SETI@home News Vol. 113 (22/08/2010)

If your gaming - go for the 1024mb version (better memory bandwidth).

I got the Gigabyte oc'd versions - then oc'd them again.

Mine are now running with the shader clock @ 850, temps @ 70c and fans @ 60.

Quiet as a mouse.

I well reccomend the Gigabytes if you can sump for the extra cost.

I have heard good things about them as well - it depends what you want.
For seti/crunching, they are severly cut down cards, hence the lower price, though they are a redesign, so less power and less heat and they clock well

But my 470 clocks well, and has 448 CUDA Cores vs 336 CUDA for the 460, and that is what matters for folding or crunching...

Having said that, if I wanted to game and just do the odd bit of crunching every now and again, then Id probably get one. With the optimised apps still to be released, we haven't seen the best out of fermi yet...

I blew one up on weebeastie :p They are a bit cheaper than the Silverstone but now I've got one the Silverstone is very impressive.

T'is the Silverstone which will eventually power my Asus RE3 - along with 4 x GTX470's

:D

Which is something similar to wee beastie if I'm correct

It's no Wee Beastie - but Mid Rig is now completed (until I decide to put a third 460 in).

What d'ya think?

It would be for crunching mainly but would like to play games more often hmmmm must think some more thanks Loudbob :)

Crunching would be the main aim and i can see what you mean about the cut down cores, i want to increase output but i don't want to go spending £225 a pop on gtx 470 again if i can help it.
Looking back 480's were a mistake in view of what they can clock to and what they can output, so although a 460 is cut down to 336 cores and can be heavily overclocked even in comparison to a 470 i'm thinking 460's and clock them to within an inch of there lives. Optimistic i know but would the 460 output say 70% of a 470 do you think? Cheers Edge :)

**Edit** Very good Loudbob i like that neat and smart looking, but it needs a liberal sprinkling of dust to give it the hard working look :D

If money is tight, do you really need to be spending anything? Your RAC is pretty good at the moment - no-one is even close, so you could just leave it as it is, enjoy the credit and think again after xmas - by then nvidia might have the fabled GTX485 out ;) And you will probably be top!

I haven't seen any figures for the 460's so I wouldn't like to guess, but if you oc it, you should get somewhere near that mark..

Most definatly yes.

Mine are crunching away merrily:

2 x 460's - 6 wu's every 30 - 31mins (3 each) - 35k rac approx (oc'd to 850/1700)

2 x 470's - 6 wu's every 27 - 28mins (3 each) - 40k rac approx (stock)

2 x 250's - 2 wu's every 18mins (1 each) - 20k rac approx (stock & opt app's)

Based on comparable work units (wu's) and WinXP OS

I must admit - am impressed with the Fractal Case considering the price and the BeQuiet 1000w PSU allows for some easy cable management (plus the 4 fan supplies on the PSU help).

Toxic: What are your rigs setup like at the moment hw wise?

Do you have any GTX480's still? If so I'd sell one and get a couple of GTX460's for the price, if crunching is your main task for the cards. Not too sure about the Seti performance but you would get more than double a GTX480's performance with two GTX460's I'd say.

Looks meaty! :)

Whats the spec?

Fractal Design Black Pearl Case
MSI P7N Platinum Motherboard
Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz (and Corsair H50 Cooler with push/pull fans)
4Gb Kingston Ram @ 800Mhz (system gets unstable at any higher)
2 x Gigabyte GTX460's OC @ 850/1700 (room for another)
2 X 500Gb Sata's (Raid 0)
2 x 1Tb Sata's (Raid 0)
1 x 250Gb IDE
1 x DVD-rw IDE
5 x 140mm Fractal Design Silent Fans
1000w BeQuiet PSU

Windows 7 (64bit) & Windows XP (32bit)

I think that about covers it :D

Dont get me looking at more cases i actually dream about them now, but you have helped me make my mind up thank you sah!

If you have the slots free Toxic, that would be a good idea..
480 cores vs 772 - nice bump in RAC :D

Damn - got me thinking now...

Argghhhhhhhh...me too lol. Theres a nice biostar x58 board going for 50 squid in mm (not me) there again it would mean cpu, memory....oh fiddlesticks :)

And case...don't forget the case...you know you want a new case....

Really Really do want a new case :D

I need to return (via rma - all requested):

2 hard drives (doa)

Keyboard & Mouse Wireless Desktop (doesn't do what it was advertised at and didn't come with batteries)

Silverstone Strider 850w PSU

Gonna cost me in postage fee's :(

:eek: On that last note Loudbob i believe i will retire for an hour or two it has actually give me a headache
Where does it all end i ask myself, well i believe we will have all earned a small break once we pass 1,000,000 rac
Thats plain wrong having to pay for return postage but hey ho :(
I'm in need of some mindless blood and gore with no merit to it at all, might make a start on "hellraiser" all 8 movies :)
