SETI@home News Vol. 113 (22/08/2010)

:D It would be fine if it was working....all in good time i suppose :)

Well i've voided the warranty now, so going to have a damned good sleep then set about resetting the heatsinks and see what happens, this is what i meant by innadequate thermal paste applications on this thing. Notice the abundance of high quality thermal paste on the southbridge

The 'stuff' (and that's about all you can call it) on the Northbridge isn't a whole lot better! In all seriousness, as long as you clean off what is there (!), I think you'll be find with some decent paste. Hey. lets face it, it won't be any less effective!

You have probably seen this Toxic, but just in case you haven't

Apparently you are not voiding the warranty if you apply more or new paste, but you do if you lap it...

Lap it...would never even consider that scary stuff.
Well i did not have any of the "officially approved materials" so to get the worst off i heated the edge of a credit card in warm water that got the little that was on there off, but guess i should wait and go get some proper stuff to clean the residue.
Am over the "Mr Angry" mode i was in earlier, i think i will get a lot more satisfaction out of fixing it myself and seeing this up and running.
Okays thats it boinc et mort, thats me done n dusted till monday.
I know there was a lot of thought and information flowing the other day in regards to overclocked 460's compared to 470 480 etc etc.
Was the general gist that an overclocked 460 is comparable to a 470 at stock?

Mr Berserker sah do you mind me asking, would you not consider gpu's at all or do the cpu cores - 31!!! give you better results on other projects?

I would consider GPUs, yes, but only if I do a new build, which is gradually getting less likely (but you never know).

PS - only 9 of the cores are mine (3/4 of Q6600, E6600, SU2300, Core Duo). The rest (E6600 x2, E8400, E5410 x2, X5450 x2) are on loan (one of the E6600s is the teamocuk.co.uk server, for example, and the latter three are the temporary wingmen that will go away in a week).

A heavily oc'd 460 is just under a 470...

Still a nice boost if only for a week, hopefully give you enough to break into the top 30...

Glad to be of service :D

I could have kept quiet and got a sneaky head start - perhaps catch TBag......depending one which stats you look at he is now ahead of me.

But I'm a team player - come y'all git downloadin :D

Two machines up'n'runnin with the opt apps.

Will have to do the third t'morrow (later).

Everything's looking sweet - just installed straight over the top of the old (fermi apps).

Then copied the app_info and created seperate ones for doing 1, 2 & 3 wu's - just a matter of dragging in which ever I want to use (depending on what else I maybe running at the same time).

Happy Days :D

Known Issues:
- Not Comaptible with Marius' Rescheduler 1.9. It is recommended to either stop rescheduling (due to server changes) or use Fred's variant which allows prevention of '-177' errors. Those errors are a feature of server side changes to the way task elapsed tiimes are estimated, rather than internal to the science application. Fred's variant has some support to prevent these errors if they become a problem for you.

Just waiting on the first 6 wu's to finish now to see what the improvement is........

It's looking like somewhere in the region of about 5% improvement.......

Good for the big hitters :D

Work Units that took about 32 to 33 mins on my 460's are now sub 31 mins.
