SETI@home News Vol. 115 (12/09/2010)

Hey Mr Halz - yup am all set to sign back up to milkyway today just nursing a rig back to health then i shall be onto you for a little help with that cockeyed sig of mine.:D
Sorry k3v all the gpu's are gone :(
There replacements are imminent :)

Well I must be doing something right, I've also had the Gpu users group recruitment PM. They must be getting desperate ;)

I don't seem to be downloading much new work at the moment but I did manage to flush some 1800+ finished WUs up this morning. Roll on back to normality.

You will have to fight for any work for about 3 more days ;) This is the result of lots of people running dry, uploading their results, panicking and trying to get as much work as humanly possible in case things go pants again..... :(

....oooh, and they queues have run dry :(.Guess we'll have to wait for the server side peeps to get into work before we get anymore ourselves.

Was having problems a few days ago with my setup, ran through every possability and ended up rma the gpu, received replacement today and still the same problems.
Thermaltake 875w psu
Asus p5q deluxe mobo (updated the bios)
6gb ram
asus gtx 470
Put the replacement in, re installed windows and all updates.
The gpu shows in device manager and is adjustable with afterburner. The problem comes when i start boinc, after a few seconds the progress bar moves say .025% then freezes, the whole think locks up and the only way out is to restart.
Have unplugged any peripherals i do not need and even additional fans, still the same boots into windows fine but as soon as it starts a wu in boinc it freezes.
Checked and double checked the cabling and psu all is cabled correctly, the psu can power 2 pcie gpu and came with 2 x 8pin to 6 pin and 2 x 8pin to 6+2 pin cables below is a pic. The 4 black coloured connections are for peripherals the red for the pcie
Done everything i can think of and i am completely stumped i just don't know any ideas appreciated :(

Am not even sure the problem is the psu but everything else checks out ok and the 3 green indicator lights on the psu are all a go :(

Hi Toxic have you seen this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-145-AN&groupid=701&catid=1428&subcat=
sure it was in stock the other day.:(
My modular PSU has hard wired pcie connectors for the GPU. Does yours?

Short of trying the card in another PC are you sure its not the slot in the mobo?
Have you o/ced the NB & if so did you change the jumper setting?
Is it only the SETI wu in BOINC or will it crunch another project ok.
Have you the correct version of BOINC 32 or 64bit - silly question I know.

Does eventviewer tell you anything? [like it would ne that helpful:rolleyes:]

That's all I can think of at present. Good luck.

How old is the PSU? Could one of the rails not be working? [clutching at straws]

As it freezes when the gpu is under load I would be looking at the psu as you have already discounted the gpu being at fault.
Other than that I dunno :(
I would download a another copy of boinc as well incase you had a bad download.
Faulty pcie slot?

Hi Pilgrim, am definately getting one of those when they come back into stock!
It is a new modular psu the only hard wired canles are the 24 pin mobo and 2x 12v pin on the same cable which i have used to connect to 8pin 12v on mobo.
Have tried uninstalling afterburner and trying evga p no joy.
Def have the 64 bit version of boinc. There are 3 pci slots 1 top and 2 (too close together to get 2 cards in) towards bottom of mobo, cannot use the 3rd as it hinders the usb and the like so will try the second pci.....grrrrrr.

Afternoon Mr Halz sah....so much for getting back to milkyway eh?? What a pillava gonna keep at it mind ....i think its time for a cuppa cha and a few prayers.....one neurotic cruncher coming right up :D

Yes they were present before and after the bios update, am just reading through endless forum entries to see if i can find anything vaguely similar.

"My kingdom for a can of vimto" Tbag speak for still nothing good here, tried every combo of boinc opt apps, problem is definately the pci slot...i think

Not celebrating your woes Toxic, but cheers:

PSU woes seem to be contagious lately!

Toxic, why not hack something together (PSU-wise) from one of your existing rigs - be a pain I know, but at least it would rule out/in the PSU.........

Oh lord no, soon as i start fiddling with the others it'll all go to pot.
I raise my umpteenth cup of cha to your stella by crackey i might take a break an all.
Come back refreshed then bosh its xp 64 bit just out of asick sense of curiosity! :D:D
