SETI@home News Vol. 116 (19/09/2010)

I went for the msi hawk in the end... i am like a magpie and got drawn to the shiney bits...

Awesome card, should do 850 core no fuss with a bit of extra voltage.

My Cyclone is running that and it tears through units :)

If you're daring enough - you may be able to push it close to 1000 core.....

Them shiney bits sure are nice.

If I hadn't already opted for the Gigabyte's these would be the weapon of choice.

:D

I'm beginning to get a bit worried, I have completed work units with the 2nd October as the deadline. If the servers fail to come back in time have I processed these for nothing?

Morning Mr Loudbob sah how goes it with you? :)

I'm good - which is more than I can say for my RMA.

Looks like a full refund may be in order (been advised by OcUK to go down the complaints root now - Not OcUK's fault, EVGA don't seem to want to reply).

Still - will be able to add an additional 460 to my collection and put the rest towards a new PSU.

How come seti is down all the damn time?

i have not been able to get any new work for days and days now.

I know Jeff says there is 4gb of free space "we wouldn't use" but i am getting really nervous having all these tasks hanging around waiting to report.

Jeff's right. Even in the worst case, it would take 100 million results to fill the disk again. Even if every single outstanding result - including all the ghosts - was returned, there would be at least 3.6TB empty space still to be filled.

The bigger worry is that the upload server dies and takes all the uploaded results with it. That's about as likely as your own machine dying and taking your results with it, so may as well upload them. :)

It's only a problem if you started trying to upload results more than 13 days ago. At 14 days, BOINC considers the upload dead and nukes the result.

The upload storage array ran out of disk space. Since they cannot add any more disks, they have shuffled the servers - but we still appear to have problems. Information about the current situation is not very forthcoming.....

thanks for the comments earlier guys. what's happened to your rig toxic?

edit : beaten to it

The server shuffle was on their todo list (during an outage), but they got forced into doing it during an inage!!!!! The distinction between inages and outages is becoming somewhat blurred - we seem to have more outages during inages than during outages (I think)

<edit>I like to add value:D:D:D:D</edit>

I shed a few tears, not for the hardware but the results i may have lost.
After calming myself down - damn those kleenex come in handy, i started the process of elimination.
Have savaged number 3 to test the psu thats fine so it's 99% the board - Mr Biffa was certainly right on that asrockx58. Am rooting around for some cables and hopefully the hd is ok but it's really sickened me to the stomach, sod the hardware its rma and inconvenience at worst but i pray (non denominational) that the hd is ok.
I just smelt smoke and off went the power, for a split second i must admit i thought of stomping it TBag style but common sense prevailed. Blimey just thought the cpu oh crumbs, i sure do hope e.t. appreciates the effort were putting in.

**Edit** A fresh brew and a fully recharged electric screwdriver and i should be good to go - i took a picture of the carnage (it aint pretty) will post it in a bit:eek:

Modern HDDs can often survive a sudden removal of power - showing my age but I remember the days when if you didn't park the heads on your drives before shutting down, you physically trashed the whole drive  Fingers crossed for you!

:eek::eek::eek::eek::mad::mad:

Oh Toxic, that is harsh - hope the cpu/hdd survived OK - fingers crossed 4 you...

Some drives that didn't park the heads would at least land the heads in a sane way - i.e. you were OK provided you didn't even think about moving the drive. I had one of those until six weeks ago.

Hope the results can be salvaged, but in the big scheme they're not important - your sanity and money is. Seriously, if you've lost the results, it isn't worth giving even a second thought to. Chin up and move on. :)
