SETI@home News Vol. 113 (22/08/2010)

It's not going to be that good Mr Edge am 2 x 480 down remember, wouldn't worry about that scoundrel Loudbob i'll have serious words in his lugs after i slap him for you :D

I have noticed mind since i started using the new optimised apps that on the whole things ran quicker so i did an "Edge" and started running 3 tasks per gpu on average they're coming in at 3 every 19mins and 45 seconds precisely:)

Lucky you - my times are all over the place...

The 3rd card arrived today, installed it, and I have had to drop the clocks back quite a bit as temps were getting a bit high on 2 of the cards.
Still concerned at some of my cuda wu completion times
57 mins WTF :eek::(:confused:

Relax Edge, i know thats easier said than done sometimes but your here for the long term remember i have had afair few that seem to take longer than normal, i just put it down to luck of the draw....and spit at the screen occassionally :D

Area51 if your around and about can you resend those basic instructions again....i was moving by backed up stuff onto another pc, lost my temper with a defenceless hard drive and now its laying on its back in the neighbours garden, dont panic all superdupertoxicencrypted :)

Relax :(:mad::confused:

I haven't spent £700 quid on gpu's to see them crawling along at 57 mins :D:D

There is a problem somewhere as those units should be taking sub 20 mins. I have a thread on seti looking at this - currently wading through the client_state.xml

To quote Loudbob "patience young padawan the student will become master, just not yet is all" he's been a bit quiet last few days have you noticed mmmm he bothers me when he goes quiet

My GTX260 does 2 WU's in 48mins on the longest count so yours are weird

lol :p
Nice one Marine - you know how to soothe a concerned cruncher!

You are right though, those units shouldn't be taking that long, I suspect that it might be running other projects at the same time. Im gonna play around and see what happens..

Morning All
Am getting ready to get rid of last of few 480's in favour of 470 but the new opt apps seem to have improved the run time of wu's which are coming in at 3 per gpu in under 20 mins whereas whenever i ran 3 it seemed to take 27minutes and more.
So should i hold onto the 480's given that i will lose money if i sell or stick with them and see how far they can improve? Rock-----Hard place?

lol :p

As a suggestion (you may already be doing this) -

Stop everything apart from seti (gpu) - then check to see how long the wu's take to complete. Check using 1, 2 & 3 wu's per gpu.

Then if you're happy - enable cpu work. However many cores your cpu has (inc multi threaded i.e. i7 - 8) use one less - on mine I only use 7 of the 8.

On a side note - if you have wu's taking +50mins when they should be taking 24mins then it could be your clocks are dropping to 2D mode - try running everything at stock for a few hours.

ATi release 5990 QuadFire card in response to GTX485!!!!!!!!

Seriously though it's looking more and more likely we will see the 485 before christmas.....mmmm finally 512 cuda cores strapped onto 2 x 460??

Stillllllllllllllllllllllllllllll waiting on the RMA :(

All systems fully operational and functioning as normal - although I may run out of work before the end of the outage.

New build is good - I've had no issues with the Rampage (unlike your good self). It will remain as is for the time being - until cash flow has recovered (around Christmas) - but things are looking good for an RAC of +100k :D

Nice one sah, is TBag Towers still to be graced with your presence at the weekend, have just checked the royal red carpet is a dirty washed out colour but will still roll it out for royalty lol :D:D:D

I have now stopped everything but seti.
I have a quad core, with 3 cores crunching and 1 feeding the gpu's.
I have backed the clocks off down to stock, though I can confirm that they were not dropping back to 2D.
I think this will be a case of playing around and trying things for the next few days, but something is definately up, as the percentage of units taking nearly an hour is far too high..
One thing I have noticed is that my gpu usage graphs are all over the place, rather than a steady line indicating 80-95% usage, they are up and down like a yo yo..

Try stopping on the CPU and going back to one thread per GPU for a little while. Then work back from there.

Are you using Win7? and do you have sli disabled?

On WinXP (32 & 64bit) when crunching 3 wu's (per GPU) I have a steady GPU usage of 99% on all my GTX460's & GTX470's only dropping to 95% when it finishes one wu and starts the next.

However, when in Win7 GPU usage did become less stable.

Other than that I am finding it rather difficult to find a reason for the erratic GPU usage.

Ah yes....

I have secured transport for either Friday or Saturday (can't do Sunday - working - Nuclear Submarines don't build themselves y'know).

So, which ever is convenient?
