Sennheiser HD650 - The classic beauty in a grey dress Appreciation thread!

These have actually got me listening to genres of music I don't normally bother with, working at the computer the other night listening to late night jazz and they sounded amazing. Looking at how often and long I get to use them for I don't think a tube amp is for me, would a stx be much improvement over a dg?

You can fine tune the stx sound if you want by changing the OpAmps which aren't expensive at all, that is if you find the stock OpAmps to be too harsh. I found changing them resulted in a warmer and smoother sound back in the day with the HD595.

I'm guessing changing the OP amps in an internal card is a pain tho, especially as my pc slides into my desk so have to remove all cables from behind to pull it out

yeah you would have to remove it and then remove the side panel etc then plug it all back in and test it.

not a particularly efficient way to test opamps.

I've now found some post by Chord and other people saying the Mojo can actually be used as just a DAC only..WTF I swear no one actually knows!

See if NAD will give you the give you the numbers Mrk.

How much the amp puts into 32 50 and 300ohm.

Done!

Is that good? I genuinely have no idea.

If I didn't know any better I'd say it was a tube amp looking at those numbers. They look weird to me, maybe that's normal for NAD's products though!

Regardless 300mw into 300ohm is more than enough! The Botthead Crack puts in 330mw. As long as it sounds good to your ears, you are powering them pretty soundly! :):)

I think that's their design. NAD have always had that warm "tube" like sound from what people say who have heard both in their analogue and digital amps. I've never heard a tube but have always been a fan of the nice and smooth/warm "NAD sound" as you know.

Good to know the numbers are compelling!

I know the D7050 borrows the direct digital section from their Master series so expected it to be good anyway, but I could never find exact numbers until now. Don't know why I didn't try Tweeting them earlier really :p

My taste in music completely changed after I got into high end headphones. Sometimes I just listen to music purely because it's well mastered or has some interesting sound characteristics. Thankfully I usually end up liking the music itself too.

This is a fairly good read on the subject

From which I believe the 650s require 1/10th of that capability to drive them effectively.

What I've found with the 600s series is that most amps have more than enough power in terms of current and wattage what really makes a difference is the voltage gain (obviously voltage, current and wattage are all part of the same equation) and ability to swing it as required effectively.

I've asked my work colleague if I can borrow his 650's again. I'm curious to see how they sound on a Schiit Modi 2 Uber and Vali compared to the AKG K7xx's.

Interesting link thanks! Certainly explains a few things I didn't understand before.

That is something I've noticed once I started exploring higher end headphones and amps - I started to appreciate well crafted music even if it wasn't of a genre I'd normally listen to (and start to hate some music that is actually just a poorly articulated mess when listening via something decent rather than in-ears off a portable device which are more forgiving).

Same, though not just for headphones, my speakers are really excellent for that too and shine when playing well mastered music or music where details have been thought out in terms of listening enjoyment whether it's an EDM track, rap, folk or something acoustic.

Bottle Head Crack ordered!

By the way guys, I'm going away from forums for a bit. I've got a lot of stuff to sort out in my personal life and I also need to get away from the internet! I've quit all the other forums I'm apart of but keeping this one as it's an awesome site! Prob be back sometime in the summer!

Speak soon! and keep rocking those 650's :)
