SETI@home News Vol. 115 (12/09/2010)

Morning peeps :)
Going to go for a long walk then its round 2 with the unruly gpu, winxp gave me the same problem so am going to reinstall w7 and start from scratch with 197 drivers to see if thats the problem.
If i dont mangae to put it right today it's going to get kicked from one end of the road to the other :)

Well done on the tiffy HeX :D

Toxic, take a deep breath and go get another working psu from one of your rigs and try a quick swapout - it will prove one way or another whether it is your psu or mobo and save you so much time...

Im going to amuse myself tonight by trying to get more than one einstein wu working on my gpu at a time - should be fun!
Seriously though - 6-9% gpu usage is such a waste

After reading around on the Einstein boards, someone experimented with the <count> value in the Einstein@home section of the client_state.xml file, changing it from 1 (default) to 0.22 to get four WUs running simultaneously. It worked.

I tried this on my GTS250 but got something along the lines of an 'insufficient CUDA' error message. 0.33 didn't work either, but 0.5 did so I'm limited to two tasks running on my card. They run fine - no computation or validation errors - and get virtually twice the output as there's roughly only a four minute increase in the time taken to complete a task. The only possible downside is that there was mention of the <count> value being reset to 1 every time that rig communicated with Einstein's servers, but I've not found that to be the case.

Im sure I tried that, what gpu usage are you seeing when you do that?
Im waiting for the 'official app' as with 3 x gpu, and only a quad, my cpu's are a major bottleneck

Cheers Marine will try my best today :)

I did swap out the psu last night/this morning same problem so i am fairly sure its not the psu. Either way i am calm and will plod along with it for the rest of today but if i dont have it working by tonight as sure as east is east its getting kicked from one end of the road t'other.
Thats handy to know for einstein TT, just as soon a sthis rig is working i am milkywaying it and probably einstein after a bit of sleep :)

Nice tiffy Mr Hex sah very well done!!! :D

Only ~45% at most. Try as I may I can't get a third einstein process to run on it, which I suppose could be a hardware limit with the card. That's a shame, as in theory I could easily run four processes on this card (and still have ~10% of the GPU not being used).

oops missed that - nice tiffy Mr Marine sah well done :)

Problem solved.....partly my own fault and partly you know who. Told em on the phone i wanted a socket 775 board and would be crunching seti with 2 x gtx470.....so after all the fuss of the last 24 hours i just happenned across board specs and guess what....ati crossfire only.
So yup i am 50% numpty for not checking myself :o:o:o

Well its done now will send it back monday and start looking for what i wanted to begin with, interesting diversion mind i won't let it happen again! :D

I suspect that it is more memory related, as Einstein uses a lot of memory - still 3 isn't bad..

Hmm not sure about this. As far as I know, you should be able to run two PCI cards in the slots, providing you don't link them (ie, crossfire). The 470's conform to the PCI specification so the fact that the board is 'ati crossfire only' should only refer to how the PCI slots would operate when linked via a crossfire type connection (in other words, you couldn't do an sli connection........)

As above you can quite happily run 2 x 470's in a Crossfire board, you just won't be able to run them in SLi mode.

I've done that in the past.

Used to run a GTX260 + 9500GT in a X38 Crossfire board no problem.

Thanks for the input guys much appreciated, yeah it's going back either way, when something makes your blood boil it's got to go, luckily i found a 1 slot board in my junk cupboard and it works so that will do for now :)

Cor just got 4 Astropulse WU's, what are these things? they are saying they are going to take 130hrs a pop
