SETI@home News Vol. 111 (23/07/2010)

If there's enough interest in them i will get some made up, not sure if we would need to ask ocuk permission but yeah i will price em up then work out how much interest there is and if its worthwhile.....your thoughts gentlemen? :)

If you're using the logo, yes it would make sense to ask them. Since I have no case badges, my case is in need of decoration - and the tinsel doesn't come out at this time of year. So yes, I'm up for some.

Sorry for the newbish question, but when are the servers down for during the week?

Ian...

Official outage is tue-fri (Berkeley time). In practice, that means from about 1500 on Tuesday UK time, 'till about 1500 Friday UK time. The remainder of Friday is an absolute **** storm of uploading, so it is hard to get work then. The work situation eases throughout the weekend, as the limits on the numbers of tasks currently on each rig are raised. Monday, 1500 UK time, **** storm II begins, as everyone tries to grab as much work as possible since the limits are completely removed. :D

I suggest you set your cache size to the maximum number of days (10); that way you will only be limited by Berkeley hardware/connectivity issues (I haven't managed anything like a 10 day cache since the new outage regime came in). Also, its probably worth leaving your client connected, so it can continue to grab work and upload when it wants to.

You will probably find the work estimates shown by your client are way off - certainly its not worth putting much faith in them if you are running anything other than the stock client. You've caught the project in a state of flux; pretty well everyone is feeling their way with the new regime (which is changing itself quite frequently), trying to find the best way to work with it. Bear with it - I'm sure the dust will settle over the coming weeks.

Hmm I wonder if I should buy one now or wait till I am sure decisions, decisions ;)

Thats the cheapest that they have been for a while - I was looking at the zotac one until I bought a 480 from toxic. I have a value 470 from ocuk and its been good as gold, crunching away for the last couple of months with no problems and you get to run 2 or 3 wu's per card :D
I wouldn't bother getting a 480 as the extra price premium isn't worth it for the very slight increase in output you will get and there is far more overclocking headroom on the 470 than there is on the 480...
Id go for it if you can afford it as you don't want area51 pulling away much more do you :p:p.....

Done it Zotac is now bought, now I have to try and go to sleep dammit :D

Upgrades are coming early :D :D :D

Yay - should give your RAC a nice bump :D
Post back if you have any trouble and Im sure we can get you on the fermi credit superhighway, you will be stomping area51 in no time unless he 'does a grimgoth' and upgrades his rig as well...

Hopefully I will have enough time to set it up over the weekend and get some work this time round :)

I haven't a clue about how these need to be setup so will be fun haven't had a new GPU for a while now :)

Just using the stock fermi app at the mo, there isn't an optimised fermi app out yet, though one is being worked on.
As long as the new vlar changes hold up, you won't need to use rescheduler and the other 2 things to change...
create a cc_config file

<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

That will get boinc using both your gpu's

change your app_info section

<count>1</count>

and change the 1 to 0.5 or 0.33 to run 2 or 3 wu's on a single card - jury is out over which is better, 2 or 3 wu's a card - the other good thing is that fermi will crunch vlar wu's - take me about 70 mins to crunch, a lot quicker than the cpu..

Not sure how it works with a rig that has a 470 and a non fermi card, but I have 2 fermi's so that was it for me.

Re-install the drivers after adding the 2nd card as that had me head scratching for a while...

Cant think of anything else for now..

'does a grimgoth'

rofl.....
i know i was going to jump the 4** generation, but I was thinking... (oh dear)
how does a 460 compare to a 250?
also, the card length is much shorter right? it looks like them 250s, which means.... it will probably fit in those cases already sporting those cards...
yes no?

Not that Im sore about it or anything, but I was so looking forward to getting revenge and my place back :p
I thought Id played a great flush, only to get busted by a late royal flush on the last hand..

A 460 will slaughter a 250, especially when you bring multiple wu's on the same card into the equation, but Im not sure about length, haven't really paid attention to sizes as mine have gone into a full tower
