themselves (and others) either with their own limbs or with the aid of a stick?

People don't like talking to other people to get their photo, more so if they are foreign. They like to get pictures of themselves or in groups while on holiday or at an event.

Cameras are small and light enough, and mobile phones are good enough quality that you can do it now.

I had no idea what they were at first so it was bizarre having dozens of people throwing plastic sticks in my face shouting "selfie selfie".

Why not have a friend take the picture? "hey dave, get a picture of me dumping on this guy's lawn" is just as easy as holding a selfie stick while dumping on someone's lawn, if not easier.

I've had one for nearly three years now, but then I bought it to attach my GoPro while snowboarding, as it makes far more interesting viewing than a floating head camera.

Using one for taking general selfie photos though is a little sad, especially given you would have to cart it around with you. At the end of the day if you are taking a selfie which needs to be so far away from you that you require a stick to get everyone in, its not really a selfie anymore, its a group portrait and you may as well just ask somebody to take the photo.

And life goes on with smile and SOCIAL chat.

On the other hand, they do seem awfully self-indulgent and a lot can be said about the cultural narcissism that seems to be developing (think Kardassian).

I know someone who has got one and he fits this group perfectly. I don't and won't talk to them.

But I know what you're saying. I look at my age group and wonder what the hell has gone on. Maybe i'm 'old' before my time, or just not self obsessed. Who knows.
