SETI@Home & OcUk Projects News Vol. 173 31st March - 6th April 2012

Output v build v manflu v temps am sure there's a mathematical formula for it but everythings takeing twice as long :(

I think once you get all your GPU's up and running I'll struggle to keep up.

Afterall, I'm stuck with 4 x GTX680's (only two running atm), 2 x GTX 460's & 2 x GT430's.......

:D :D :D

But........ I may have an ace up my sleeve after checking 'this weeks offers' :D

I think the 680's will come into there own if theres the ongoing interest and people at seti still interested in the codeing n whatnot.

:eek:Ahem ..... this weeks special offer of which you speak, i was going to say are you getting one but knowing you your about to click the button on 2 x ocuk gtx 570 nice cards consume less elctricity and clock like a good un ;)

Been in that boat too... last year I left a good "temp" job i'd had for 7 years to take a "permanent" position with an employer since I had a little one on the way and wanted the security, but after 5 months they decided they didn't need me any more. Have since found another "temp" job but it's not ideal. All I want to do is have a long term job where they appreciate the fact I'll always turn up on time and do my level best... but some "managers" seem to ride everyone even when they're obviously a conscientious and hard working employee. [/rant]

OK, I reinstalled the oldest version I had which was 6.12, but it still seems to have the problem of not downloading enough units. The reason seems to be that when it first gets a unit, it judges that it will take (say) 10 hours to complete in the estimate, but then it gets done in a few minutes, so what it thought was ten days work is just a few hours. Don't know why it's so badly misjudging the compute time?

Close.... but not the OcUK GTX570 ;)

For virtually the same performance and coming in at £32 cheaper per card I have opted for the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560Ti "448 Edition" WindForce 3x OC.

Hopefully, it should have more oc'ing headroom too :D

BTW: You were right on the quantity - I should have two by Monday (Tuesday at the latest).

Also, due to having a visitor yesterday and today - I have not yet started on the 680's :(

Oh bravo sah nice purchase! ..... i will try shaking the money box but i doubt theres enough copper in there to splash out, but am halfway through this build at least :)

Hopefully i'll get time later to strip big rig and start the. Epic build :D

Will bring my tally up to four 680's, two 560 ti's (448 core) and two 460's. Will retire the 430's as they don't play well with others :D

Not sure what ppd it should it, but it'll take top spot me thinks ;)

Hehe, this the only place I've seen people say "sah" and I've always wondered what it means. My two initial guesses were:

a) just a way of saying "sir" but with an accent.
b) somehow related to SAH - Seti At Home ? :)

On another subject: does anyone know what sort of "Average Work Done" figure I should expect for SETI running on BOINC 24/7 on the machine in my sig? So far it's up to 1800 ish but have only been running 24/7 for about 3 days and at the start was having trouble getting enough units... but it seems to be working now. Just want to be sure I'm being efficient, and not getting less than I should be. :)

Afternoon Mr stickman sah ( just a stuck up way of saying sir :))
What version of Boinc are you running, just that i tried the new one last night woke up and it still hadn't got any gpu work whereas the other machine runs 6.10.58 and has a full load.
If your not running 6.10.58 give it a go as well as optimised apps 0.4.
As long as your getting some work its a start, it takes a few weeks for your average to even out. Say you started on day 1 with a gtx 470 it might take 2-3 weeks before your average would climb to around 18 - 20 000 just an example depends of course on what hardware your running and it can be upped with the help of sensibly overclocking your cpu or gpu.
Let us know how your getting on :)

Hi Mr TBag Sah. :) Pardon any typo's, I'm partaking of some fine bourbon.

I was running version 7. On previous advice I tried to go back to 6.10 but the oldest version i had saved was 6.12. If anyone could link me to a copy of 6.10 for Win7 64bit that'd be sweet. :)

I also have once installed the 0.4 lunatics seti whatsit, but I have no idea how to check if it's still working (or was ever working) as I have since reinstalled the older boinc as mentioned, and didn't know if that would overwrite it?

If it helps, my CPU units say Application: Local: setiathome_enhanced_6.03, and the ones running on my 7970 say "setiathome_enhanced_6.10 (ati13ati)."

Thanks for the help and advice.

Am having trouble finding a link to it if you configure your trust you can send me your email addy it should be ok to just send it as a rar file 7mb and will go from there :)

Ok its send Mr stickman sah,
once you have 6.10.58 sat in front of you install it followed by the lunatics app 0.4.
Have sent you a cc_config file which you can alter to alow upto 8 downloads at a time on the go just drop it into the boinc data folder and replace the existing cc_config

once its all installed and running a ok go into your boinc data folder/projects/seti@home find the app_info file ..... be sure to shut down boinc first and open the file with notepad only. Go through the app_info file and where the instances of cuda are set to 1 task per gpu change it to .5 for each cuda entry this will enable you to run 2 tasks on your gpu at a time.

If you get stuck shout and if all else fails crack open another bottle :)

Thanks guys. I'm running a 7970 (probably not ideal for seti i know) - will the changes to the cuda settings have any effect on ATI cards?

And here's my latest tiffy... not much yet I know. :)

Nice tiffy stickman way to go and congrats to Mr Kolala sah too

7970 is still a good card apparently they are improving it all the time same with 680s its all good dont matter how much you crunch as long as your taking part ..... unless of course your after Mr Reavers cell ..... time to start cleaning up matey :confused::D
