Shall I get an AE86?

I had my MK1 MR2 with the 4A-GE engine on the rollers at RR3 and it made 120 ish. :) not bad for a 16 year old engine.

Sounded more like 560Bhp tbh, has that guy started a court case yet for hearing loss?

The mondeo at least has the advantage of practicality. What is the car going to be used for? I'm assuming daily driver which is also fun to take for a bit of a blast? A 200SX sounds like it would do that well assuming you don't need the back seats to be too roomy or the practicality of a hatch.

Daily driver. Don't really need rear seats. The max i have is a few rc cars and planes but whenever i do them im usually alone or others go with their own cars. I have realised i dont need all the space that i thought i would. The longest journeys i do is like 1 hour and that would not be regular at all.

I mostly have a car for fun, driving experience goes infront of comfort for me really. Also interiors are not a major problem with me, if it wasnt soft top/t-bar i would want a/c really.

Lopéz,
Yup you make a very good point there, if only they were cheaper!

L0rdMike,
I have heard just about anything there is to know over MSN about the 4A-GE and Mk1 MR2. :p Thank SKILL for that one. ;)

Nickg,
I realised Fox would say something completely different to whats been said already, hense why i asked him. Get a good variatey of opinions.

Zip,
If i had the money i would get an Elise without a 2nd thought, only fully comp though. ;)

Not trying to start a crazy debate on FWD and RWD....but why do you feel you need a RWD car........is it purely so you can drift or slide the rear about?

For £4k? Errr the E30 is what you buy if you are hard up and need RWD for under a grand.

:eek:They are so cheap over there:eek:
How much do E30 M3s go for?

1) I feel safer driving one. All the wheels are controlled and the reactions feel more natural with a rwd to a fwd.

2) Id rather have oversteer then understeer, at least that way you can still drive the car and not totally out of control.

3) Yes they are more fun then fwd cars with drifting etc.

4) Why do all the work through 1 pair of wheels when you can spread it through all the wheels?

But please, i really do not want to change this thread into a fwd vs rwd arguement. If anyone wants to talk more about it, please make a new thread.

Zip,
I wouldnt want an E30 M3, arnt all of them LHD?

Thanks for that utterly useless reply. He didn't ask that, he asked me personally what I would spend £4k on.

I answered that question.

As he asked me what *I* would spent £4k on, I can explain to you exactly what a Mondeo or a 5 Series has over a 200SX or an MX5.

I know what your reply is going to be - please, don't bother. He asked me wahat *I* would chose. I know the MX5 handles amazingly, I know the 200SX is far more tuneable than a 528i, but for me, neither would be anywhere near the list for the reasons I describe :)

well, hmmm i kinda took the question as in, "if u were in my shoes with my criteria etc what would you buy"...you did answer but i am merely questioning the rationale behind it? as i cant really see many + points for a mondeo over a 200sx... apart from practicality (if your lookign at a trueno, then your likely as not too bothered about practicality, poor mondeo dashboards etc...

quite a few people starting on Volvo 340's for the cult drifting thing now... nuts.

If you really want an AE86 for the image then you only have the one choice, if you want it as a practical car, or as a drift or track car then there are better value for money alternatives about!

That wasn't what he asked though, he wanted to know I personally would buy. He's even explained that above.

And I explained it :) I love Jap cars but could never own most of them becuase they feel so cheap and nasty - I just went and got some stuff out of the FTO and the clang when you close the boot is just cringeworthy :(

I know the reasoning behind it - the Japenese felt that spending all their research and development time and money on building total reliability, excellent performance, etc etc was time better spent that making the perfect dashboard or door closure noise - and for most people, this is true.

However, I like all round ability rather than exceptional ability in one or two areas :)

If the interior was the same as the 5 Series, I'd buy an Impreza Turbo :p

Nickg,
Seriously Fox is correct here. I asked what car HE would buy, i didn't confine him to one style of car either. Thus his suggestions being perfectly valid.

Pigeon,
Volvo 340 is a laugh but its not 100% drifting i want, i do want a car that can still turn. ;)

Its not RWD but how about an Impreza turbo like fox said:)

The AE86 is an AWESOME car. Drifts and handles superbly when well setup. The 4age is a brilliant engine but quite expensive to tune. Unfortunately they are very expensive for what they are. If they were only about 2.5k for a good one I'd defo get one.

However, imho you'd be best to get a mk1 mx5 import and turbo it for the same sort of money. An excellent handling car with an a turbo for the extra straight line grunt.

2) Id rather have oversteer then understeer,

This is fine, if you know what you're doing. If you **** it up however, you'll be what hits the wall first instead of the safest part of the car.

Understeer heavily into a corner and you will simply plough straight on, smashing the front of the car up like it's supposed to.

Oversteer heavily into a corner and you'll neatly slam the car sideways, at it's weakest point into whatever's in the way, probably pancaking yourself around a lamppost.

Just my 0.2c, it's fun, but.....meh. If you're ready for it, it's fine. If you're pootling about and it catches you off guard.....g'ah.

Thought I'd say it anyway .. I feel in a grumpy off-put mood tonight :(

So just ignore me :p

One of the guys at work had one too!

He said that it was a real handful and he almost lost it a few times just pulling out of service stations etc!

He had a bright red 1.7 - knicknamed it "The Red Dragon"

Ok so the list of what everyone has suggested is...

Mk1 MR2
Mk1 MX5
S13 200SX
S12 180SX (Silvia)
Isuzu Piazza
E30 3 Series
E39 5 523i/528i
