SETI@home News Vol. 116 (19/09/2010)

Oooooh, tiffy :D :

Tell you the truth TT am a bit bored tonight so am just trying to push this i7 to the limit, which for me is 3.4 stable clock and as many instances of whatever project i can lay my hands on.
Managing to get 12 cuda tasks and 4 cpu tasks running on einstein it's funny as hell trying to figure out how far you can push something, am fortunate in that i usually pull up before the precipice rushes up to greet me...lallalallalalaaaaa :D

Managed to lower the 1 cpu per gpu task to .33 and theyre chugging along....not as fast but definately working, normal operations will resume tommorrow for now am quite enjoying myself :D

**Edit**

Anyone have any idea on the following: i know i can choose not to use cpu in seti options and that it will apply to all boinc projects, unless i specify a different location with the appropriate prefferences.
My question is how on earth can i set prefs to do gpu +astropulse only??? ta muchly

If you set the machine up initially to do all 3 (CPU, GPU and AP), surely all you have to do is ensure your CPU cache is run down, and then remove the appropriate sections for CPU work from app_info.xml for S@H........ (bit of a guess but I would have thought that would work)

Do backup your BOINC folder first though.......;)

:o I have now was just sat back in amazement downloading one after the other quite funny really. Must admit i am impressed with Einstein running multiple gpu tasks and the gpu rarely goes over 55 degrees nice, i could get used to that although Mr Edge reckons the cpu could be the bottleneck when doing that.....worth a try :)

****Way to go Mr Marine sah****

Chuffed for ya lad :D:D:D

The Einstein gpu app is a bit like the seti ATI one - it only hands 'some' of the work off to the gpu, and the rest is done on the CPU, once you start to run more tasks than you have cpu cores, then the program timeslices or shares the cpu's and your completion times go through the roof...

edit

You can turn off cpu crunching at the website - set up a preference for gpu, AP, and assign it to say 'work' or 'school' - then just add your machine into that location...

edit 2

Nice tiffy Area 51

Hopefully after today no more hardware shuffling about, going to grit my teeth and let 2 rigs do nothing but seti 3rd doing einstein and milyway, plus side i found a 4pci-e slot asrock mobo for half the price of the rampage 3....doh!

Well, just got back from a week away.
I crossed me fingers and left everything running, but it didn't run for long and I've come back to find Mr Area51 has pinched me cell:mad:
As it skidded to halt it did manage to limp across the line for a new tiffy tho' :)

Warning: I am baaack! :p
of course, am back too late to pick up any wu's so expect not much from me for a while still.
Also, for some strange reason, my main machine's wd raptor refuses to spin up at all. so there's some repairs to be done :(
not to mention installation of some w/c parts that I got at the mm just before I left.
So... edge, you are still in with a chance :)
edit: I just looked at my siggy.... looks like I just bumped Biffa by a hair's breadth hehe, sorry sir :p

Thanks for the news T :D

Some interesting stomps coming up for me :D but blimey the electric bill is fierce :(

A lot of the project is down for the weekly 3-day outage, so although the website is up the majority of services, including uploads and downloads, are offline and will be until sometime tomorrow.

Edit: Damn, too slow!

SETI servers are uploading !!, have I got the wrong date or something?

Edit:On second thoughts could be wrong, had Boinc manager set on show active tasks only and there wasnt any

But server status does show uploads and downloads as active
