SETI@home News Vol. 113 (22/08/2010)

I have mw@home, einstein@home and lhc@home as well.

I will turn tasks back on for seti, run down the other projects and then suspend them and once seti has crunched the remaining new work , go for the re-install, probably in a week or so once the caches are empty..

I want to re install the O/S's on all my machines but with Berkerley downtime the window is tight to get
your quota back up before they turn the taps off again, too late for this week of course.

With my work pattern rotating as well its a bit of a pain really.

Toxic - have you tried the new apps from lunatics yet?

No need for editing the app info anymore - just download and install - it really is that simple...
You have an i7 so will need to choose SSE 4.1, and if you want to use rescheduler, you will need
http://www.efmer.eu/download/boinc/scheduler/boinc_rescheduler_2_0.zip

It is a newer rescheduler that works with fermi out of the box, but to be honest, fermi cards can crunch vlar's now, and server side changes at berkeley mean that there are not as many getting sent to gpu's now anyway..

edit

You will need to edit your app_info to run multiple wu's on each card

Just replace
<count>1</count>

with

<count>0.33</count>
or <count>0.5</count> if you want to run 2 per card..

Hmm, what to do...

I have 200 quid to play around with after selling a load of stuff on the bay this weekend ( I blame loudbob and Toxic!)

Do I sell the 480 and get 2 x 460, or do I just keep my present set up (470 + 480) and get another 470 seeing as they are going for silly prices at the moment...
Selling the 480 will be a loss financially, and with 4 slots, Im wary of replacing it with 2 inferior cards, yes I get a higher CUDA core count, but then I have only 1 slot left

4 slots

current setup (1 x 470 + 1 x 480)
448 + 480 = 928 cuda cores

option 1
buy another 470
448 + 480 + 448 = 1376 cuda cores for £230 outlay

Option 2
sell 480 for £290 (hopefully)
448 + 336+ 336 = 1120 cuda cores for no outlay
but downtime/lost credit while 480 is sent off and new cards purchased

Option 2 is reasonably cost neutral, bit of downtime but Im more concerned about only having 1 slot left for future upgrades and 2 slots occupied by 'mid-range' cards in what is meant to be a power cruncher..

One thing that is making me think another 470 is I can in the future, take both of them out and run them in SLI when I upgrade my rig early next year. The only problem with that is that I will have to go down the intel route, when I would have preferred an AMD 6 core solution. Im presuming that you can't run SLI on AMD boards? I've never tried a SLI setup, I still game using an 8800GT, but I only have a 19" monitor, but that will all be changing next year :D:D

Thats me out of seti work now - I have run down my cache and I was going to detach/re-attach to get rid of the ghosts, but for some reason the detach option is greyed out for seti? I have no tasks, so not sure why - any ideas?

Tried restarting BOINC Manager?

If not, then:

  • Open command prompt (don't forget to run as Administrator).
  • Run: cd "C:\Program Files\BOINC" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC"
  • Run: boinccmd --project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu detach
  • Run: exit

Your SETI project should be no more.

Oh, and because everyone else has, why not hit the server even harder:

cpartcert1.php

OK, it's two weeks old. Completely forgot! Also need to console myself as I'm now down to 25 cores, and 23 tomorrow (with 10 of those on 'no new work')

Thanks for that - I have downloaded more work now - impatient, but I didn't want to risk not getting any tomorrow for the outage. I have enough to keep me going to late Fri pm, when I will then try your method and finally get rid of the ghosts..

Well done on the tiffy - a tiffy is a tiffy, doen't matter if it is old or not...

Afternoon Mr Edge sah :)
Yes boinc is now working fine with the new opt apps, the r3 works ok but....tis fine with 3 gou but putting a fourth in it restarts after 10mins do am thinking i definately need to use both molex that are on the board so will sort that out this week sometime. I did a clean install of w7 on both and forgot i wanted to put 1 rig up with xp, i know you can back up data folder then restore after new os but you cant restore the data folder or wu's back to xp can you?
Am not sure what i would suggest if you have a bit of spare cash. True the 470's are a good price but we are not sure what q4 will bring from nvidia maybe a full 512 core card or even a dual gpu.
If you can wait i would suggest using a £100 to treat the missus to something new and a meal out, then 2-3 weeks down the line she might be more receptive if you wanted to upgrade and probably wont bat an eyelid if you wanted to spend 3-400 just a guess but you know what women are like :D
480 as we have all noticed are depreciating faster than heck but i gritted my teeth and took a further loss selling 2 at 30 below what you wanted for yours, course it depends what you want to get as an upgrade.
I've a new case coming this week so am going to try and squeeze the finances see what i can populate it with :)
Apart from the initial dissapointment with the r3 things are going ok but damn i wished i had remembered to put xp on that rig :D
I have an idea that we might be able to discuss when your free ;)

Nice tiffy Mr Berserker sah....i dread to think what kindoff strain the server will be under next week after the outage lol :D

lol - she will never be receptive to me dropping 400 on a new gpu, though I do have some brownie points left from spoiling her rotten on her b'day.
Im tempted to keep the 480, only because Im not willing to lose too much cash on it and it is still the fastest single card for crunching - it's just the 470's have so much more o'cing headroom, they make the 480's seem very overpriced for what you get..
Is your mail back up?

Hmmm that is interesting....fiddling being my middle name...i shall have a cuppa cha and get right on it, if it does not work will just put w7 back on...Thanks Mr Berserker sah!:D

Is it worth the hassle of a re-install, I don't think XP gives you more than a 5% increase?
Other people here will be able to qualify that better than me...

Well at least i know it can be done might wait till after the outage to see if rigs have peeked i dont think i will get much more out of them, then the acid test of xp and if i get an increase then bonus. I noticed a lot of the big hitters over the pond using w7 and like a sheep i followed :)

I think W7 is a more capable operating system overall, and shock horror, in my experience Microsoft have finally got it right. I think some of the US guys did do comparative tests, and XP came out marginally better. With XP, you can run BOINC as a service, which you can't do under W7, but then again, W7 seems to be that stable (again, in my experience) that BOINC doesn't need picking up off the floor anyway!

I think its swings and roundabouts really!

True enough its been a longtime coming though - Windows Me still gives me the shakes :D
So i have a new install of boinc and downloaded tasks, as you say will not run script untill you say so do you still need the client_state xml Area51?

If it has tasks assigned to optimised apps - yes please. There shouldn't be a problem, I just need to check the naming convention for the <plan_class> entries.
