Shall I get an AE86?

I'd imagine that that's a bit of a joke suggestion - they really are awful cars! :)

It may look like a pig and steer like a bus, but it will outlast planet earth itself.

1.7 RWD for about £50 - £500 could be a good laugh!

Just wondering saitrix how do you know you prefer RWD cars when you have only driven a focus :) ? ( Sorry in advance if you have driven some beefy RWD Beast ;) )

Good point

He had a ZX which had done about 280,000 miles before finally giving up the ghost and his parents had this car just sitting there. It must have spent years without being used and he just bought a new battery and it fired up first time. Remarkable condition too considering the age!

325i. This is the one to have! One of the best drivers cars for the money ever in my eyes, stupid fast, tuneable, great lively rear end, nice noise, look good......You'll get a great one for the money, and a huge chunk of change to insure/modify/get some lessons on high-po driving.

Do a big 6 on it, 335i. Decimate everyone.

2.0 Sierra :)

Fair enough mate, I dont have any problem with my puma and understeer unless i push it to silly silly silly levels. I point it and it turns in :) And if i lift off mid corner i get some nice lift off oversteer too. I have driven a VX220 on an airfield and found that to be an amazing experiance. I felt "connected" with the car a lot more than i feel i am with the puma. But to be fair , no driving aids / power steering / and sitting about 1 inch off the ground probabley added to that effect somewhat.

Oversteer isn't entirely the domain of RWD as sam says, I think the 309 used to go side ways more than the chevette although they are exteremes of each domain. It is nice being able to floor it out of junctions and not scrabbling for grip though, or if it's wet fish-tailing off up the road:D.

On the 340 front, they're the in thing in our university motor club at the moment for road rallying. I think 4-5 people are running them at the moment and while they go side ways easily they handle like a barge, I just don't really see the point for anything other than drifting.

RWD = Right Wheel Drive :D

Have you thought about a kit car? A 7 has ZERO practicality but you won't get a better drive for the money :D

Yes i have but i need more then zero practicality. :) Really the MR2 is as far as im willing to go in lack of practicality.

I used to have one and dont remember the leaf springs as used on horse and carts since medieval times are generally helpfully to drifting or anything else. Barrel slapping uncontrollable oversteer was more like it. Get the 2 litre saloon if you can, the 1.7 was a bit slow really not rev happy at all. It was very good in bad conditions though and it had heated seats!

As a serious car then maybe but as a fun drift machine they're awesome. Easy to get sideways and even easier to control when it was.

there are better suggestions than the 340 for a more all round car as listed! however if you are looking for cheap silliness where you probably end up with a few scrapes then the 340 is an option. I'd be especially upset if I paid over the odds for a 15 year old Toyota to look cool, then hae an accident while learning to drift and find it cannot be put right?

Could the Volvo 340 be the next mk2 Escort or AE86.. if someone can solve the handleing mystery?

Nope, it doesn't have the fundamentals it needs to start with - for one thing it's just too bloody heavy.

I was after something a bit more better overall really.

What sort of mpg does the rotary get? Its quite low isnt it when powering it?
